CACI International Inc says it has been selected as a prime contractor to provide logistics support to the U.S. Navy’s Military Sealift Command (MSC) on the Worldwide Logistics Services (WLS) contract. The five-year (one base plus four option years) multiple-award indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract has a ceiling value of $37 million and represents continuing work in CACI’s Logistics and Material Readiness market area. Military Sealift Command is the leading provider of ocean transportation for the Navy and the rest of the Department of Defense (DoD), operating approximately 110 ships daily around the globe. The Command ensures DoD readiness by transporting military materials, such as fuel and equipment, and conducting specialized missions worldwide.

Military Sealift Command fleet replenishment oiler USNS Henry J. Kaiser (T-AO 187), which is currently providing logistical support for U.S. Pacific Fleet's biennial Rim of the Pacific exercise off Hawaii, will deliver 900,000 gallons of a 50-50 blend of advanced biofuels and traditional petroleum-based fuel July 17 to the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) strike group. The fuel delivery is part of the Navy's Great Green Fleet demonstration, which allows the Navy to test, evaluate and demonstrate the cross-platform utility and functionality of advanced biofuels in an operational setting. This will achieve one of the five energy goals established by Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus: to demonstrate a Great Green Fleet in local operations by 2012.

Military Sealift Command dry cargo/ammunition ship USNS Amelia Earhart paused its maiden MSC mission to pay respect to the ship's namesake at the site where the famed aviator disappeared July 2, 1937. As the sun began to set over Howland Island in the Central Pacific Ocean, the ship's crew took a quiet moment to hold a wreath laying ceremony in the area where Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan are believed to have perished during an attempt to circumnavigate the globe. Fleet replenishment oilers USNS Laramie and USNS Yukon, and rescue and salvage ship USNS Grasp are the winners of Military Sealift Command’s 2008 Capt. David M. Cook Food Service Excellence Awards. MSC Commander Rear Adm. Robert D. Reilly Jr. announced the winners in a message Tuesday, Jan. 22. Laramie won the award in the large ship East Coast category while Yukon took the honor for large ship West Coast. Grasp won the award in the small ship overall category. Winners will receive their awards April 5 at the prestigious International Food Service Executives Association Joint Military Food Service Awards banquet in Denver, Colo. Ten ships vied for the coveted award and competition was intense, according to Roberta Jio, chief of MSC's food service policy and procedures.

The Navy's Military Sealift Command will commemorate the Merchant Marine heroes of yesterday and today at a 2:30 p.m. Maritime Day ceremony May 22 at Pier One East on the historic Washington Navy Yard. Rear Adm. David L. Brewer III, USN, commander, MSC, will host the event, and MSC fleet ocean tug USNS Mohawk will be pierside, serving as the backdrop for the ceremony. Mohawk is one of about 110 ships operating daily around the world supporting MSC's mission as the ocean transportation provider for the Department of Defense. All MSC ships are crewed by merchant mariners, and MSC is the world's largest employer of the U.S. mariners with more than 3,000 civil service mariners serving on MSC ships and nearly 2,000 mariners crewing ships under contract to MSC.
