Inside the Subsea Cable Firm Secretly Helping America Take on China

On Feb. 10 last year, the cable ship CS Dependable appeared off the coast of the island of Diego Garcia, an Indian Ocean atoll that’s home to a discreet U.S. naval base.Over the next month, the ship’s crew covertly laid an underwater fiber-optic cable to the military base, an operation code-named “Big Wave,” according to four people with direct knowledge of the mission, as well as a Reuters analysis of satellite imagery and ship tracking data.The new super-fast internet link to Diego Garcia, which has not previously been reported, will boost U.S. military readiness in the Indian Ocean, a region where China has expanded its naval influence over the last decade.The CS Dependable is owned by SubCom…

Keppel Acquires $50m Stake Battery Biz

Keppel Corporation Limited, through its wholly owned subsidiary KepVenture Pte Ltd (Keppel), has entered into an agreement with Envision AESC to invest $50 million for a minority stake in Envision AESC Group Ltd, a leading intelligent lithium-ion battery company. This co-investment with Envision is in line with Keppel's efforts to deploy innovative concepts in its solutions for sustainable urbanization.Envision AESC Group Ltd recently completed the acquisition of Automotive Energy Supply Corporation (AESC), a former venture between Nissan Motor Company (Nissan) and the NEC Group. It has also acquired the entire share capital of NEC Energy Devices, Ltd., a battery electrode manufacturing company owned by NEC Corporation.

NYK Holds 8th Environmental Management Conference

NYK welcomed about 60 environmental supervisors from 47 NYK Group companies to the group’s annual Environmental Management Conference in Tokyo. NYK holds this conference with NYK Group companies to share information on environmental practices and strengthen environmental management within the group. At this eighth conference, the three companies below were commended for their efforts to achieve the NYK management vision of “a best balance between economic progress and environmental protection,” and each of the companies was asked to give a presentation on its activities. 1.   NYK Business Systems Co. Google Consortium to Lay 'FASTER' Trans-Pacific Cable

Google and five other large companies team up to build a cable under the Pacific Ocean that will deliver incredibly fast internet speeds informs system supplier NEC Corporation. A consortium of six global companies have signed commercial agreements to build and operate a new Trans-Pacific cable system to be called “FASTER” which will connect the United States to two landing locations in Japan. The total amount of investment for the FASTER system is estimated to be approximately USD $300 million. MHI, NEC Collaborate for Energy Demand Forecast

"Energy Demand Forecast System for Ships," Enabling Energy Savings During Operations at Sea Based on Precise Projections. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and NEC Corporation will collaborate in the development of an "Energy Demand Forecast System for Ships" applying NEC's big data analysis technologies to achieve energy savings during ship navigation. Plans call for MHI to begin marketing the system by the end of the 2014 fiscal year ending March 2015. The Energy Demand Forecast System for Ships is to be jointly developed integrating MHI and NEC's respective technologies and knowhow.

Energy Demand Forecast System for Ships is on the Stocks

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and NEC Corporation are to collaborate in the development of an "Energy Demand Forecast System for Ships" applying NEC's big data analysis technologies to achieve ship navigation energy savings. Plans call for MHI to begin marketing the system by the end of the 2014 fiscal year ending March 2015. The new system will project future energy demand based on previously collected data relating to ships' energy consumption, weather patterns, ambient air temperature, time of day, etc. Its forecasting technology will use NEC's heterogeneous mixture learning technologies, i.e. technologies that automatically detect massive patterns hidden in big data, discover useful patterns, and automatically switch reference rules according to the analyzed data.
