Japanese Partner Up on Anti-Roll Tank Research for Large Containerships

ClassNK Updates Guidelines for Direct Load Analysis & Strength Assessment

Classification society ClassNK has released its Guidelines for Direct Load Analysis and Strength Assessment (Edition 2.0), which clarifies the requirements for more rational structural design reflecting the latest structural strength assessment methods based on R&D outcomes.ClassNK’s Rules and Guidance for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships and IACS CSR stipulate that hull strength assessment based on finite element analysis should be conducted, and the evaluation applying simplified formulae of the loads depending on ship type estimated from existing ships is required.

MOL Study on Automatic Prevention of Collisions

Japenese marine transportation company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) announced that MOL, MOL Techno-Trade, the National Maritime Research Institute (NMRI), and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT) jointly conducted an assessment and feasibility study on advanced navigation support systems, using the NMRI-owned ship handling risk simulator, which has a horizontal view angle of 240°C.On watch-keeping during ship operations, mariners must first be able to see an object, and then judge whether that object poses a risk to the vessel. ClassNK's Guidelines for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems

Leading classification society ClassNK announced that it has released Guidelines for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems. These guidelines cover class safety requirements as well as safety requirements stipulated in the IMO guidelines. The MARPOL Convention Annex VI has placed phased limits on the maximum allowable amount of sulphur in fuel oils used by vessels globally, as well as stricter requirements in geographically defined emission control areas. Under the regulation, more stringent limits will be enforced over time. In the face of these more stringent limits, the industry has begun to look towards alternative solutions to the expensive low sulphur content fuel oils currently required by the regulations.

ClassNK Update Design Support Tool for EEDI Verification

Classification society ClassNK has released the latest version of its PrimeShip-GREEN/MinPower software. The software was originally developed by ClassNK and released in April 2014 to help shipyards comply with amendments to MARPOL Annex VI, specifically EEDI requirements, by calculating minimum propulsion power requirements in compliance with the IMO 2013 INTERIM GUIDELINES FOR DETERMINING MINIMUM PROPULSION POWER TO MAINTAIN THE MANOEUVRABILITY OF SHIPS IN ADVERSE CONDITIONS.

ClassNK and NMRI Convene Workshop on Damage Stability

Leading Classification Society ClassNK and Japan’s National Maritime Research Institute (NMRI) brought some of the world’s leading specialists on structural safety to Tokyo for an international workshop on risk-based assessment of ship safety held jointly by the two organizations in Tokyo on 11 October, 2011. The event, which included presentations from top experts from the IMO and Europe’s leading maritime universities as well as leading researchers from NMRI and ClassNK, drew over 100 attendees from throughout Japan’s maritime industry. In addition to Q&A sessions held after each speaker’s presentation, all of the presenters took part in a lively panel discussion on damage stability at the end of the event.

ClassNK and NMRI Cooperation Agreement

Gas to Solid Transport Tech Coming

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co. reported that it is about to develop a practical technology to convert natural gas into a solid for low-cost maritime transportation. The planned natural gas hydrate (NGH) technology is expected to become practical in fiscal 2008, Mitsui Engineering said in a joint report with such concerns as Osaka University and the National Maritime Research Institute to an international study forum in Tokyo. Mitsui Engineering is also developing a special transport ship in time for the practical application of the NGH technology. NGH is an ice-like solid formed from a mixture of water and natural gas and is easy to handle due to low combustibility.
