Nigeria to Bar Unlicensed Vessels from Operating in Its Waters

Nigeria plans to bar vessels without a valid license to operate in Nigerian waters and has given shipping companies that trade in its coastal and inland waters three months to register, the maritime regulator said on Sunday.The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) said it will notify international oil companies to bar vessels without valid certificates after the three months expire.Most of the vessels that use Nigerian waters are owned by foreign companies.

ICS Readies for its Flagship Conference

The world's principal shipping organization  International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has added further high-level speakers to the line-up of its 2019 Conference: Setting Course for 2050: Powering Global Trade. NIMASA Makes IMO Representative Director

The Governing Board of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has approved the promotion of the Nigerian Alternate Permanent Representative at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Mr. Dikko Bala, to Director. Also elevated to the position of Director in the Agency was the Deputy Director, Maritime Labor Services, Mrs. Rita Uruakpa.Other beneficiaries of the promotion exercise were Mr Kazir Musa, who was promoted to Deputy Director, and 18 officers, who were elevated to Assistant Directors.

Nigeria: No More Vessel Waivers

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) on Sunday said it had commenced clampdown on vessels that do not comply with the provisions of the Cabotage Compliance Strategy introduced last year to ease the implementation of the Cabotage Act 2003 in Nigeria.The Director-General of NIMASA, Dr Dakuku Peterside, said in a statement on Sunday in Lagos that the clampdown became necessary after several warnings.He has said the Agency will no longer encourage the application of any form of waivers under the Cabotage Act, particularly from the oil firms operations as such does not help the growth of the Nigerian maritime sector and economy at large.“Our laws forbid foreign vessels operating in our territorial waters save for compliance with the Cabotage Act.

Unfair Reporting on Piracy, Says Nigeria

Nigeria to Automate Shipping Processes

The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to automate all shipping related administrative processes in order to reduce subjectivity and corruption, thereby promoting transparency in the Nigerian maritime industry. This comes as a result of Nigeria's quest to ensure the growth and development of the maritime sector and in line with the Presidential order on the Ease of Doing Business in Nigeria. NIMASA Set to Acquire More Fast Intervention Vessels

In line with the recent approval by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA is set to acquire strategic maritime safety and security assets, which are also in line with the total spectrum of maritime security strategy. The Federal Executive Council of Nigeria approved the Suppression of Piracy and Maritime Offences Bill, reported TVC News.
