NORSHIPCO Weathers the Economic Storm

A down economy, a disabled drydock and a nation under heightened security measures — not exactly the best position for a ship repair facility to be in — or so one would think. Norfolk Shipbuilding & Drydock Corporation (NORSHIPCO) however has managed to stay on top with its steady stream of government and commercial work coming in into its yard. With 70 percent of NORSHIPCO's work on the government side, the yard has still had a steady stream of commercial work. According to Krekich, the work that was performed on MSC ship M/V SSG Edward A. Carter was successful in terms of schedule, costs and customer satisfaction. The 950-ft. (289.5 m) vessel, which arrived at NORSHIPCO on March 1, 2001, is under a long-term charter to MSC.

Norshipco Wins $22M USS Bataan Contract

Norfolk Shipbuilding and Drydock Corp., Norfolk, Va., is being awarded a $21,975,514 fixed-price contract for the drydocking phased maintenance availability of the USS Bataan (LHD-5). Work involves miscellaneous repairs, including drydocking. Work will be performed in Norfolk, Va., and is expected to be completed by October 2004. Contract funds will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract was competitively procured and advertised via the Internet, with three proposals solicited and three offers received. NSRC Launch Third Online Installment of Campaign

The National Ship Repair Coalition (NSRC) launched its third multi-media presentation to support the “What Have You Done for the Fleet Today?” campaign. Contracts

The U.S. Navy awarded the work package on its USS Whidbey Island to Norshipco, a member of the U.S. Marine Repair shipyard family. The contract, which calls for topside phased maintenance, fixed-price availability, states for work to commence on May 24 for a September 1 completion. The work package includes topside repairs, electrical and mechanical repairs, and ship alterations. Specific mechanical repairs entail main propulsion diesel engines, and ship alterations include the RAM Mk31 Mod and Ship's Self Defense System installations. Stratos has been awarded a contract to supply C-band satellite equipment and teleport services for PanCanadian Petroleum Limited's exploration drilling program offshore Nova Scotia.

Norshipco And Metro Machine Team Up

Norshipco and Metro Machine have agreed to a teaming arrangement - further enabling the two companies to raise the level of services provided to the U.S. Navy. The partnership between Norshipco and Metro provides the Navy with the private sector capability and capacity in the Norfolk, Va. homeport to undertake large complex repair jobs, while concurrently performing other scheduled Navy repair work. Kearsarge Returns to NNSY

Following a back-to-basics approach in performing ship repairs, Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) returned another amphibious-class ship to the fleet within budget and ahead of schedule, as the result of a public-private ship repair partnership in the Hampton Roads area. The shipyard completed a planned maintenance availability (PMA) for the Wasp-class, amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) ten days ahead of schedule and within fixed price budget, according to Project Superintendent Bobby Watkins. Navy Awards Multi Ship/Multi Option Contract

The Navy awarded the East Coast Multi/Ship Multi Option (MS/MO) contract on Dec. 20 to Norfolk Shipbuilding and Drydock Corporation (NORSHIPCO) for DDG docking maintenance availabilities along with their associated non-docking availabilities. The contract is a Cost Plus Award Fee contract type with hull specific maintenance availabilities, as well as Inter-availability Maintenance. United Defense's Norfolk Shipyard Wins Ship Repair Contract

United Defense Industries, Inc. announced today the U.S. Navy's contract award to the Norfolk, Va., shipyard, NORSHIPCO, for the topside phased-maintenance, fixed-price availability work on the dock landing amphibious-class ship USS WHIDBEY ISLAND (LSD-41), the lead ship in its class home-ported in Norfolk. NORSHIPCO is a member of United States Marine Repair, Inc. (USMR), a subsidiary of United Defense. The basic award of the contract is valued at $12.2 million and with funded options, the total contract value would be in excess of $14 million. The ship is scheduled to arrive at NORSHIPCO on September 9, 2002. Work is expected to be completed on February 10, 2003. NORSHIPCO performed a similar availability on the WHIDBEY ISLAND in 1999.

NORSHIPCO Receives Award

United Defense Industries, Inc. announced the receipt of one of the U.S. Navy’s most prestigious awards, the Theater Surface Combatants Award for Excellence, at its shipyard in Norfolk, Va. The award, formerly titled the AEGIS Excellence Award, was presented to NORSHIPCO, a member of the United States Marine Repair (USMR) family of shipyards, during a ceremony at the yard in August. Rear Adm. William J. Cobb, Jr. presented the award to Tom Epley, NORSHIPCO’s president and general manager, before a room filled with representatives from the Supervisor of Shipbuilding in Portsmouth, Va., Navy officials and shipyard workers. USMR, recently acquired by United Defense, now holds a total of four of these most coveted awards.

United Defense Wins Contracts

United Defense, Industries, Inc announced today the award to NORSHIPCO a division of United States Marine Repair of 2 multi-year, multi-ship, cost plus contracts by the U.S. Navy’s Supervisor of Shipbuilding and Repair (SUPSHIP), Portsmouth worth nearly $90 million if all options are exercised. The largest contract, for six LSD-41 and 48 class ships, puts the entire LSD fleet of this ship type on East and West coasts under maintenance contracts with United States Marine Repair, a subsidiary of United Defense. The Advance Planning award totals $52,610. The combined total contract award, if the Navy exercises all options, is approximately $64 million.

NORSHIPCO Wins Second Kennedy Contract Worth Over $21M

United Defense Industries, Inc. announced today a $21,694,925 award to its subsidiary, NORSHIPCO, by the Supervisor of Shipbuilding and Repair, Jacksonville, Fla., for the firm fixed-price Extended Selective Restricted Availability (EDSRA) on the Navy's aircraft carrier, USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV-67). NORSHIPCO previously won a $10 million contract in November for work on the KENNEDY. The work is scheduled to begin in January 2003 and to be completed by September 2003 at the Naval Station Mayport, Fla., the ship's home port. The work package focuses on work in two of the four engine rooms and includes main machinery room repairs consisting of tanks, boilers, forced draft blowers, steam valves, reduction gears, main feed pumps, main condenser, lube oil pumps, and piping.

Hanson Retires from San Francisco DryDock

Carl Hanson, president and general manager of San Francisco Drydock (SFD), one of seven United States Marine Repair (USMR)ship repair facilities , including Southwest Marine (SWM) and NORSHIPCO on the East Coast, has retired. He had been with the company since 1978. Due to his extensive shipyard knowledge and experience, he will remain involved with the company on a case-by-case consulting basis. Hanson's shipyard career began in San Diego, Calif., at Triple A South ship repair facility, where he gained hands-on knowledge as a ship superintendent. When SWM opened a facility in San Francisco in 1978, Hanson left Triple A and moved north to help with the start-up.

On-Site Mechanic

For scheduled maintenance and repairs, Industrial Lift has one of their mechanics on site at Hampton Roads for one shift per day. The cost for the mechanic during that time is paid by Industrial Lift as part of the contract. However, the cost of repairs made at times other than "normal business hours" is the responsibility of Norshipco. Joe Carr, United Rentals' mechanic, shepherds the Snorkel telescoping booms and is one of the reasons the contract is working so well. Carr is an experienced construction equipment mechanic. He works a standard eight-hour day shift at Hampton Roads; and along with four other mechanics, shares off-hour duty on a rotational basis. Norshipco uses the Snorkel booms three shifts a day, so in preventive maintenance alone there is plenty for Carr to do.
