DNV GL Launches Project to Test Biodegradable Lubricants

Classification society DNV GL has launched a new joint development project (JDP) in cooperation with marine insurers The Swedish Club, Norwegian Hull Club, Gard and Skuld to test the potential influence of Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs) on failures in stern tube bearings. DNV GL will oversee detailed laboratory testing of EALs by Leonardo Testing Services Ltd. at the University of Sheffield (UoS), UK. The JDP has been prompted by an increase in stern tube bearing failures over the last few years.

Growing interest in hybrid-electric power systems is expanding the search for new propulsion and energy-storage systems in the workboat sector, where compliance with emerging environmental regulations and a relentless pursuit of operational efficiency are driving change. To meet demands for cleaner more efficient power, owners are examining the potential for less conventional methods of energy generation and storage – such as fuel cells, lithium-ion batteries, super-capacitors, flywheels, wind and solar – to propel their vessels.

New Propulsion Plants for Cruise Vessel

The cruise vessel Black Watch, built in Helsinki in 1972, will be equipped with a completely new MAN B&W Diesel propulsion plant. On April 19, 2005, the Black Watch of the Red Band AS Shipping company, Norway, will arrive at the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg, where she will be completely renewed within a period of only 57 days, including a 2-day sea trial. Blohm + Voss Inks Repair Deal

Germany’s Blohm + Voss Repair GmbH (B+V) has signed a contract with Norway’s Red Band AS, Oslo, for the repair and extensive alteration work onboard the 28,670 grt passenger ship Black Watch. The 1972-built vessel will arrive at B+V during April next year (2005), the first time she has visited the yard since November 2003. The remodelling and modernisation work will concentrate on reducing the vessel’s noise and vibration level. A complete new propulsion system with four MAN/B&W 7L32/40 diesel engines, each with an output of 3,500 kW at 750 rpm, will be installed. The repair will also include the installation of new Renk double step-down gear units, NDSL-2800, and two MAN/B&W 8L21/31 Gensets for the generating power supply.

Wärtsilä's new Propulsion Test Centre has been established and funded by Wärtsilä with strong support from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, who will provide the resources to operate the facility. The test centre is located in Tuusula, southern Finland, and will enhance the company's capabilities in product validation and research activities. The new facility enables Wärtsilä to speed the development of new, high quality and environmentally sound propulsion products together with research institutes, universities and suppliers.

ABB, Samsung Develop New Propulsion Concept

Playing off of each other’s strengths, ABB and Samsung announced a jointly developed propulsion concept for the new 12,000 TEU containerships developed by Samsung. Instead of being outfitted with a rudder, the ships will feature a CRP Azipod unit mounted directly behind the standard propeller. Located on the same axis, but without any physical connection, the pod’s pulling propeller will contra-rotate in relation to the shaft-driven main propeller. The arrangement will provide an estimated improvement of more than 10 percent in hydrodynamic propulsion efficiency.

STX Engine Builds New Dual-Fuel Series

The MAN B&W Diesel Group has extended their existing, over 20-year license agreement with Korean licensee STX Engine. Within Korea, STX is now also licensed to build the new MAN B&W Diesel dual-fuel engine: the 51/60DF. The 51/60DF engine model is particularly suitable as propulsion for LNG (liquid natural gas) tankers. The Korean group STX, which has been a licence partner of the MAN B&W Diesel Group since 1984, is involved in the LNG sector with its own shipping company STX PanOcean and builds its own LNG tankers in the STX Shipyard. New propulsion concepts for this type of carrier are planning with dual-fuel engines, for which STX is bringing their own competence into the company with the new license agreement.

Large MAN Hi-speed Diesel Launched

MAN Diesel & Turbo launch the D7 engine to close the gap between its smallest medium-speed and largest high-speed engines. The D7 high-speed engine delivers a 1.5 – 5 MW output at 1,000 – 2,000 rpm is designed to serve a broad range of applications and sets new standards in fuel efficiency, power/weight ratio and TBO-intervals. The D7 is characterised by its robustness, efficiency, compactness and strength. MAN Diesel & Turbo has targeted tugboats, workboats, offshore service and supply vessels, navy patrol boats, super yachts and fast ferries as its core applications.

Latvian Navy Orders Patrol Boats

Abeking & Rasmussen has secured an order for five 25m SWATH@A&R Patrol Boats. The vessels for the Latvian Navy will be designed by A&R and constructed and delivered in co-operation with Riga Shipyard. The new vessels will derive from the well proven SWATH pilot boats, which are in operation since 1999 in the German Bight and recently in the Dutch Waters. They will have the same main dimensions and underwater ship with a complete new propulsion and accommodation concept. The new vessels will feature a modular mission bay at the fore ship.

ADSB Wins Refit Contract

Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB) has signed a contract with Bahrain’s Ministry of the Interior. The contract, for the refit of ten coast guard patrol boats, marks ADSB’s first export order for refits from another GCC country. The composite patrol boats will be delivered to the ADSB shipyard in Mussafah, Abu Dhabi, where work will continue over a two-year period in the company’s new 4,000 m2 air-conditioned Composite Workshop facility. The vessels will undergo complete refurbishment, including new propulsion and auxiliary machinery, accommodation facilities and navigation equipment. The current order book value for new vessels and refit projects at ADSB is now in excess of $1b and the company is forecasting continuing growth as its business expands throughout the GCC market.

Korean Shipyard to Build for Scorpio Tankers

Scorpio Tankers sign letter of intent with Hyundai Mipo Dockyard for two tankships. New York-listed Scorpio Tankers has signed a letter of intent with Korea's Hyundai Mipo Dockyard for two additional fuel-efficient newbuild vessels at a purchase price of $34.0 million each. The company says that the acquisition of fuel-efficient vessels is "essential" in providing a competitive edge to the company. "We believe that modernising our fleet with more fuel efficient vessels is essential in establishing a competitive advantage in our markets," said Emanuele Lauro, CEO and chairman of the board at Scorpio Tankers. The vessels are due for delivery in January 2014 and will be built with new propulsion technology…

Newport News Second Quarter EPS Up

Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) reported net earnings of $24 million, or $.074 per diluted share, for the second quarter of 2000. EBIT for the quarter was $54 million, up from an adjusted $47 million in last year's second quarter. Newport News posted second quarter revenues of $532 million versus $444 million the same time last year, reflecting gains in all business segments. The construction sector led the advance as revenues climbed to $227 million from $164 million. Increased construction work on the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan and the Virginia-class submarines, combined with advanced procurement on CVN 77, accounted for higher volume.

Two Cruise Ships For Blohm + Voss?

German shipbuilder Blohm + Voss said on Wednesday it was in negotiations to build two ships but declined to confirm a report that the potential order was to build two cruise ships worth 960 million marks ($435.2 million). It was reported earlier that the German group was in talks with a potential U.S. client to build two giant cruise ships capable of a top speed of 29 knots using a new propulsion system and hull design. "I can confirm that we are in talks for two ships," a Blohm + Voss spokeswoman said. Northern Lights Introduces New Engine

Northern Lights, a manufacturer of marine diesel generator sets and Lugger diesel engines, introduced their newest propulsion solution – the L6125H diesel engine, featuring an electronically-controlled high-pressure common-rail (HPCR) fuel system. The L6125H is based on the heavy-duty Komatsu industrial engine block and is custom marinized by the Northern Lights engineering team, whose five decades of experience are well known to mariners across the globe. The L6125H reaches a high output rating of 470 hp at 2300 rpm.

John Deere Expands Tier 3 Engine Line

John Deere Power Systems (JDPS) has introduced new propulsion ratings to its EPAMarine Tier 3 engine offerings. The new PowerTech 4045TFM85 propulsion ratings expand the John Deere Marine Tier 3 lineup with two ratings for continuous and heavy duty applications (M1 rating with 75 kW (100 hp) at 2,400 rpm and M2 rating with93 kW (125 hp) at 2,500 rpm). The PowerTech 4.5L ratings join the lineup of John Deere Marine Tier 3 propulsion engines from 75 to 559 kW (100 to 750 hp).The 4045TFM85 ratings meet U.S.

Factory Trawler to Retrofit Rolls-Royce Promas Lite Propulsion

Rolls-Royce has won its first contract to supply a new version of its innovative Promas Lite propulsion system to American ship owner Glacier Fish to improve propeller efficiency on its Guido Perla Associates designed factory trawler 'Alaska Ocean'. Promas Lite is an integrated propeller and rudder system that increases efficiency and is designed specifically for retrofitting to existing ships. French LNG containment specialist GTT, along with French containerline CMA CGM (and its subsidiary CMA Ships) and classification society DNV GL have released a technical and feasibility study for a new mega boxship dubbed the Piston Engine Room Free Efficient Containership (PERFECt), which could get rid of engine rooms all together. Wärtsilä to Power Japanese Ferries

Wärtsilä Corporation won a contract by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to supply eight Wärtsilä 12V46 medium-speed diesel engines for two new ferries ordered by Shin-Nihonkai Ferry of Osaka in Japan. The ferries are due for delivery from itsubishi's Nagasaki yard in mid 2004. propulsion with a Combined Diesel-Electric and Diesel-Mechanical (CODED) machinery plant. The new ferries will each have a single CP propeller driven mechanically by two Wärtsilä engines, while an azimuthing pod drive immediately aft of the main propeller will be electrically driven from two Wärtsilä-engined generating sets. contra-rotation to the main propeller, thus contra-rotating propeller (CRP) pod propulsion. MAN Propels Purse Seiners Series

In February, a new propulsion package contract was made between the Peruvian company COPEINCA (Corporacion Pesquera Inca S.A.) and MAN Diesel & Turbo, Frederikshavn. Three newbuildings powered by 6L21/31-VBS propulsion packages are to operate off the coast of Peru – primarily for anchovy fishing for the production of fish meal. When the ships’ annual quota has been utilized (takes between 20 days and three months depending on the capacity and vessel efficiency), the vessels convert to mackerel and horse mackerel fishing for the rest of the year.

WSF Accepting Propulsion Package Bids

A procurement contract for the complete propulsion systems for four (4) new 130-auto ferries to be designed and built under a separate shipyard contract. The propulsion system for each vessel shall consist of: a propulsion control and monitoring system; data logger; propulsion diesel engines; reduction gears; hydraulic clutches; diesel engine output shafting and components; high speed shafting and components; propeller shafting and components; controllable pitch propeller system, an alarm and monitoring system and related items. The Contract shall be for four (4) identical propulsion systems (1 per vessel), per the project Technical Specifications. The Contract shall also include spare parts and special tools.

LNG: New Milestone for MAN Rollo

MAN Rollo will provide the crane vessel Werkendam with three LNG generator sets. International marine and offshore contractor Van Oord is currently building the ship at Neptune Shipyards in Hardinxveld-Giessendam. It is the first LNG powered vessel for both the yard and Van Oord. Engine supplier MAN Rollo is a pioneer when it comes to sustainable propulsion.
