Chuan Hup To Buy 20 New Barges & Tugs

Marine shipping company Chuan Hup Holdings expects a new contract to ship coal to Indonesia to contribute significantly to group earnings in 2001, according to a company official. Chuan Hup reportedly has a fleet of about 145 barges, tug boats and other vessels, but would have to add to that to service the new contract. The current estimate calls for about 20 new barges and tug boats.

Big Power for Z-drive Barge

Seaspan Coastal Intermodal of the Washington Marine Group put a new trailer-carrying push-barge into operation in late summer. It is the second that they have built to this design and they have made a few upgrades. The original barge was connected in as an articulated-tug-barge (ATB) unit with a friction pad system. On arrival at Seaspan's associated company Vancouver Shipyards, from the builders in China, the new barge had sets of solid steel pads welded into place in the stern notch. Each of the port and starboard pads includes three vertically distributed 400 mm diameter receptor holes for the air-over-hydraulic pins that had been retrofitted to the tug, Seaspan Challenger. This JAK-400 ATB system provides a powerful positive lock for the ATB. The new barge, at 456 x 82 ft.

Senesco To Build Another 80,000-Barrel, Double-Hulled Barge

Richmond Express Starts Operation at RMT

The Port of Virginia’s new barge – the Richmond Express arrived in the Norfolk Harbor and scheduled to sail Sunday and be at Richmond Marine Terminal (RMT) Monday, Feb. This new barge helps reduce congestion on I-64 and wear-and-tear on the road by taking trucks off of that roadway and moving the cargo by barge. Thus far into fiscal year 2017 (began July 1, 2016), 11,225 containers have moved between Richmond Marine Terminal (RMT) and the Norfolk Harbor by barge, a 41 percent increase when compared with the same period in fiscal year 2016.

Young Brothers to Invest $186m

Young Brothers Ltd. announced it will spend $186 million over 10 years on a new fleet of barges, tugboats, shipping containers, lifts and other equipment. The 106-year-old company is Hawaii’s largest interisland cargo line. The company's first new barge, a car-carrying roll-on/roll-off barge that can transport 500 vehicles, is scheduled for delivery late this year, sources said. The vessel, which is enclosed to protect cars from sea spray and salt air, is now being designed by Glosten Associates Inc. of Seattle, a naval architecture firm. The company now has 11 barges and eight tugboats, but plans to begin retiring some of those in the coming years. The new fleet of eight barges and six tugboats will replace the old vessels with more efficient ones.

AFT-Chemoil’s New Barge Christened

AFT-Chemoil’s newest barge, the Amalia, was named in Rotterdam on December 9th.The Amalia will immediately go into operation alongside the Maxima which started service in 2003. Both barges are jointly owned by AFT-Chemoil and Rotterdam barge operator FTS-Hofftrans. The Amalia has a capacity of 4,200 mts while the Maxima’s capacity is 6,745mts. In combination the two barges provide AFT-Chemoil a significant strength in the Rotterdam bunker market. Both barges are ideally suited to the requirements of today’s newest containerships for larger volumes and faster pumping rates. Using the two barges together AFT-Chemoil can now deliver through one hose connection quantities in excess of 10,000 mts at rates exceeding 1,000 mts per hour.

Ingram Barge to Participate in EPA’s SmartWay

Ingram Barge Company announced its participation in the new Barge Freight component of the SmartWay Transport Partnership, a public-private partnership between the U.S. Government’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the country’s leading private industry freight carriers and freight users aimed at reducing carbon, oxides of nitrogen and particulate matter emissions. Ingram has been involved with the EPA in helping to develop, test and pilot the tool since 2010 and Ingram hopes that others will follow its lead in committing to improve efficiency and reduce pollution. SmartWay, currently composed of more than 3,000 truck and rail carriers and the shippers that hire them, is adding a new Barge Freight component this year.

Young Brothers to Invest in Boats, Barges

Hawaii's largest provider of interisland cargo transportation is planning a major multi million-dollar upgrade. Young Brothers Ltd. said it will invest $186m over the next 10 years on everything from new barges and tugboats to a revamped information system that will allow customers to book online and track their cargo. Young Brothers said the investment is needed because of the company's aging fleet and because increased demand has the cargo company stretched to capacity right now. The investment includes eight new barges that can carry 40 percent more cargo and six new tugboats that are faster than the current fleet and use less fuel. (Source: Hawaii Channel.com)

Barge Damaged on Maiden Voyage

The Eva Joan, the newest barge of Petaluma sand and gravel importer Landing Way Depot, remains stuck in San Francisco Bay after suffering damage July 4, according to the Petaluma Argus-Courier. The barge was launched in the Petaluma River in early June but began taking on water while returning from its maiden voyage with 3,000 tons of Canadian sand offloaded from an ocean freighter. The sand was transferred to another barge and the Eva Joan was towed to a marina in Alameda while naval architects try to determine what went wrong. (Source: Petaluma Argus-Courier)

Senesco Marine Lands Barge Contract

Senesco Marine signed a contract to build a 100,000-barrel double-hulled liquid fuel barge for Reinauer Transportation. Over the past year, Senesco Marine has delivered two 80,000-barrel double-hulled barges and is currently working on two more for delivery this year. Both 80,000-barrel barges currently under construction are well ahead of schedule, something Senesco Marine CEO Gary Schuler attributes to the company's new on time design, build and delivery process. Schuler is predicting that the new 100,000-barrel barge will also be completed ahead of the scheduled January 2005 delivery date. "We're very pleased to be working with Senesco Marine on the construction of our new barge," said Chris Reinauer, Manager of New Construction for Reinauer Transportation.

Crowley to Expand Barge Fleet

Crowley Maritime Corporation’s Vessel Management Services subsidiary has awarded construction contracts to Gunderson Marine of for – in addition to two already under construction – eight Heavy Lift Series 400 x 105-ft.-wide deck barges. Once completed, these barges will handle project work for the offshore energy industry in the Gulf of Mexico and elsewhere and will expand ’s fleet of this type barge to as many as 13 by 2012. Gunderson is the same company that built the first three barges in the series – the Marty J, 455-2 and 455-3 (now the Julie B) – all of which were delivered last year. Under construction are barges 455-4 and 455-5, which are scheduled for delivery in the first and second quarters respectively.

Shearer Group Designs Bunker Barge

The Shearer Group, Inc. (TSGI) informs it has recently completed the design of a 130’ x 35’ x 10’ double skin bunker barge for an unspecified Gulf Coast marine fuel supplier.   The new barge design features below deck piping for cleaner and safer deck operations, the designer noted. Above deck are five oil tanks and one potable water tank.   Capacities: Fuel oil: 4,500 barrels Potable water: 40,000 gallons Lube oil: 20,000 gallons  

Total Barges into St. Nazaire with Low Sulphur

Total Marine Fuels has started delivering low-sulphur bunkers by barge from its Donges refinery for the port of St Nazaire/Montoir, in France. Total has been supplying low-sulphur bunkers in the St Nazaire region for more than a year, but until now deliveries have only been available by truck. David Bleasdale, General Manager of Total Marine Fuels, says, “Total continues to invest in new products and services on a wide scale, with the emphasis where necessary on the need to supply low-sulphur fuels to key markets. “Elsewhere, we are working towards offering low-sulphur fuel in Fos/Lavera next year, while CEPSA, where Total is a significant shareholder, is ready to offer it now in Algeciras. Zeebrugge, meanwhile, is a big success story for Total.

Chemoil / All Round Fuel Trading Debut New Barge

The 6,745 metric tonne (mt) Maxima is now operational in Rotterdam. The Maxima represents the future for European bunker supplies. The double-hulled tanker barge was launched in Rotterdam of the Maxima. Jointly owned by bunker supplier Chemoil / All Round Fuel Trading BV (Chemoil/ARFT), fuel oil transportation company FTS/Hofftrans, and shipbuilder Breko Nieuwbouw under the name Maxima Tankers BV, the Maxima will begin operations on April 29.

Houston Ship Channel Expansion Planned

Kinder Morgan announces land purchase, plans to construct dock and expand terminal capacity on Houston Ship Channel. Kinder Morgan Energy Partners say they will invest $106 million to purchase approximately 20 acres adjacent to its Pasadena, Texas, terminal, build nine new tanks with a storage capacity of 1.2 million barrels at its Galena Park terminal under long-term customer agreements, and construct a new barge dock that is expected to help relieve current barge congestion in the Houston Ship Channel.

Columbia Coastal Announces Fleet Expansion

Columbia Coastal Transport added the first of four new container barges to its fleet in the Port of Charleson, S.C. Columbia New York (formerly Columbia Trader) will be operated in the company's southern service, calling the ports of Charleston, Savannah and Miami on a regular weekly basis. Columbia New York was refurbished at the Detyens Shipyard in Charleston. The newly configured barge will be able to transport both 20 and 40 ft. containers, with capacities of 590 TEUs or 295 FEUs. Three more barges are scheduled to come into service over the next six weeks, including Columbia Newark (capacity of 670 TEUs); Columbia Philadelphia (capacity of 480 TEUs); and Columbia Wilmington (capacity 480 TEUs).

Jeffboat Wins Barge Contract

Jeffboat has been awarded a contract to build two 52,000 net barrel ocean service tank barges for Vane Line Bunkering of Baltimore, Maryland. These barges are the fifth and sixth built to the same design at Jeffboat since 2001. Work on the new barges is expected to begin in June 2004 and extend through September 2005. The barges are to be built for coastwise manned and ocean unmanned light oil service. The new contract contains options for Vane to purchase up to two additional barges of the same design. Jeffboat is currently constructing two similar barges for Vane, the DOUBLESKIN 55 and DOUBLESKIN 57. These barges are designed for coastwise manned and ocean unmanned heated heavy oil service. These barges are set to deliver in May 2004 and October 2004 respectively.

Crowley to Build 400 x 105 ft. Deck Barges

Crowley has awarded a two-barge construction contract to Gunderson Marine of Portland, Oregon, with the first vessel to be available for service in early 2007. The new construction of these two Heavy Lift Series 400 x 105 ft. deck barges to handle project work for the offshore energy industry in the Gulf of Mexico will expand and keep current Crowley's fleet for customers of the company's marine services business segment. Crowley's new Heavy Lift Series 400-x 105 ft. barges will provide both the capacity and deck strength needed to accommodate the favored larger units for deepwater development. The barges will also be suitable for use in other regions, including Alaska, where Crowley has regularly performed summer sealifts to the North Slope.

Total Lubmarine Celebrates Naming of Trafuco 7

Marine lubricant provider Total Lubmarine has welcomed the naming of the newest addition to its fleet, Trafuco 7. The naming ceremony for the newly-built vessel took place at The Port of Antwerp, in Belgium, in front of 80 guests. Trafuco 7 is a 795m3 capacity barge divided into six compartments that will transport Total Lubmarine’s oils, system oils and trunk piston engine oils, including the Talusia, Aurelia, Atlanta and Disola ranges, with a minimum order of 2,000 liters per grade.

Atlantic Energy Enters Total Lubmarine Fleet

A naming ceremony was held for Atlantic Energy, the newest addition to marine lubricant provider Total Lubmarine’s fleet. The ceremony for the the newly-built vessel took place on November 18 at Posttrans B.V in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Atlantic Energy is a 1,560 dwt, double-hulled barge. She features a 35-meter bunker boom, allowing delivery to the largest container ships in the world calling at Rotterdam port and Europoort. Her 16 cargo tanks will transport Total Lubmarine’s cylinder oils, system oils and trunk piston engine oils.

McDonough Launch First of Seven Spud Barges

McDonough Marine Service has launched the first in a series of seven new inland spud barges. The spud barges are being constructed at Yager Marine Industries in Owensboro, Kentucky and range from 110’ to 140’ in length. The first of the series to be launched is the KS 4011 with the dimensions of 110’ x 40’ x 7’6”. The barge was designed with a boxed stern that provides maximum flotation during crane operations. This design provides operators an opportunity to work safely in the inland marine construction environment, McDonough said.

ACL Launches First in Tanker Barge Series

American Commercial Lines Inc. announced that it launched the first in a series of tanker barges to be constructed at its Jeffboat manufacturing facility through 2012 to replace retiring fleet capacity. The new barges will improve the age profile and quality of ACL's fleet. The first of these barges, launched on Tuesday, May 10 by ACL's President and CEO Mike Ryan, was a clean service tanker with a capacity of 30,000 barrels. It includes a redesigned stainless steel piping system and a new radial rake design that will also be found on the tankers the Company plans to build over the next 20 months.
