Tymor Marine Gets Grant Funding to Refine Draft Survey Tech

A maritime technology company based in Aberdeen has been awarded funding from Scottish Enterprise to support the development of an app-based version of its breakthrough draft survey technology. Rolls-Royce Extends Naval Services in the Gulf

Rolls-Royce has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with United Arab Emirates (UAE) based Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB) to provide naval shipbuilding, repair and refit activities across the Gulf region. The MoU is for a definitive agreement for the provision of services, with the objective of becoming a preferred service partner to each other. The agreement will include fixed service rates for onsite service attendance and turnkey repair projects in the Rolls-Royce Dubai workshop.

USS Sterett Arrives in China

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Sterett (DDG 104) arrived in Zhanjiang, China, June 12, 2017, for a scheduled port visit. Sterett's visit is the first U.S. Navy visit to Zhanjiang since 2015 and the first U.S. Navy visit to mainland China in 2017. "This visit is an exciting opportunity to promote maritime cooperation and reinforce a navy-to-navy relationship with our People's Liberation Army Navy (PLA(N) counterparts," said Cmdr. Claudine Caluori, Sterett's commanding officer. During the course of the port visit, Sailors will conduct sporting events, ship tours, and a community relations event, along with leadership office calls and receptions with the PLA(N).

Fincantieri Buys Stake in Isselnord

Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri said it has signed through one of its subsidiaries an agreement for the acquisition of a stake in Isselnord, an Italian company operating in defense-related sectors and in the main industrial branches in the civil sector, specialized in logistic support engineering, maintenance and information technologies. The agreement was signed through Fincantieri’s company Delfi, created in 2008 in joint venture with Isselnord, charged with the development of logistic support engineering and maintenance activities related to orders in the naval sector. The initial transaction is for a majority stake in the company, with full takeover to be completed within a predetermined time frame, Fincantieri said.

Fincantieri to Upgrade Malta's Patrol Vessel

Fincantieri, one of the world’s largest shipbuilding groups and number one by diversification and innovation, was awarded the contract by the Armed Forces of Malta for the upgrading of P61, an Offshore Patrol Vessel, built by Fincantieri over 10 years ago. The contract was signed by Brigadier Jeffrey Curmi, Commander of the Armed Forces of Malta, and Gian Battista Corbetta, Head of Maintenance, Refitting Overhaul & Conversion of  Fincantieri’s Naval Services Business Unit. U.S. Naval Academy: New Superintendent

The U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) has held a change of command ceremony in Annapolis, Maryland, where Vice Adm. Walter E. "Ted" Carter Jr. relieved Vice Adm. Michael Miller, becoming the 62nd academy superintendent, informs  U.S. Naval Academy Public Affairs. Carter, a native of Burrillville, Rhode Island, served as president of the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, before he was nominated in June as the next superintendent. A career naval aviator, he graduated from the Naval Academy in 1981. Miller, a native of Minot, North Dakota, and 1974 USNA graduate, retired at the ceremony, completing 40 years of active duty naval service.

Shipbuilders Grateful for Congress Budget Concensus

The Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) called the bipartisan budget agreement now passed by both houses of Congress an important first step and thanks Members of Congress for providing the much needed resources for the U.S. shipbuilding and repair industry. “Passing this bipartisan agreement was crucial because of the pending losses of construction and repair jobs the Navy forecasted if full sequestration and a continuing resolution were to remain in effect in fiscal year 2014,” said SCA President Matt Paxton.

“Save our Ships” Campaign Announced

The Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) today announced the launch of SOS: Save our Ships, a national campaign focused on bringing attention to the devastating and unintended effects sequestration and budget uncertainty continue to have on the United States Navy and naval services, as well as thousands of American shipbuilding and repair workers. The SOS campaign will feature a combination of digital advertising, earned media programming and grassroots mobilization. “The SOS campaign is about making sure that policymakers and the Administration fully appreciate the real effects of indiscriminately cutting core shipbuilding and repair functions that keep this country safe and secure, and support thousands of American jobs and local economies,” said SCA president Matt Paxton.

Navy Movers to Gain From New ONR Transportation Tool

In a significant advance for military transportation, a new web-based tool sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) brings an Expedia-like search capability to Navy planners looking to move personnel or equipment around the world quickly and affordably. The Transportation Exploitation Tool (TET) is software that allows transportation planners to easily find available space among the thousands of military and commercial flights, and ship movements, that take place each day.

USNI Appoints VAdm Daly Chief Executive Officer

On July 27, 2011, the U.S. Naval Institute (USNI) begins an important new chapter with the appointment of Vice Admiral Peter H. Daly, U.S. Navy (Ret.) as the professional society’s Chief Executive Officer. Daly served from August 2008 until June 2011 as Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff, U.S. Fleet Forces Command. He brings more than 30 years experience as a commissioned naval officer, to include command of the destroyer USS Russell (DDG 59); Commander, Destroyer Squadron 31; and Commander, Carrier Strike Group 11. He has also served as Deputy for Resources and Acquisition (J-8), Office, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; and as Senior Military Assistant to the Secretary of the Navy.

IBF Declares High Risk Area in Gulf of Aden

Following an emergency ad hoc meeting of the IBF Warlike Operations Areas Committee in on October 7, the International Bargaining Forum agreed to establish a 'high risk area' covering the major part of the with immediate effect. Reports of recent attacks and developments by naval services to provide protection were discussed at length and it was agreed that the increase in the number of attacks and the number of seafarers currently held hostage was deeply disturbing, although the establishment of the Maritime Security Patrol Area was welcomed as an effort to bring greater security to seafarers serving on ships transiting the Gulf.

Fowler Assumes Command of U.S. Naval Academy

Vice Adm. Jeffrey L. Fowler relieved Vice Adm. Rodney P. Rempt as Superintendent of the United States Naval Academy during a change of command ceremony held in Alumni Hall on June 8. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Mullen praised Rempt’s accomplishments during his four years at the Naval Academy, commending his focus on developing midshipmen as combat leaders of character. “As a Naval Academy grad, I want to thank you for all that you have done for my alma mater, the naval services, and the nation,” Mullen said. Rempt, a surface warfare officer and a 1966 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, became the 59th superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy in August 2003. “I am eternally indebted to the finest faculty in the country,” said Rempt.
