Norfolk Dredging Wins Contract
Norfolk Dredging Co., Chesapeake, Va., was awarded on Aug. 26, 2004, a $2,500,000 increment as part of a $9,600,259 firm-fixed-price contract for maintenance and new work dredging inbound and outbound elements of Norfolk Harbor Channel and new work dredging of the South Terminal at Norfolk International Terminals. Work will be performed in Hampton Roads, Va., and is expected to be completed by July 1, 2005.

Norfolk Dredging Awarded U.S. ACE Delaware River Contract
The US Department of Defense informs that Norfolk Dredging Co., Chesapeake, Virginia, was awarded an $11,787,279 firm-fixed-price contract for maintenance dredging of the inland waterway Delaware River to Chesapeake Bay, Delaware and Maryland. Work will be performed in Maryland with an estimated completion date of Feb. 10, 2015. Fiscal 2014 operations and maintenance (Army) funds in the amount of $11,787,279 are being obligated at award. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Philadelphia District, Pennsylvania is the contracting activity (W912BU-14-C-0033).
Dredge Vessel Exception Interpreted
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled that a U.S.-documented non-hopper dredge vessel chartered by a company in which Stuyvesant Dredging Company (SDC) has an interest may be used to perform work under a dredging contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In the instant case, a rival dredge company filed a bid protest after the contract was awarded to a company in which SDC has an ownership interest. The protestor asserted that the SDC statutory exception only applied with regard to non-hopper dredges in existence on the date the statutory exception was enacted and may only be utilized in support of hopper dredges.
Coast Guard Saves Foundering Barge
The Coast Guard helped save a sinking barge today on the Elizabeth River near the south end of Naval Station Norfolk. The 20-person crew of the dredging barge Pullen, a 150-ft. barge owned by the Norfolk Dredging Company, saw the Coast Guard Cutter Block Island underway and called for help at 10:30 a.m. The crew had a malfunction in their dredging gear that began flooding their bargeÃ¢Â€Â™s forward hold at a rate of approximately 400 gallons a minute. The Block Island responded with several dewatering pumps. With the water Pullenâ€™s forward hold reaching eight feet deep, rescue coordinators at Group Hampton Roads diverted a Coast Guard helicopter in the area to drop an additional pump to the foundering barge.
Norfolk Dredging Shifts to Deepwater Point Range
Dredging operations have been completed in New Castle Range and all submerged pipeline has been removed, GAC said in a alert. Anchorage No.3 and No.5 are reopened for anchorage purposes. At this time, Norfolk Dredging is conducting dredging operations at Deepwater Point Range, scheduled to continue through mid-May, 2014. The Dredge ESSEX is operating in Deepwater Point Range, working from south to north, starting on the east side of the channel in the vicinity of the western point of the Killcohook National Wildlife Refuge. GAC said mariners are cautioned to remain a safe distance away from the dredge, buoys, cables, pipeline, barges, derricks, wires and related equipment. Submerged pipeline is placed parallel to the channel on the New Jersey side of the river.
DoD Award Dredging, Ship Maintenance, Charter Contracts
US Department of Defense informs of placement of contracts for Chesapeake Bay dredging, dry-docking of USS Pearl Harbor, and charter of surface escort vessels. Norfolk Dredging Company, Chesapeake, Virginia, has been awarded $18,784,248 for a dredging requirement for Baltimore harbor and channels. Maintenance dredging will take place in various channel sections in the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland. Two dredging and dredging related contracts are among the latest awarded by the Department of Defense, Navy, for the contracting authority, the Army Corps of Engineers. Norfolk Dredging Co., Chesapeake, Va., was awarded a firm-fixed-price contract with a maximum value of $8,400,000 for dredging and disposal services along the Delaware River. Work will be performed in Philadelphia, Pa., Salem, N.J., and New Castle, Del. Fiscal 2013 operations and maintenance funds in the amount of $7,500,000 are being obligated on this award. Royal IHC Launches TSHD Newbuild
A new multipurpose 5,450m3 trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) was officially named and launched during a ceremony on January 11 at Royal IHC’s shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel, The Netherlands. The dredger, named DC Orisant, is being built for a joint venture between Den Herder (Reimerswaal Dredging) and Group de Cloedt and is slated for delivery in mid-2018 for work in the dredging and offshore wind markets. “The DC Orisant is a TSHD with full system redundancy and can perform a wide range of projects.
Salvage Plan Considered For Elk River Tug
The Coast Guard, in conjunction with the Army Corps of Engineers and the Navy's Supervisor of Salvage, is reviewing a plan submitted by the owners and contracted salvors of a sunken tug and a barge impeding vessel traffic in the Elk River in the Upper Chesapeake Bay. The tug and barge, which sank in the shipping channel following a collision with a freighter, have caused the adjacent C&D Canal to remain closed to all vessel traffic pending their safe removal. Four men remain missing following the incident. The salvage plan, submitted by Norfolk Dredging Marine, the sunken tug Swift's owners, and Ellsworth Salvage, the contractor, must adequately address a number of safety, environmental, and navigational considerations in order to receive the agencies' authorization to begin operations.
Adani Adds Two New Dredgers to Its Fleet
India’s largest private multi-port operator Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) inaugurated two new 8,000m3 trailing suction hopper dredgers (TSHDs) on January 8. Both dredgers were built by Royal IHC in The Netherlands and recently arrived at Adani’s Hazira Port in Gujarat, India, after their maiden voyage through the Suez Canal. Tug Newbuild Delivered to De Boer
On January 9, Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld delivered an ASD Tug 2310 SD (shallow draught), named Papillon, to De Boer Remorquage SARL, a subsidiary company of Dutch Dredging (Baggerbedrijf De Boer) and Iskes Towage & Salvage. Damen has customized the ASD for a 12-year contract with Grand Port Maritime de Guyane in the ports of Cayenne and Kourou in French Guiana. The tug’s primary function will be the assistance of vessels entering and leaving the ports. She can also provide emergency assistance, such as fire-fighting, survey activities and small transports.
GLDD, BAE, Awarded DoD Contracts
U.S. Department of Defense informs that a New York Harbor dredging contract has been awarded to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company (GLDD) and a Navy USS Jacinto drydocking contract to BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair. Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company, LLC, Oak Brook, Illinois, was awarded a $17,027,415 modification (P00003) to contract W912DS-13-C-0045 for dredging shoaled material. Work will be performed in New York harbor along Newark Bay Port Elizabeth Channel, Newark Bay north and south areas, and along Kill Van Kull in the vicinity of Constable Hook and Anchorage Channel.
Vessel Collides in Upper Bay
The Coast Guard, along with state and local rescue teams, is searching for survivors after an apparent collision involving three vessels that occurred in the Elk River, off the Chesapeake Bay in northern Maryland, early this morning. The vessels A/V Kastner, Buchanan 14, and Swift, were involved in an apparent collision on Monday morning. The tugboat Swift apparently sank while the A/V Kastner and tug Buchanan reportedly went aground. Rescue crews transported two injured crewmembers to Union Hospital in Cecil County, Md., and one injured crewmember was flown to the Shock and Trauma Center in Baltimore. The extent of the injuries is unknown. Two others apparently made it to shore in good condition.
Public Meetings to be held on Norfolk Channel Deepening Project
The US Navy published a notice stating that it intends to prepare an environmental impact statement for proposed dredging of the Norfolk Harbor Channel in the Elizabeth River. The dredging is necessary to provide the service’s aircraft carriers with safe and unrestricted access. Upcoming Maritime Recruitment Fair at CMTI
Chesapeake Marine Training Institute (CMTI) says that Norfolk Tug will be among the maritime companies recruiting new talent at its professional mariner job fair August 13, 2014, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the CMTI campus in Hayes, Va. CMTI adds that Vane Brothers will also be on hand recruiting professional mariners. Founded in 1998, Norfolk Tug is part of the American Waterways Operators and operates a fleet of 10 vessels. With tugs ranging in size from 66 to 100 feet, Norfolk Tug operates in ocean, coastal, near coastal, inland, bay and bay tributary waterways.
Weeks Marine Takes Delivery of Hopper Dredge Magdalen
Weeks Marine’s new self-propelled hopper dredge, Magdalen, was delivered by Eastern Shipbuilding on December 22 following sea trials and regulatory inspections. The newbuild is one of the two newest, and among the largest hopper dredges in the U.S., and will bring formidable pumping power to offload beach quality sand or other materials for land reclamation. On December 28, the new dredger sailed from Eastern's Allanton facility in Panama City, Fla. on her maiden voyage to the East Coast.

Dutra Dredging Company, Calif. was awarded a $19,869,500 firm-fixed-price contract for dredging in the Thimble Shoal Federal Navigation Channel and the Cape Henry Federal Navigation Channel, Norfolk Virginia. Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk, Va., is the contracting activity. Austal USA LLC, Mobile, Ala., was awarded an $8,247,342 modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-11-C-2301) on Nov. 27, 2013, to exercise an option for littoral combat ship (LCS) core class services. The company will assess engineering and production challenges as well as evaluate the cost and schedule risks from affordability efforts to reduce LCS acquisition and lifecycle costs. Work will be performed in Mobile, Ala. (60 percent), and Pittsfield, Mass.
New Navy Contract
Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, LLC, Oak Brook, Ill., is being awarded a $9,584,080 firm-fixed price contract for dredging services at the Naval Submarine Base New London. The work to be performed provides for dredging services for pier side slips along the waterfront quay wall. Work will be performed in Groton, Conn., and is expected to be completed by Feb. 2010. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract was competitively procured via the Navy Electronic Commerce Online website, with two proposals received. The Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Mid-Atlantic, Norfolk, Va., is the contracting activity (N40085-09-C-7046).
Norfolk Harbor Channel Dredging
The Navy announced on September 8 its decision to deepen approximately five miles of the Norfolk Harbor Channel in the Elizabeth River. This action will allow the continuous safe and expeditious travel of aircraft carriers to and from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) and the Lamberts Point Deperming Station. Dredging this heavily-used waterway, which is the federal navigation channel within the Elizabeth River in Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Chesapeake, would occur from the Lamberts Point Deperming Station in the Lamberts Bend Reach, south to NNSY in the Lower Reach. Dredging would occur completely within the existing Army Corps of Engineers-maintained federal navigation channel.
BAE Commences Construction of Hopper Drdge
BAE Systems Cuts Steel, Begins Construction on Trailing Suction Hopper Dredge. BAE Systems has begun construction on the MV Magdalen, an 8,500 cubic yard capacity trailing suction hopper dredge for Weeks Marine, Inc. Executives from the two companies gathered this week at the BAE Systems Mobile shipyard to oversee the initial cutting of steel for the vessel’s first module, which will weigh 130 tons. When complete in 2014, the entire vessel will measure 340 feet long and 79 feet wide, with a draft of 27 feet.
