BMT and Strategic Marine Partner on Crew Vessel Sustainability

MBARI to Transfer Research Vessel to Florida Institute of Oceanography

ABPmer Maps Shipping Cargo Value

Marine Management Organisation (MMO) has published results of a project undertaken by the UK-based marine consultancy  ABPmer, to develop a method to assign values to shipping cargo.The resulting mapping and information will improve the evidence base used in developing marine plan policies.Monty Smedley, maritime sector lead at ABPmer said “This was an exciting and novel project for us. The celebrities were out in force at the recent Southampton Boat Show. Led by Duran Duran’s Simon Le Bon, ably supported by sailing legend Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, TV wildlife presenter and trained diver Miranda Krestovnikoff, BAFTA award-winning wildlife expert Steve Backshall, explorer, writer and TV presenter Monty Halls and Diane Youdale, otherwise known as Jet from Gladiators. Norwegian Cruise Line, Port of Seattle Ink 15-year Lease

The Port of Seattle signed a 15-year lease with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) parent company of Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises. The deal secures NCLH ships in Seattle for the full term of the lease and provides passenger volume guarantees estimated to bring $73 million dollars of revenue to the port. “We thank Norwegian Cruise Line for their commitment to Seattle and the Alaska cruise business,” said Commissioner John Creighton. “Cruise in Seattle means $440 million in annual economic impact for this region.

DMW Marine Group hired Monty Reeder as its Inside Sales Manager and New England, Canada and mid-Atlantic direct Sales Representative. Reeder graduated from Ursinus College with a degree in Business and Economics and previously represented Iron Mountain. Mark Gregory will now be responsible for direct sales in the Southeastern US and Gulf Coast while Bo Weidner will continue to handle the West Coast of the US and Canada. Marcon International, Inc. of Coupeville, Washington has announced the sale of the unfinished, newbuilding hover barge "Monty" by builder Sundial Marine Construction & Repair of Troutdale, Oregon. to private buyers. Independent Monitoring of Deep-sea Hydrocarbon Industry

Writing in the scientific journal Nature, scientists have called for increased discussion of independent monitoring of deep-sea hydrocarbon industry activity with the aim of obtaining a better understanding of its ecological impact. The hydrocarbon industry is increasingly searching for hydrocarbon resources at much greater depths and developing drilling technology to exploit them. However, drilling the seafloor at great depths is technically very challenging and carries with it poorly known risks.

USTRANSCOM Hosts Battle of Midway Observance

By Bob Fehringer (contractor), U.S. United States Transportation Command hosted a Battle of Midway observance June 6 to commemorate the World War II confrontation which changed the war’s direction in favor of the United States and the Allies. A musical prelude by the Navy Band, Naval Service Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill., opened the event and was followed by video remarks from Adm. Michael G. Mullen, chief of naval operations. Gen. Norton A. Schwartz, USTRANSCOM commander, and Rear Adm. Mark D. Harnitchek, USTRANSCOM director of strategy, policy, programs, and logistics, also spoke. Vice Adm. Ann E. Rondeau, USTRANSCOM deputy commander and the top Naval officer in the command, was the keynote speaker.

United Defense Shipyard Wins Ship Repair Contract

United Defense Industries, Inc. announced today the U.S. Navy's award to Southwest Marine (SWM) of the advanced planning segment of the contract for dry docking and pier side work on the USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN (CG-57), a Ticonderoga-class Aegis cruiser home-ported in San Diego. Southwest Marine is a member of United States Marine Repair, Inc. (USMR), which was acquired by United Defense last month. The advanced planning segment of the contract is valued at $518,484. With funded options, the total contract value is in excess of $12 million. SWM is the prime contractor and has teamed with National Steel and Shipbuilding Company and Continental Maritime of San Diego to perform the work.

Hanson Retires from San Francisco DryDock

Carl Hanson, president and general manager of San Francisco Drydock (SFD), one of seven United States Marine Repair (USMR)ship repair facilities , including Southwest Marine (SWM) and NORSHIPCO on the East Coast, has retired. He had been with the company since 1978. Due to his extensive shipyard knowledge and experience, he will remain involved with the company on a case-by-case consulting basis. Hanson's shipyard career began in San Diego, Calif., at Triple A South ship repair facility, where he gained hands-on knowledge as a ship superintendent. When SWM opened a facility in San Francisco in 1978, Hanson left Triple A and moved north to help with the start-up.

United States Marine Repair Promotes Dickinson

B. Edward Ewing, CEO of Norfolk-based United States Marine Repair (USMR), the largest non-nuclear ship repair, modernization and conversion company in the U.S., announced that Monty Dickinson will head USMR's West and Gulf Coast Shipyards. Dickinson joined USMR last January as president and general manager of the company's San Diego-based shipyard, Southwest Marine. In addition to managing that yard, Dickinson will spearhead leadership and operations of SWM's San Pedro, Calif. and Ingleside, Texas shipyards and San Francisco Drydock in the Bay area.
