Japan Trio Begins Work on an Ammonia-Fueled Tugboat

As the marine industry works to find the ‘fuel of the future’ to address increasingly stringent emission regulations, an interesting development from a trio of marine powers in Japan seeks to develop the world’s first ammonia-fueled tugboat. NYK Gets Japan's First LNG-Fuelled Tug

NYK Line has taken delivery of Japan’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled tugboat from Keihin Dock. "The new tug, named Sakigake, was delivered by Keihin Dock Co. Ltd and is expected confirm the viability of LNG as a marine fuel and to help cultivate a new business field in the area of LNG as an environment-friendly marine fuel,” says NYK. Sakigake has been chartered to Wing Maritime Service Corporation from NYK, and will be operated mainly at the ports of Yokohama and Kawasaki. This vessel is the second environment-friendly tugboat operated by Wing Maritime Service Corporation, following the delivery of Tsubasa in March 2013. The new tug is equipped with dual-fuel engines that can use either of LNG and diesel oil, depending on conditions.

ClassNK Approves Niigata’s Dual-fuel Engine

ClassNK granted type approval to the new 28AHX-DF dual-fuel engine built by Niigata Power Systems Co., Ltd. Whilst the adoption of emerging maritime technologies can prove challenging due in part to the time required to gain approval, ClassNK’s streamlined approval process has allowed it to complete the design approval, trial operational testing, and the overhaul inspection of the 28AHX-DF in just a couple of months before granting type approval on December 24. General Manager of ClassNK’s Machinery Department Yukihisa Shibata said, “At ClassNK we aim to promote the use of innovative technologies for the benefit of the greater maritime industry.

ClassNK Approves Niigata Dual-fuel Engine Design

Classification society ClassNK has granted approval to the design of the new 28AHX-DF dual-fuel engine developed by Niigata Power Systems Co., Ltd. The new engine is slated to be used as the main engine on a new LNG-fuelled tugboat being built by Keihin Dock Co., Ltd. for NYK Line. The vessel will be Japan’s first LNG fuelled vessel, excluding LNG carriers. New regulations for Emission Control Areas (ECA), including new stricter limits on sulfur emissions as well as the IMO’s Tier III NOx emission limits, are driving demand for new engine and emission control technologies.

RS at SEA JAPAN 2014

Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) was the only Russian company to take part in SEA JAPAN 2014 exhibition and conference – one of the major exhibitions of the maritime industry. The event which brought together the leading industry representatives of the world took place between 9 to 11 April 2014 at the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition centre in Tokyo, Japan. The participants of the exhibition were 489 companies from 27 countries of the world. The special focus of the exhibition were the advanced global environment protection technologies including the development of diesel engines with low pollutant emission to the atmosphere, hi-tech energy saving devices and technologies such as air lubrication systems for ship hulls, solar batteries for ships and ecologically clean coatings.

CIMAC World Congress May 2013

The CIMAC World Congress on Combustion Engine Technology for Ship Propulsion, Power Generation and Rail Traction was held from May 13-16 in Shanghai. The Technical Program of this CIMAC Congress reflected a host of current hot topics, such as CO2 reduction or emissions. It consisted of 193 paper presentations, flanked by 68 poster presentations, from 20 countries – with strong participation from China. The huge amount of technical contributions was based on more than 400 abstracts which have been submitted to CIMAC in preparation of the congress, more than ever before.

Teijin SCR Helps Ships Cut NOx Emissions

Teijin Engineering Ltd. announced  its development and launch of a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) denitration device for midsized ship engines to ensure compliance with the Tier III NOx (nitrogen oxides) Emissions Regulation that is slated to be enforced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) beginning in 2016. Teijin Engineering will initially supply the device on an OEM basis in June to Niigata Power Systems Co., Ltd., an engine manufacturer and the codeveloper of the product. CIMAC Circle at Marintec Shanghai

CIMAC, the International Council for Combustion Engines took advantage of this year’ s major trade show in the large engine sector to stage the latest in its CIMAC Circle series of forums for information exchange. Chaired by CIMAC board member Yasuhiro Itoh, Managing Director, Niigata Power Systems Co., Ltd., the Circle was entitled “Life-Cycle Costs - the Impact of Fuel and Emissions,” and with contributions from a full spectrum of stakeholders gave a timely and comprehensive snapshot of present and predicted costs of engine ownership in the light of tightening marine emissions legislation.
