Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) emerged as a major force in environmental stewardship judging by its impressive showing during a recent series of environmental awards. NAVSEA and its various activities were very well represented on April 30 and May 1 at a series of environmental awards presentation ceremonies on behalf of the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) and the Department of Defense (OSD). Northrop Grumman Corporation today said that the U.S. Navy has awarded the company a $191 million contract for an Extended Drydock Selected Restricted Availability (EDSRA) on the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65). Electric Boat Awarded Sub Support Work at NNS
The U.S. Navy has awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat $10 million to support submarine maintenance and modernization work on USS Charlotte and USS Georgia at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Virginia. Electric Boat is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics. An Electric Boat team of 56 trades people and supervisors will work with the Navy on a depot modernization period (DMP) for USS Charlotte and an engineered refueling overhaul (ERO) for USS Georgia, prior to its conversion to a guided-missile and special-operations support ship. That conversion will be performed by Electric Boat.
GD Wins $17m to Support Nuclear Aircraft Carrier Repair Work
The U.S. Navy has awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat a $16.6 million contract to support nuclear aircraft carrier repair work at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Va. Electric Boat is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD).U nder the terms of the contract, Electric Boat will provide about 100 skilled trades workers to perform maintenance and repair work on USS Truman (CVN-75) and USS George W. Bush (CVN-77). Six NAVSEA Commands Designated as CITEs
The Secretary of the Navy recently designated 13 Navy and Marine Corps depot maintenance activities, including six Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) field activities, as Centers of Industrial and Technical Excellence (CITEs). As CITEs, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine; Norfolk Naval Shipyard; Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Washington; Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility; Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Keyport Wash.; and Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane, Ind., have SECNAV-delegated authority to enter into public-private partnerships to perform work related to their depot maintenance core competencies.
NASSCO-Norfolk Wins CVN Maintenance Work
General Dynamics NASSCO–Norfolk said it was awarded the Mid-Atlantic CVN private sector maintenance contract by the U.S. Navy to perform non-nuclear planning and maintenance work during six Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) availabilities on four Nimitz-class aircraft carriers and one Gerald R. Ford-class carrier, home-ported in or visiting Norfolk, Va. The five-year cost-plus-award-fee and incentive fee contract also includes the ability to provide for any continuing or emergent maintenance repairs on any of these East Coast aircraft carriers.
USS Wasp Undocks Ahead of Schedule

USS George Washington Gets Underway for Sea Trials
USS George Washington (GW) (CVN 73) left Norfolk Naval Shipyard on Aug. 27 and headed for sea trials. Sea trials, which are expected to be completed later this week, are traditionally the final hurdle for a shipyard maintenance availability and are designed to assess GW’s material readiness and ability to rejoin the fleet as a fully operational unit. Once complete, GW will return to the U.S. 2nd Fleet to commence final operational preparations to relieve USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) as the Navy’s forward-deployed aircraft carrier in Japan in 2008. Alaska Scheduled to Change Homeports
USS Alaska (SSBN 732), a fleet ballistic submarine assigned to Submarine Group 10, is scheduled to change homeports to Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Ga. Alaska was previously assigned to Submarine Group 9 in Bangor, Wash., for 20 years and has been undergoing a 26 month refueling overhaul at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Ballistic missile submarines conduct a major overhaul near the mid-point of the submarine's service life, approximately 20 years, to re-capitalize the vessel and extend the useful life to maintain the required SSBN force level. Alaska has completed sea trials and is scheduled to arrive at Kings Bay for the first time in April. Cmdr. Paul Haebler is the commanding officer of Alaska's single crew. Electric Boat Wins Navy Order
Electric Boat Corp., Groton, Conn., is being awarded a $16,620,037 cost-plus-fixed fee order under previously awarded basic ordering agreement (N00024-10-G-4314) to support nuclear carrier repair work at Norfolk Naval Shipyard during on-going availabilities. This contract is for skilled tradesmen support to two chief of naval operations carrier maintenance availabilities. Scheduled to undergo repairs include USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) and USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77). Work will be performed in Norfolk, Va., and is scheduled to be completed by July 2012. Contract funds in the amount of $16,620,037 will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair, Groton, Conn., is the contracting activity.
Bataan Leaves Dry Dock, Moors Pierside

US Aircraft Carrier 'Ike' Leaves Drydock
The aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (Ike) has left dry dock and moved from Dry Dock 8 to pier 42/43 at Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) in Portsmouth, Va. informs USN. USS Dwight D.
