L3Harris Selected for US Navy Submarine Tender Design Study
L3Harris Technologies announced it is one of three companies selected to provide Preliminary Designs for the next generation submarine tender, a support vessel that will provide expeditionary maintenance and repairs for U.S. Navy submarines.New York-listed L3Harris said it will support the development of the AS(X) ship specifications, interface specifications, ship cost estimates and construction schedules under the base AS(X) Concept Refinement and Preliminary Design contract.
The McAllister Towing Legacy
In 1864 Abraham Lincoln was president, and the U.S. was embroiled in the midst of civil war. In 1864, McAllister Towing was established (originally as the Greenpoint Lighterage Co.) in New York City. McAllister Towing has persevered, and at times, served, through nine wars, 28 presidents, at least three catastrophic stock market crashes; collapsing oil prices, generations of advances in ship technology and vessel construction and design; and an explosion in maritime regulation.
SS New York Arrives in NYC to Commemorate 9/11
Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus and New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced Sept. 6 that amphibious transport dock ship USS New York will participate in numerous events throughout the city honoring the victims and responders from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. This Day in Coast Guard History – Dec. 16
1831-Secretary of Treasury John McLane ordered Revenue cutters to conduct "winter cruises." The USRC Gallatin became the first cutter "directly authorized by the government to assist mariners in distress." 1960- A United Airlines DC-8 with 83 passengers on board collided with a TWA Super Constellation carrying 42 in the New York City area. Coast Guard helicopters, working with the aircraft of the Army, Navy and New York Police Department, transported the injured passengers from the Constellation's wreck on Staten Island to a nearby hospital. Coast Guard vessels also searched the New York harbor area. The debris they picked up was used by the Civil Aeronautics Board in its determination of the cause of the mishap. Fleet Week Parade of Ships
Commander, U.S. 2nd Fleet joined Navy League New York Council members in observing Fleet Week New York 2009's opening Parade of Ships May 20 at a reception in southern Manhattan. "On behalf of the maritime forces of the U.S. and our Canadian ally, I'd like to relay the message that 'We love New York!'" proclaimed Vice Adm. Mel Williams, Jr., to numerous civilian and military distinguished guests shortly before the ships were within sight. He pointed out the importance of such opportunities.
