USCG Hosts Workshop on Maritime Security

The two-day workshop on maritime security, hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard in Washington, was completed with members of diverse sectors of the maritime industry offering a variety of suggestions for improvements and areas of concern related to maritime security. A listing of the recommendations is scheduled to be released by the Coast Guard on February 4, with the final report scheduled for February 28. Written comments may be submitted to the docket through March 15. Meanwhile, maritime security will be the major focus of the National Harbor Safety Committee meeting in Galveston on March 4. National Harbor Safety Committee Conference

The U.S. Coast Guard and the Houston/Galveston Navigation Safety Advisory Committee are hosting the Fourth Annual National Harbor Safety Committee Conference in Galveston on March 3-5, 2002. Items on the agenda include a review of harbor safety in the Port of New York/New Jersey following the terrorist attacks; contemporary port security issues; port risk and vulnerability; and harbor infrastructure issues. USCG to Co-Sponsor Conference

The U.S. The conference focuses on the importance of the Marine Transportation System (MTS) and how the MTS structure can assist policy- and decision-makers operate efficiently, effectively, and consistently throughout the nation. Key topics will include: Harbor Safety Committee contributions to the Marine Transportation System, strategies for coordination and stakeholder participation at the port level, MTS outreach, port security, and the latest tools and technology available to the ports. The conference will be held at the Argent Hotel in San Francisco, on March 19-20, 2001. An evening reception will be held on March 18. NTSB Praises Coast Guard and MAIB

National Transportation Safety Board Acting Chairman Mark V. Rosenker today in a speech before the 8th Annual National Harbor Safety Committee Conference applauded the actions taken by the U.S. transportation safety on waterways. "Government, industry, professional groups, and other organizations, are an essential part of a strong and successful marine transportation industry," Rosenker said. During his speech, he applauded the steps the Coast Guard is taking to address the passenger weight issue, noting that in yesterday's Federal Register the Coast Guard announced a commitment to a high priority rulemaking to address this matter, and in the meantime to implement an interim program so that passenger weight stability issues can be addressed right away.
