Wärtsilä to Supply Navigation Systems for 10 Arctic LNG Carriers
Wärtsilä Voyage has signed a contract to deliver radio and integrated navigation systems for 10 icebreaking liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers to be constructed for the Arctic LNG-2 project.The order was placed in January 2021 and is now in process of execution, in partnership with South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries Co. Ltd shipyard. The new contract is an extension of the announcement made last summer, where Wärtsilä Voyage equipped five LNG carriers with integrated bridge systems under the same project.

Cyprus-Russia Agreement on Commercial Shipping
An Agreement was signed between the Cyprus Republic and the Russian Federation on Commercial Shipping, the provisions of which were transposed to Law 19 (VII)/2017, which was published in the Government Gazette of the Republic on 15/12/17. The purpose of this Agreement is the setting up and development of relations between the two State-Parties in the maritime transport sector, ensuring effective cooperation in the shipping sector, and its contribution to the overall development of trade and economic relations between the two State-Parties through the further strengthening of their cooperation in the maritime transport sector, said a press release from Michael Kyprianou.
Abu Dhabi Ports Marine Subsidiary Rebranded as SAFEEN
Abu Dhabi Ports, the master developer, operator and manager of ports and Khalifa Industrial Zone (Kizad) in the Emirate, has renamed its subsidiary, Abu Dhabi Marine Services, as ‘SAFEEN’ –meaning ships in Arabic- in a bid to rebrand itself. The announcement was followed closely by the brand winning the prestigious International Safety Management (ISM) certification from the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Further, as part of expanding its fleet and improving services, SAFEEN has added a new tug boat named ‘MAQTAA’ to its existing fleet of five tugs, five pilot boats, six speed boats, one buoy maintenance boat and two oil spill response boats. The company plans to acquire three more tug boats by the end of 2016.

NOAA and American Pilots’ Association (APA) sign Memorandum of Agreement to advance safe navigation in coastal waters. Dr. Kathryn Sullivan , NOAA Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Environmental Observation & Prediction, signs an agreement that recognizes the longstanding working relationship between marine pilots and NOAA’s navigational services. Coast Survey has a long-term working relationship with the American Pilots’ Association , whose members include virtually all of the 1,200 state-licensed marine pilots working in the 24 coastal states and the Great Lakes.
'Motorways of the Sea' Contract MMT for Hydrographic Survey
MMT (Sweden) has been awarded parts of two separate hydrographic survey contracts for the EU financed project 'MONALISA' for the Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA) and the Finnish Transport Agency (FTA). MONALISA is a Motorways of the Sea project which aims at giving a concrete contribution to efficient, safe and environmentally friendly maritime transport. This is done through development, demonstration and dissemination of innovative e-navigational services to the shipping industry, which can lay the groundwork for a future international deployment. Quality assurance of hydrographic data for the major navigational areas in Swedish and Finnish waters in the Baltic Sea contributes to improving safety and the optimization of ship routes.
NOAA: New AK Chart Makes Arctic Safer
NOAA: New Alaska navigational chart makes increased Arctic shipping safer; Kotzebue Harbor chart replaces measurements last taken in 19th century. NOAA formally presented today to Alaska officials a new nautical chart for Kotzebue Sound in the Alaskan Arctic, a sparsely charted region that is seeing increased vessel traffic because of the significant loss of summer sea ice. The new chart depicts the full range of depth measurements and object detection acquired during a full ocean bottom survey last summer by the NOAA hydrographic survey ship Fairweather.
Svanes Joins NAVTOR as new Managing Director
E-navigation company NAVTOR said that Tor A. Svanes, the founder of C-MAP Norway, has joined the business in the position of Managing Director. Svanes, who is well known within the maritime industry for his contribution to the development of ECDIS and the electronic chart concept, will now lead and develop the NAVTOR team and proposition. Stavanger-based Smedvig established NAVTOR in June 2011 after the firm spotted an emerging opportunity in the maritime marketplace. As carriage requirements for ENCs moved towards an official IMO mandate, Smedvig saw an opening to build up an e-navigation company that could meet the new demand for digital navigational services.
ICS Report Advises on Action to Reduce Accidents
Navigation safety and environmental protection in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore could further improve following a detailed investigation into accident reports by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS). ICS (as part of a wider initiative being undertaken by the Round Table of international shipping associations) has conducted a survey of incident reports which it is anticipated will result in the development of agreed proposals to enhance the management of traffic in the Straits. With more than 70,000 vessels each year (over 150 a day) transiting this strategically important international waterway, ICS believes it is imperative that safety continues to be prioritised.

The Royal Navy’s leading Operational Commander visited the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) Friday, March 27, to see the navigational services and charts that the organisation provides at first hand. The Commander-in-Chief Fleet (CINCFLEET), Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope KCB OBE, is responsible for delivering the Fleet Operational Capability. This includes the operation, resourcing and training of the Royal Navy’s ships, submarines and aircraft, and personnel including the Royal Marines.
