Forth Ports, the UK’s third largest port group, has officially welcomed two new multimillion pound vessels to join their fleet of tugs and pilot boats working on the River Forth.The GBP 6 million investment in the two vessels to work on Scotland’s largest waterway sees the arrival of a powerful Sanmar tug and a state-of-the-art pilot boat from Holyhead Marine.The tug was built by leading ship builder Sanmar, is 28 metres long with two engines producing 2,700 brake horsepower and a bollard pull of 70 tonnes. The number of cars taken by ferry has increased from 8.6 million in 2015 to nearly 8.8 million in 2016, a 1.7% increase. This is the fourth successive year of growth according to the annual results of the ferry industry. 2016 Ferrystat figures released today by Discover Ferries, the industry body for ferry operators, reports that growth for car travel by sea is up by 473,000 in the past four years; up from just 8.3 million car crossings by sea in 2012. Discover Ferries member ferry operators include Brittany Ferries, Caledonian MacBrayne, Condor Ferries, DFDS, Irish Ferries, Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, Isles of Scilly Steamship Group, Northlink, P&O Ferries, Red Funnel, StenaLine and Wightlink.

The U.K. Coastguard is currently coordinating the search for a vessel which may be in distress and taking on water somewhere in the Newhaven area, the U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency reported. The Coastguard Rescue Helicopter from Lee on Solent, Newhaven RNLI Lifeboat and Newhaven Coastguard Rescue Team are all searching for signs of the missing vessel and are being supported by Newhaven NCI. The Coastguard has also broadcast a message requesting further information from all shipping. A tugboat owner was given an eight-month custodial sentence after his crew member died trying to reattach a tow line in a violent storm. Martin Richley, owner and skipper of 9.5m Medway tugboat Endurance, pleaded guilty to offences under the Merchant Shipping Act at a hearing today at Southampton Crown Court. Richley was charged with being the captain of a vessel put his crew at risk of serious injury/death and as the owner his operations were unsafe under sections 58 and 100 of The Merchant Shipping Act. On February 3, 2013 the Endurance began to tow 60ft motor cruiser Sirus M from the River Medway to Brighton on the south coast of England. Richley was acting as skipper on board the Endurance along with Steven Trice as the crew.

Incat announced the acquisition of its latest 367.5 ft high speed catamaran by France’s LD Lines. The largest ever fast ferry to operate on the cross channel routes between England and France will enter service between Dover and Boulogne on 29 May 2009. The new fast ferry will be the first-ever freight carrying high speed vessel to operate across the Dover Straits and LD Lines becomes the first-ever French ferry company to operate high speed ferries on the short sea routes from Dover.

With the arrival of calmer springtime weather, Titan Salvage has resumed wreck removal operations in Gibraltar on the New Flame following a busy first quarter in which the company responded to eight salvage opportunities. Among them were the re-floating of the bulk carrier Fedra's forward section in Gibraltar, the re-floating of a general cargo vessel grounded on environmentally-sensitive coral reefs of southern Belize; and the safe delivery of a tank ship involved in a collision and fire off the coast of Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Multraship salvaged a tank barge newbuilding which grounded during heavy weather while under tow from Gdynia to Nantes. The tank barge NS702 (to be named Limosa 2) was under tow from a Gdynia shipyard when it broke away from the Polish tug Ajaks during a storm and grounded on the rocky beach at Hope Point, near Newhaven, on December 7. On December 8, working under an LOF 2000 form in co-operation with URS Salvage & Maritime Contracting, Multraship mobilised the rescue tender Brandaris, the multipurpose salvage vessels Multrasalvor and Union Beaver, the tug Fighter and various salvage equipment. The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) issued the report of its investigation into the grounding of the passenger ferry Dieppe in the approach to Newhaven on December 5, 2005. The grounding occurred three months after the issuance of the MAIB report on a similar grounding of a sister vessel in the same port. The grounding occurred on an uncharted shoal in an area of known silting. The master had not been made aware of the new under keel clearance requirements. Sea Containers Ltd. has completed the sale of Newhaven Marina, West Quay and Railway Quay in Newhaven, East Sussex, England to Oakdene Homes PLC for $20.7 million (GBP11.25 million) in cash. Sea Containers will report a profit on the transaction of $10.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2005 and proceeds from the sale will be used to reduce company debt. Sea Containers has now sold almost all of its port property interests in the UK and the sale forms part of Sea Containers' ongoing strategy to focus on its core businesses.

Sea Containers has sold the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company to Montagu Private Equity Limited for $233 million, with effect on June 30, 2003. The profit on this transaction will be $100 million, however, the company has decided to establish provisions for the restructuring of its fast ferry business and to reduce the carrying value of certain assets to current market value. Total provisions will be approx. $40 million. The company also advised that its exchange offer of 13% senior notes due 2006 for July 1, 2003 matured 9.5% and 10.5% senior notes had been subscribed in the amount of $22.5 million. The balance of these senior notes ($136.6 million) has been repaid.

Crowley Maritime Corporation Chairman, President and CEO Tom Crowley Jr. announced last night at the International Salvage Union's annual dinner that Crowley has reached agreement with the owners of Titan Maritime, LLC to acquire the company. The deal is expected to close within the next 30 days. Crowley made the announcement to an audience of about 60 salvors from around the world who had gathered for dinner at the Columbia Tower Club in Seattle as part of the weeklong International Salvage Union's annual conference.
