ClassNK Approves Niigata Dual-fuel Engine Design
Classification society ClassNK has granted approval to the design of the new 28AHX-DF dual-fuel engine developed by Niigata Power Systems Co., Ltd. The new engine is slated to be used as the main engine on a new LNG-fuelled tugboat being built by Keihin Dock Co., Ltd. for NYK Line. The vessel will be Japan’s first LNG fuelled vessel, excluding LNG carriers. New regulations for Emission Control Areas (ECA), including new stricter limits on sulfur emissions as well as the IMO’s Tier III NOx emission limits, are driving demand for new engine and emission control technologies.

MHI, Wärtsilä Agree on Engine Development
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and Wärtsilä Corporation of Finland have signed a joint development agreement on May 15, 2008 to design and develop new small, low-speed marine diesel engines of less than 450 mm cylinder bore. The two companies see good business potential in pooling their resources and experience to develop new small marine engines of less than 450 millimetre (mm) cylinder bore. Such engines are suitable for a wide variety of small ship types, including bulk carriers, product tankers, chemical tankers, container feeder vessels, and reefer ships. Such ships are employed in worldwide trades but with the smaller types being specifically employed in short-sea and coastal services.
New Volvo Penta Between Regular Runs
MF Vardehorn, a Norwegian car and passenger ferry, was having problems with one of its four propulsion engines. The contract to replace the engine was awarded to Marhaug A/S, Volvo Penta’s dealer in Svolvaer, Norway. The replacement, which involved cutting holes in the ship’s hull to install the new engine, was completed between two scheduled runs by the ferry. “We are extremely satisfied with the engine replacement and the manner in which Volvo Penta helped us solve our problem. The work was completed quickly, without requiring us to take the ferry out of traffic,” says shipping company inspector Jan Sletteng of TFDS, owner of the MF Vardehorn. Volvo Penta has been expanding its product program by including marine diesel engines with cylinder volumes ranging from 25 to 65 liters.
MHI and Wärtsilä to Jointly Develop Small-Size Engines
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and Wärtsilä Corporation of will jointly develop new small, low-speed marine diesel engines with cylinder bores of 350 and 400 millimeters (mm). The two companies agreed on joint design and development of engines of less than 450 mm cylinder bore in May 2008, based on a previously signed strategic alliance agreement. The new engines, to have a power range of 3,500–9,000 kW, will be developed in collaboration, taking advantage of the strengths of the two companies.
WPP Rebuild Program Gives Engines New Life
Worldwide Power Products (WPP), a power-generation equipment provider to industrial and petroleum clients worldwide, today announced it is rebuilding Tier I engines to meet Tier II hazardous emissions standards, making them compliant with leading offshore certifications. WPP has already closed deals in Dubai and Singapore for these newly rebuilt engines and is offering them for sale globally. “ABS, one of the top offshore certification companies, will no longer certify new or rebuilt offshore rigs or vessels operating with Tier I engines,” said WPP VP of Sales and Engineering Dave Vennie.

MTU Expands in India with Engine Test Cell Facility
The Tognum Group company MTU India opened a new engine test cell facility at its MTU India Service Center in Tathawade, Pune (India). The test cell’s dynamometer system is capable of testing all MTU engines up to Series 4000 engines in the range from 300 to 4,300kW, as per MTU test protocol, and for all applications. In February 2010, MTU India opened its new head office for sales and service operations in Pune. The addition of the new engine test cell facility to the MTU India Service Centre brings a new phase in MTU India’s ability to meet its Indian customers’ needs in the region.
Durban University of Tech New Engine Room Simulator
Transas Marine International in cooperation with its local distributor Radio Holland South Africa has recently installed a new engine room simulator at Durban University of Technology (DUT) Department of Maritime Studies, South Africa. The first group to be trained on the new engine room simulator will be the students registered for Marine Engineering Knowledge I, starting this semester. Part of their assessment will be a completion of series of progressive tasks aimed at obtaining basic operator skills and familiarization with an engine room equipment.
Drone Wars: French Navy Examines Cutting-edge Tech
Defense technology company Naval Group and helicopter manufacturer Airbus Helicopters will together lead an effort to develop warship based aerial drones for the French Navy. The French companies were recently contracted by the French Directorate General of Armaments (DGA) to perform a “de-risking” study ahead of future construction of tactical helicopter drones. The demonstration project will eventually lead to trials of the drone launch system, mission system and airborne rotary-wing vehicle, conducted from a French Navy vessel.
Successful First Year for Volvo Penta’s Large Marine Diesel Engines
Last year's agreement with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has resulted in an expansion of Volvo Penta's product program. With a range of diesel engines of up to 1,700 kW, Volvo Penta can now target entirely new customer groups, thereby building the foundation for a considerable expansion of its marine commercial business segment. Furetank Rederi AB on Donsö outside Gothenburg was the first company to acquire one of the new engines. At the end of April, the shipping company installed three 34-liter engines as generator set units in the product tanker Fure Sun, and in May, it installed three more engines in another of its tankers, the Fure Star.
First New Tier 2 Engine for European Rivers
Ketels, the Cummins dealer in Gent, Belgium, completed the first European installation of the new Cummins Tier 2 compliant QSK38 M. The engine, delivering 1200 HP at 1800 RPM, has been installed in the inland waterway barge Lambada. The new engine is evolved from the popular and reliable KTA38 that is so well known in the marine world. MTEA Launches New EPA Tier 3 Marine Engine
Mitsubishi Turbocharger and Engine America, Inc. (MTEA) announces the introduction of a 684 hp at 1,800 rpm (510 kW at 1,800 rpm) engine that complies with EPA Tier 3 regulations. The new S6R-Y3MPTAW-1 model is a propulsion-certified unit ideal for heavy-duty workboat repower applications, such as with tugboats, cargo ships and offshore vessels. It’s a high horsepower, high displacement and high mass solution that achieves Tier 3 compliance in a fully mechanically controlled package.
MAN Diesel’s First 40-Bore Electronic Engine
MAN Diesel’s first S40ME-B electronic engine has entered service. Yielding 6,810 kW at 146 rpm and an mep of 21 bar, the new engine was built by STX in Korea and is one of six ordered by Intership Navigation of Cyprus to power a series of vessels. The ME-B engine is the prime mover aboard the Pacific Adventure, a multi-purpose vessel built at HuangHai shipyard in China. The newbuilding recently passed its sea-trials successfully. The market requirement for the lowest possible propeller speed in relation to bore size has led to the new ME-B engine having a stroke/bore ratio of 4.4.
First ME-B Sees Light of Day
MAN B&W S40ME-B engine. The new engine has been built by STX Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. at its Changwon works to the south of the Korean peninsula, and passed its Type Approval Test. The 6S40ME-B is the first such prime-mover for a series of multipurpose vessels of 25,000 dwt currently being built in China by Shandong Huanghai Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., and ordered by shipowner InterShip Navigation of Cyprus. The engine delivers 6,810 kW at 146 rpm with an MEP of 21 bar. The ME-B design is based on the experience gathered from MAN Diesel’s existing MC-C and ME-C engine ranges. To suit the small-bore segment, the ME-B design uses a camshaft-operated exhaust valve and an electronically controlled fuel-injection system as seen with the ME-C range.
