Port of Long Beach Welcomes ONE

For three Japanese ocean carriers combining their shipping container business into ONE, the future is bright and it comes in magenta. The future arrives this April. ONE stands for Ocean Network Express, a joint venture of “K” Line, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and NYK Line that consolidates the three companies’ container shipping units into a single, integrated company. ONE chose the vibrant mix of purple and red to convey the energy and excitement of the new business model with a color that pops amid the muted blue and brown containers crossing the docks. “We’re very excited. We have this moment to combine the best practices of our former companies with new technologies to support our customers,” said Maria Bodnar, Senior Director of Beneficial Cargo Owner Sales for ONE North America Inc.

Long Beach Port Leads Way to Clear Backlog of Containers Due to Hanjin Bankruptcy

The Port of Long Beach is helping to clear a significant backlog of empty cargo containers from Southern California and free up the chassis they sit on, as part of an agreement with terminal operator Total Terminals International (TTI) to bring in a container ship to remove up to 4,300 empty containers. The bankruptcy of Hanjin Shipping declared on Aug. 31 resulted in a significant buildup of empty containers across Southern California, tying up the chassis they rest on. “The Port of Long Beach recognized the urgency to alleviate the shortage created by the estimated 6,000 Hanjin-leased containers sitting on chassis which are needed throughout Southern California to move goods in and out of the region,” said Lori Ann Guzmán, President of the Board of Harbor Commissioners.

Port of Long Beach Mulls ‘Flexible Free Time’

Port of Long Beach officials will consider reducing the amount of time import containers can be stored on docks without charge, hoping the change would increase velocity of cargo moving out of the port. Since 2005, the length of time containers can stay on the dock, called “free time,” has been four days. Beyond that, terminals are charged storage fees. Now with larger vessels regularly calling on the port, terminals are seeing more containers, inhibiting workers’ ability to deliver containers quickly and efficiently.

Congestion at Long Beach Port being Eased

As a result of the Port of Long Beach’s congestion relief efforts, two truck chassis owners, DCLI and TRAC, are adding over 3,000 chassis to their local fleet over the next few weeks to match supply and demand. "We need to increase the utilization of the more than 100,000 chassis in the San Pedro Bay port complex,” said Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners Vice President Rich Dines. “Mega container ships with 10,000-plus total moves per call have added pressure on our chassis pools and far too many chassis sit idle on a daily basis. Dines is chairing a key Board subcommittee charged with improving Port efficiency. In addition to chassis-related issues…
