Van Oord Orders WTIV for 20MW Offshore Wind Turbines

Dutch marine and offshore services company Van Oord has ordered a new offshore wind turbine installation vessel that will be able to install next-generation wind turbines of up to 20MW. Jan De Nul Sells Offshore Wind Installation Vessel

Offshore installation firm Jan De Nul has recently sold its jack-up installation unit Taillevent, to make room for higher-spec vessels that will soon join its fleet.The sale includes the Taillewent vessel only, with the crew deployed to other Jan De Nul vessels. Vattenfall Awards Van Oord a 4-Year Offshore Wind Contract

Offshore wind developer Vattenfall has awarded the Dutch-based offshore installation contractor Van Oord a 4-year operations & maintenance (O&M) contract.Working through its MPI Offshore organization, Van Oord will provide jack-up and associated lifting services for main component exchanges across Vattenfall’s portfolio of offshore wind farms. Vattenfall, based in Sweden, has 10 offshore wind farms in Sweden, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK. During the contract period, Vattenfall's offshore portfolio will be extended to 622 turbines with a combined capacity of 2.6 GW.

Naval Fuel-related Assets Protected by Coatings and New Robust Standards

The U.S. Navy has many assets other than its seaborn vessels to care for, and recently it adopted new standards to protect those that are fuel-related. Livestock Carrier Capsized in Storm off Japan, Rescued Crewman says

A ship carrying 43 crew and nearly 6,000 cattle from New Zealand to China capsized after losing an engine in stormy weather in the East China Sea, the only crew member rescued so far told Japan's coastguard on Thursday.The Gulf Livestock 1 sent a distress call from the west of Amami Oshima island in southwestern Japan on Wednesday as Typhoon Maysak lashed the area with strong winds and heavy seas.Japan's coastguard said it had rescued one crew member, Sareno Edvarodo, a 45-year-old chief officer from the Philippines, on Wednesday night (Tokyo time) while searching for the ship.According to Edvarodo, the ship lost an engine before it was hit by a wave and capsized, a coastguard spokeswoman said.When the ship capsized, crew were instructed to put on lifejackets.

CrossWind Hires Van Oord for 759 MW Offshore Wind Farm Construction

Dutch offshore services giant Van Oord has won a construction contract for the Hollandse Kust (noord) offshore wind farm from CrossWind.The contract follows the announcement on Wednesday that CrossWind, a Shell-Eneco JV, had won a tender to develop the 759 MW subsidy-free offshore wind farm off the coast of the Netherlands.Van Oord’s activities will encompass the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation of the foundations, inter-array cables and transportation and installation of the wind turbines.

Ziton Charters New O&M Vessel

Danish company Ziton has added Vroon jack-up MPI Enterprise to its fleet under a bareboat charter agreement.The vessel has been chartered on a bareboat agreement with Vroon as of 28 May 2019 until 31 March 2021. Ziton will then have the option to acquire the vessel.This fleet expansion is part of Ziton’s strategy to meet changing market dynamics, in which offshore wind turbines with capacities of 7‐10 MW are increasingly commonplace.Enterprise will be available to our customers under existing framework agreements. Jan De Nul Names Newest Offshore Installation Vessel Taillevent

Luxembourg-based dredging and offshore contractor Jan De Nul Group named its newest offshore installation vessel Taillevent in the Belgian port of Ostend.Miss Pauline Stassijns, granddaughter of Director Dirk De Nul, baptised the vessel and wished her success and a safe journey. The De Nul family, employees and their guests attended the christening.Jan De Nul Group acquired this offshore installation vessel, at that time MPI Discovery, from the Dutch company Vroon Group on 18 July 2018.The 2011 built Taillevent is designed specifically for the transport and installation of offshore wind turbines and their foundations. It is also perfectly suited to other offshore sectors, such as the oil and gas industry.

Refit for Jack-up at Damen Verolme Rotterdam

Damen Verolme Rotterdam (DVR)  completed a refit project on the MPI Enterprise, a 120-metre, self-elevating, DP2, wind turbine installation vessel owned and operated by MPI Offshore, part of the Vroon Group. The works included the installation of spudcans on her four-legged jacking system, which can elevate the vessel at rate of one metre per minute in water depths up to 45 metres. Acquired by Damen Shipyards Group in June 2017, DVR is one of the largest refit and repair yards in Western Europe, capable of accommodating any seagoing vessel or floating offshore unit. Damen Shiprepair & Conversion has worked with MPI Offshore in the past.

MPI Enterprise Fitted with Spudcans

MPI Offshore’s wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV) MPI Enterprise has recently been upgraded with spudcans. The spudcans, which were installed during a drydocking in Rotterdam, increase the load-bearing area when the vessel is jacked up. This, in turn, minimizes penetration of the vessel’s legs into the seabed when working offshore. MPI Enterprise is the newest addition to the company’s WTIV fleet. Built in 2011, and acquired in January 2015, the vessel has brought an additional spread of services and flexibility to the existing array of vessels.

MPI Pact with Eneco for Prinses Amaliawindpark

MPI Contractors B.V. has signed a contract with Eneco Windmolens Offshore B.V. to provide offshore transport and lifting services during main component replacements planned for wind turbines in the Prinses Amaliawindpark. This Agreement, which will take effect on 1 January 2018, is for a period of five years, with options to extend for a further three and two years. During this period, MPI will mobilise one of its wind turbine installation vessels (WTIVs) for two planned campaigns per year. Operations will involve the exchange of main components, such as gearbox, generator, transformer, blade and/or blade bearing. MPI competed in a European tender procedure that commenced in April this year. Award of this contract was based on the MPI submission scoring best on price and quality.

Dirty Ship Ordered to Leave New Zealand

Indonesian bulk carrier  DL Marigold has been ordered to leave port of Tauranga  in New Zealand waters after its hull was judged to be threat to bio-security. The Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) has sent the ship packing from Tauranga because of its dirty hull - the first time this has happened. MPI ordered the Panama-registered DL Marigold from New Zealand after MPI divers discovered dense fouling of barnacles and tube worms on the ship's hull and other underwater surfaces. It  gave the ship 24 hours to depart. "The longer the vessel stayed in New Zealand, the greater chance there was for unwanted marine species to spawn or break away from the ship. So we had to act quickly," local media reported Steve Gilbert, border clearance director at the MPI as saying.
