A stricken Iranian oil tanker continued exploding on Friday, hampering rescue efforts, Chinese state media reported, as Japan's Coast Guard said the ship drifted away from the Chinese coast and into Japan's exclusive economic zone (EEZ). The ship, which has been ablaze for almost a week since it collided with another vessel on Saturday night in the East China Sea, was about 286 km (178 miles) northwest of Sokkozaki on the island of Amami Oshima as of 0700 GMT on Friday, the Japan Coast Guard said in a statement.

Rescue boats resumed their search in choppy waters of the East China Sea on Thursday for any survivors from the stricken Iranian oil tanker that collided with a freight ship and burst into flames at the weekend, the Chinese government said. The ship remains at risk of exploding and sinking due to spilled oil as the fire raged for a fifth day, the Ministry of Transportation said in a statement on Thursday. Rescue crews were forced to retreat on Wednesday after a blast on the tanker. "Spilled oil covering the ship body and its surrounding water is still burning, which leaves Sanchi at risk of exploding and sinking," said the MOT in the statement. The ministry has sent 12 rescue ships to search for the 31 remaining tanker crew members and to extinguish the fire.

An Iranian warship crashed into concrete wave breakers at a port in the Caspian Sea and two of its crew members are missing, according to local media reports. The 100-meter long warship, called Damavand, crashed at the harbour town of Bandar Anzali during stormy seas which kicked up waves as high as four meters, Gilnegah, a website focused on news about the northern province of Gilan, reported. Six crew members from the warship were initially knocked into the water during the accident and four were recovered from the sea. Pictures posted on Gilnegah show the damaged warship listing to one side near wave breakers that protect the port. No official statement has been issued on the number of dead or injured from the accident.

The National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC) has signed over 200 leasing contracts for its vessels since the lifting of the Western-imposed economic sanctions two years ago, Financial Tribune reported on Thursday. The report quoted Iran Tanker Company's Chief Executive Officer Sirous Kianersi saying that from the easing of the sanctions (in January 2016) until the end of last month, foreign companies signed 215 time-charter and single-voyage deals for NITC tankers. NITC signed agreements with France's Total, Royal Dutch Shell, Spain's Cepsa, Vitol, Hanwha Total of South Korea, India's Essar, Turkish refiner Tupras, China's CNPC, among others.

South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co., Ltd. (DSME) and the Industrial Development and Renovation Organization of Iran (IDRO) have signed an outline agreement to cooperate on developing the shipbuilding Industry in Iran. Under the deal with the Industrial Development and Renovation Organisation of Iran, Daewoo Shipbuilding will work on constructing a shipyard and related facilities in Iran, according to Yonhap News Agency. The parties plan to establish a joint venture company (JVC) to develop an Iranian shipyard with cooperation from DSME Okpo Shipyard on the engineering and construction of the types of vessels needed by Iran.

A U.S. proposal to sanction Iran’s state-owned oil company and its main tanker fleet may ensnare any person or business in the world involved in purchasing or shipping Iranian oil, according to a report from Bloomberg. Pressure is mounting on Iran’s nuclear program, as the prospect of an attack from Israel grows beyond rhetoric. In turn, the pressure is rising to force Iran to back down. The Senate Banking Committee unanimously adopted a measure Feb. 2 to compel the administration to investigate links between Iran’s crude-oil supply chain and its powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, an elite military unit that the U.S. has sanctioned for weapons proliferation, terrorism support and human-rights abuses. The move would essentially “black list” Iranian oil.

A dramatic increase in orders was experienced by Wärtsilä NSD Corp. for marine diesel engines in China during the first part of this year totaling more than $36.5 million. Just this past March, the company received orders for a total of 115,000 kW of four-stroke engines and 33,200 kW of two-stroke engines. Specific projects filled by the company included main and auxiliary engines for the second RoPax vessel for Rederi AB Gotland, Sweden, at Guangzhou International Shipyard. This vessel will be equipped with four Wärtsilä 12V46C main engines, each of 12,600 kW at 500 rev/min, and three Wärtsilä 9L20C auxiliaries, of 1,530 kW each at 900 rev/min. The company is also supplying the auxiliary engines on five VLCCs contracted at Dalian New Shipyard for National Iranian Tanker CO.

Ten 305,000 dwt oil tankers recently contracted in China and South Korea by National Iranian Tanker Co (NITC) will each be propelled by a seven-cylinder Sulzer RTA84T-B low-speed diesel engine.

National Iranian Tanker Co. (NITC) managing director said the country would produce over 80 million tons of LNG each year, and that 40 LNG carriers would be required, according to a report on www.tehrantimes.com. According to the report, the first cargo of Iran’s LNG would be shipped in 2011 and a 150 thousand cubic meter LNG carrier is needed to transport one million tons of liquefied natural gas.

According to reports, the Norwegian ship brokers confirmed that the National Iranian Tanker Co. has chartered two more very large crude carriers to store unprocessed crude oil. The National Iranian Tanker Co (NITC) -- Iran's state tanker company -- has invested about $2 billion on 17 new oil tankers, and could order at least 30 more liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers by the end of the year, a senior official said, according to a Reuters report. NITC aims to become a global player in energy transportation and will register the ships outside Iran under financing agreements, to keep operating in the event of sanctions from its nuclear spat with the West. He said that NITC was currently awaiting the delivery of 13 VLCCs of 315,000-318,000- tons each, expected between the end of 2007 and early 2009. This will see their supertanker fleet size grow to 28.
