Mississippi Hosts Fourth Annual National SeaPerch Challenge
The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS, and the Mississippi Regional SeaPerch Committee in mid-May hosted the Fourth National SeaPerch Challenge on the campus of Southern Miss. It was here that 108 teams of 451 middle and high school students – students from 19 states, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and for a first time ever, and international team from New Zealand – convened at the University’s Payne Center and Johnson Natatorium for a weekend of competition and fun.
NAVSEA Warfare Center Personnel Recognized
Four Naval Sea System Command (NAVSEA) warfare center scientists and engineers were among those recognized, July 23, at the annual Top Navy Scientists and Engineers of the Year award ceremony at the Pentagon. Deck Drain Inserts Offer Fleet Savings
In the past, deck drains on all Navy surface ships and non-nuclear carriers were giving Sailors maintenance nightmares-repairs took too long , and were costly to replace. More importantly, the deck drains posed a potential safety hazard if a chemical/biological/radiological (CBR) attack occurred on the ship. However, through the Naval Sea Systems Command's (NAVSEA's) Cumbersome Work Practices (CWP) process, a solution has been developed that will save numerous man-hours of labor, save the fleet over $620,000, and allow for a watertight/airtight closure of the deck drains in the event of a CBR attack. NAVSEA Warfare Center Product Area - Ships and Ship Systems
Product Area (PA) focus is the hallmark of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Warfare Center realignment, which provides the ability for a Product Area Director (PAD) to examine and assess similar work being accomplished across all surface and undersea warfare center divisions. PAs ensures a centralized entry for customers and for workload acceptance to increase efficiency by looking for redundancy of effort and duplication of capabilities; but, more importantly, it allows for the right work to be done by the right people at the right location. The Ships and Ship Systems (S3) Product Area provides the Navy with greater mobility, enhanced survivability, and improved payload capability through advanced technologies and innovative systems.
