Grounded Tug Spills Diesel in Alaska

A unified command consisting of the U.S. Coast Guard, Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, and Western Towboat, continues to lead the response efforts for the grounded tug in the Neva Strait, which initially occurred Monday morning.The tug owner, Western Towboat, contracted Hanson Maritime, SEAPRO, and Global Diving & Salvage who are currently on-scene and continuing pollution recovery efforts and salvage planning.A total of 3,000 gallons of diesel has been pumped from a ruptured tank aboard the tugā€¦

Sovcomflot's Tankers Find Refuge in the Bahamas Amid Growing Sanctions

Russian Owned Oil Tanker Diverting from Canada to Caribbean

Ecospeed Coatings Chosen for Russian Icegoing Tug Pair

Three years ago, an Ecospeed hull coating was applied on Antarctic, a shallow draft anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessel owned by Ark Shipping Company. The success of this application led the vessel's owner to order the same protection for its next two shallow draught AHTS vessels: Polar and Polus. Building of these vessels will start in 2021 and will again take place at the Atlas Shipyard in Kocaeli, Turkey.Ark Shipping is a Russian river and sea shipping company that has been operating in the transport and logistics market since 1992.

Wärtsilä Rolls-out Pure Gas Marine Engine

Finnish corporation Wärtsilä has launched the 31SG pure gas engine for marine market applications.The 31SG is based on the successful Wärtsilä 31 product platform; the diesel version of the engine has been recognized by Guinness World Records as being the worldā€™s most efficient 4-stroke diesel engine.The Wärtsilä 31SG engine further reduces the total cost of ownership and the environmental footprint for vessels operating in regions where there is a developed gas infrastructure. Rosmorport Orders Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger

Damen Shipyards Groupsaid it has signed a contract with LLC Onego Shipyard to build a Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD) 2000. The vessel will be built by order of FSUE Rosmorport in Petrozavodsk (the Russian Federation) and will be the sixth dredger built under the design of the Dutch company Damen. The vessel will be delivered to the customer in 2019. Construction of this new TSHD 2000 will involve Damen Technical Cooperation (DTC); the service that company provides to facilitate shipbuilding operations at a local yard of the end-clientā€™s choice.

Arctic Responsibilities Laid Out

Developments in Arctic resource recovery and transportation are providing the main focal point for many at NEVA and this yearā€™s event in St Petersburg comes at a pivotal time for both the economic and ecological prospects of the region. Export shipments of LNG from the Yamal peninsula are due to start shortly, with the lead vessel of 15 in the ā€˜Yamal LNG fleetā€™ recently completing the first unaccompanied voyage by a gas carrier through the Northern Sea Route by way of prelude. The LNG carrier Christophe de Margerie loaded cargo at the Snøhvit LNG export terminal in Norway, taking the NSR to deliver LNG to Boryeong in South Korea in 15 days versus 30 days via the Suez Canal.

IMO Talks Polar Matters in Russia

An International Maritime Organization (IMO) film showing how the IMO Polar Code supports safe and environmentally-friendly shipping in the Arctic and Antarctic waters is being screened at the NEVA 2017 International Maritime Exhibition and Conference (19-22 September), in St Petersburg, Russia. IMO's Assistant Secretary-General Lawrence Barchue delivered the opening address, updating the audience on regulatory standards affecting the safety of international shipping, fishing and offshore operations and the protection of the marine environment. Barchue also spoke of the importance of sharing a common understanding on the issues that affect the maritime community today.

Damen to Open Novorossiysk Service Hub

Damen Shipyards Group said it has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Delo Group of companies, establishing plans to open a service hub in the Russian port of Novorossiysk. According to Damen, the new hub will aim to optimize the services provided to the growing number of Damen vessels operating in the region in addition to strengthening its relationship with the Delo Group. The LOI was signed by representatives from the two companies during the NEVA 2017 trade fair in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Russian Engineers Work to Create Multipurpose WIG Craft

A team of Russian developers has been working to create a multipurpose seagoing ekranoplan, which they say could contribute significantly to the speed of seaborne traffic. The project will be presented by MariNet, the National Technological Initiative (NTI) working group, on the sidelines of the International Exhibition NEVA-2017 in St Petersburg, September 19-21. Flag Raised to Russian Icebreaker Innovation

A spectacular ceremony was held on the lead vessel of the icebreaker project 21900M in St. Petersburg on 23 September, forming part of the NEVA 2015 Programme. Guests and dignitaries came together to witness the official flag-raising ceremony on board the icebreaker 'Vladivostok' and to celebrate all those involved in the project. The diesel-powered icebreakers 21900M project, a modification of project 21900, was laid down at the Vyborg Shipyard in October 2012. 'Vladivstok' is the lead vessel in the series of three diesel-electric icebreakers built for FSUE Rosmorport and classed by the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping. GC Hidromek, Aker JV to Develop Dredgers

GC ā€œHydromechā€ (Russia) Inc and Aker Arctic (Finland) signed an agreement on strategic partnership at the NEVA 2015 International Exhibition and Conferences yesterday. The agreement signed until 2019 and provides for the joint development and promotion of ice class dredging vessels with additional functionality for working in the Arctic and the Far North. The company are sure that such vessels are in high demand within domestic and  international  markets with the development of the Northern ports of Russia. GC  ā€œHidromekā€  (Russia) is a leader in the design and manufacture of dredges in Russia. The plant is a vertically integrated shipbuilding enterprise, including metallurgical, ship-and machining production.

RS Inks Tugs Deal with DAMEN

On 22 September 2015 within the frames of the 13-th International Maritime Exhibition and Conferences of Russia ā€“ NEVA 2015, Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) and DAMEN Shipyards Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding on construction to the RS class of four new ASD 2609 Ice tugs. Two tugs will be built at DAMEN in China, the other two - in Romania. According to Mr. Pavel Shikhov, RS Chief Operating Officer, RS has been interacting with DAMEN since 1999. As of today, the RS-classed fleet comprises over 60 ships built to DAMEN designs. 15 ships are under construction in Russia and at foreign shipyards: tugs of projects ASD 3010 Ice, ASD 2810 Ice, ASD 2609 Ice, as well as new dredging vessels, projects TSHD 1000 and TSHD 2000.

Wärtsilä Adds Thruster to Inland River Portfolio

Wärtsilä introduces the latest addition to its thruster product portfolio, the Wärtsilä WST-14 steerable thruster, which represents state-of-the-art azimuthing propeller technology. It is aimed primarily at inland waterway cargo vessel applications. The new thruster will provide increased reliability and efficiency, while also lowering costs. Among the many innovations incorporated into the WST-14 are its space-saving compact design, an integrated slipping clutch that provides a cost competitive solution for manoeuvring when combined with a fixed pitch (FP) propeller, and the ability to maintain and service the propeller shaft and steering seals without requiring a complete overhaul of the thruster. It has a straightforward, reliable design and is ice-class rated.

Russia Sets Clear Agenda for Competitive Opportunity

Russiaā€™s renewed focus on the commercial shipbuilding industry was set as a key aim by Prime Minister, Dmitry Medvedev in his recent discussions on the development of the sector through 2015. Various industry ministries have been charged with analysing industry prospects until 2030, with the findings to be submitted by January 2015. The Russian Energy Ministry was instructed to study the needs in dedicated fleet and other marine solutions for exploration, drilling and the transportation of crude oil, gas and gas condensate by 2030. This is to be undertaken in conjunction with OAO Rosneft, OAO Gazprom, LUKOIL, JSC NOVATEK and other stakeholders, taking into account the planned production volumes of hydrocarbons while developing offshore fields.

Russian Shipyards Deliver Tugboat, Short-Sea Bulk Carrier

The sixth short-sea multi-purpose bulk carrier for North-West Shipping Co., named 'Neva Leader' has been delivered by the Nevsky Shipyard, as part of a project by Marine Engineering Bureau-Design-SPb, JSC. The tugboat RB-401 was built by Pella Shipyard for port operations in Kalingra, and to support the Russian Baltic Sea Fleet. The shipbuilder explains that multi-purpose dry-cargo vessels of deadweight more than 7000 tons RSD49 project are the largest of the existing dry-cargo vessels of the 'river-sea' type in Russia.

Navis Joins Aker Arctic for Ice Class DP Design

Navis Engineering Oy and Aker Arctic Technology Inc. have signed a scientific and technical cooperation agreement covering the joint development of technology for dynamic positioning (DP) systems for icebreakers and ice-class vessels. The agreement was signed in St. Petersburg during NEVA 2013 at the end of September. Dynamic positioning systems manufactured by Navis Engineering have been installed on a number of icebreakers and ice-class vessels in recent years, including the Polar supply and research icebreaker SA Agulhas II, the Canadian Coast Guard Scientific icebreaker Amundsen and the Sovcomflot-owned multifunctional icebreaking supply vessels Vitus Bering and Aleksey Chirikov, operating for Exxon Neftegaz Ltd in Sakhalin waters in Russia.

Brazilian Shipbuilder Urges Russia to Strengthen Maritime Ties

AMEC Kromav, the Rio de Janeiro-headquartered specialist company for shipbuilding and offshore activities, has urged Russian industry to take full advantage of Brazilā€™s multibillion dollar offshore industry opportunities. In a comprehensive presentation at NEVA in St Petersburg, Rosalo Sales, Director of Business Development & Strategic Planning at AMEC Kromav told delegates that the Petrobras Business Plan 2013-2017 had scheduled investments of more than $230 billion in Brazil (95%) and $11.7 billion (5%) overseas, with opportunities for annual contracts worth $28.4 billion alone in Brazil. ā€œThe current oil tanker fleet must go through a $101 billion or $14.2 billion per annum modernization program by 2020ā€¦

RS Reaches Several Agreements at Neva

During the maritime Neva exhibition, taking place this week in St Petersburg, Russia, a number of agreements were signed promoting use of advanced IT solutions and enhancement of professional training within the maritime industry. Admiral S. O. Makarov State University of Sea and River Fleet, classification society Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS), Petrobalt Design Office and the Dutch company Numeriek Centrum Groningen (NCG) signed a quadripartite agreement on the establishment of NUPAS-CADMATIC Training and Innovation Center. Nordic Yards at Russia's Top Shipbuilding Fair

"Russia is and will remain an essential market for us", stated Vitaly Yusufov, owner and Managing Director of Nordic Yards. Currently there are a number of Russian contracts in the Nordic order books. For example yesterday, September 23, construction of two ice-breaking rescue and salvage ships ordered by Russia's Ministry of Transport in December 2012 started at the Nordic Yards shipyard in Wismar. After delivery in 2015 they will be used for patrol and rescue operations on the northern Polar Sea route.
