Corvus Batteries for Five New All-Electric Ferries in Amsterdam

Corvus Energy will deliver lithium-ion battery-based energy storage systems (ESS) from for five new all-electric ferries being built for Amsterdam’s municipal public transport provider, GVB, that will replace the current fleet built in 1930s.The order for the Corvus Energy ESS has been placed by Holland Ship Electric. The ferries, that are being built by Holland Shipyard Group, will operate on three of the North Sea Canal routes, replacing the current fleet built in the 1930s.

AYOP Appoints New Director

Amsterdam IJmuiden Offshore Ports (AYOP), a networking organization, has appointed Sylvia Boer as director effective from 1 February 2020. In this new position within the association for offshore companies in the North Sea Canal Area, Boer acts as a link between the members, government and stakeholders.AYOP sees great opportunities for the offshore wind, but certainly also for oil & gas, in the region and wants to take full advantage of this with the arrival of Boer.Boer has been working for Damen Shipyards Group over the past eight years, the last three of which as head of communications.Prior to this she spent five years as export manager and policy employee with trade association Scheepsbouw Nederland (now Netherlands Martine Technology).

Amsterdam Port Transhipment Up 12%

Transhipment in the North Sea Canal Area of the seaports of Amsterdam, IJmuiden, Beverwijk and Zaanstad rose in the first half of 2019 to 54.1 million tonnes, an increase of 7%.According to the Netherlands seaport, this was the result of an increase in transhipment in the first six months of this year in the port of Amsterdam by 12.3% to 45.4 million tonnes – another record.In IJmuiden, transhipment fell by 12.3% to 8.5 million tonnes, Beverwijk recorded a 23% increase to 349,000 tonnes and in Zaanstad transhipment fell by 13.2% to 72,000 tonnes.The increase in Amsterdam in the first half of the year was caused by both liquid and dry bulk and containers. Liquid bulk transhipment rose by 10.6% to 25.9 million tonnes.

Amsterdam Port Post Record Profit

Port of Amsterdam realised net profit of EUR 68.5 million in 2018, which represents a 12.5% increase compared to 2017 (net profit of EUR 60.9 million).Revenue rose slightly in 2018, rising 5 percent to EUR 157.4 million, primarily due to a record amount of land allocations totalling 45.1 hectares (2017: 18 hectares) and an increase in harbour dues owing to a record level of transhipment totalling 82.3 million tonnes of cargo (2017: 81.3 million tonnes).The annual figures show a financially healthy position for Port of Amsterdam, which is benefitting from the favourable economic climate. SHIP Intros Innovations

Sluis Haven Informatie Punt (SHIP), the information center is located on the lock complex right next to the construction site of the new sea lock in the North Sea Canal Area of IJmuiden, Netherlands, has introduced innovations over the past few months.Shipping company Jumelet has been granted a permit to use the mooring jetty near SHIP and will soon start a regular service from IJmuiden to SHIP and vice versa.Furthermore, Technolab, especially intended for young learners in primary education, has been expanded with new technology workshops. For art lovers, there is a new exhibition showing pen drawings and paintings by Thijs Zwart.Shipping company Jumelet has received a permit from Rijkswaterstaat to use the mooring jetty at SHIP. The permit has been issued for a period of five years.

Port of Amsterdam has launched a Cybersecurity Programme to increase the port community's digital resilience.A press release from the port has explained the rationale behind the launch: "The Netherlands is one of the world's top three countries affected by cyber attacks. Record Transshipment at Port of Amsterdam in 2018

Port of Amsterdam achieved a new transhipment record in 2018 with transhipment totalling 82.3 million tonnes, compared to 81.3 million tonnes in the previous year.Together with the other ports in the North Sea Canal Area, total transhipment consequently amounted to 101.8 million tonnes in 2018, said a press release from the 4th busiest port in Europe by metric tonnes of cargo.This is revealed in the provisional transhipment figures announced today. New Sea Lock at IJmuiden

To accommodate increasingly larger ships, a new sea lock is being built at IJmuiden, a port city in the Dutch province of North Holland.The construction started in 2016. It will be the largest sea lock in the world. The sea lock ensures that ships can access the ports and port businesses along the North Sea Canal in a safe and efficient way, irrespective of the tide.The new sea lock will be 500 metres long, 70 metres wide and 18 metres deep. Port of Amsterdam to Build Europe’s Biggest Hydrogen Cluster

Nouryon (formerly AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals), Tata Steel and the Port of Amsterdam have joined together to study the feasibility of a large green hydrogen cluster in the Amsterdam region.According to a press release, the three parties consider green hydrogen as vital for reaching climate targets and building a more circular economy, for example by combining it with emissions from steel manufacture to make new products.As a first step, the parties will study the feasibility of a 100 megawatt water electrolysis facility to produce up to 15,000 tons of hydrogen per year as well as oxygen at Tata Steel’s IJmuiden site, near Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Port Transhipment Down 4.8% in 1H 2018

Transhipment in the North Sea Canal Area at the seaports Amsterdam, IJmuiden, Beverwijk and Zaanstad declined to 49.4 million tonnes in the first half of 2018, a decrease of 5.1%. The Port of Amsterdam saw transhipment fall by 4.8% to 40.2 million tonnes.In IJmuiden, transhipment declined to 9.3 million tonnes (-4.4%), Beverwijk registered a decline to 282,000 tonnes (-18.6%) and in Zaanstad transhipment fell to 84,000 tonnes (-59.3%).The decline in Amsterdam in the first half of the year was due to two cargo flows: coal and oil products. Transhipment of coal was down 25.5% in the first six months of 2018 to 6.4 million tonnes. Transhipment of oil products also declined by 6.7% to 22.1 million tonnes.

Port of Amsterdam: Adjustment Lock Passage Regime in IJmuiden

Because of the ongoing period of drought, and on the advice of the National Water Coordination Committee, the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management has switched to the so called KWA scenario (‘Klimaatbestendige Wateraanvoer’).One of the decisions made is that it is necessary to adjust the lock passage regime in IJmuiden to reduce saltwater intrusion from the North Sea Canal into the Amsterdam Rhine Canal.Therefore Port of Amsterdam will start the optimisation of the passage process, from Thursday 26 July 2018 at 06.00 pm. HoogTij to Build Deep-sea Quay

The construction of a 900-metre-deep deep-sea quay near the HoogTij business park along the North Sea Canal is set to begin this summer. HoogTij is divided into two parts: a site reserved for port-related companies (the maritime section) and a site intended for land-based companies (the land section). The total area can accommodate 130 hectares of business activity. HoogTij is a project initiated by the Municipality of Zaanstad, Port of Amsterdam and Ontwikkelingsbedrijf Haventerrein Westzaan (the Haventerrein Westzaan Development Company). The port-related site is being developed by Port of Amsterdam. In late October 2017, Container Terminal CTVrede Steinweg and logistics services provider Gam BAKKER decided to relocate to the HoogTij business park section of the port area.

Delay in Opening of World’s Largest Sea Lock

The new sea lock, which will be the world’s largest, will be opened later than initially planned. Dutch Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management, Cora van Nieuwenhuizen, informed the Dutch House of Representatives of the modified schedule for the completion of the lock near IJmuiden yesterday (July 03). The sea lock will be completed 27 months later. The date will consequently be moved to no later than the end of January 2022. The delay will not have any consequences for shipping traffic to and from the ports of the North Sea Canal because the existing Noordersluis lock will now remain operational longer. This does, however, mean that larger ships than is currently the case will not be able to call at our port.

Amsterdam Port Revenue Grows in 2017

Havenbedrijf Amsterdam N.V. realised revenue of EUR 150.1 million, compared to EUR 146.3 million in 2016. The operating result increased from EUR 73.3 million in 2016 to EUR 74.3 million in 2017. These and other key figures are stated in the annual report published. Koen Overtoom, CEO of Port of Amsterdam: "Record transshipment of 81.3 million tonnes in 2017 contributed to our good operating result of more than 74 million euros. 2017 also saw the arrival of a number of fantastic businesses in the Port, such as Bio Energy Netherlands and Chaincraft, which are contributing to the achievement of our strategy and Vision2030. We have also expressed an ambition to prepare for being a coal-free port in 2030.

New Samskip Container Service for Amsterdam

A new short-sea container service between Amsterdam and Hull has been formally inaugurated with the first call of the 340-TEU vessel THEA II at Amsterdam Container Terminal (ACT). The new service, operated by leading short sea container operator Samskip, offers three sailings a week on this new route with vessels departing from Amsterdam on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Commenting on the new service, Clemence Cheng, Managing Director of Hutchison Ports Europe, said: “Amsterdam Container Terminal offers shipping lines the opportunity to serve their customers in a fast, efficient, reliable and sustainable manner. ACT is operated by TMA Logistics in which Hutchison Ports is a 50% shareholder.

C-Job Designs Amsterdam's New Ferries

C-Job Naval Architects said it has delivered the concept design of a series of five sustainable car and passenger ferries to the City of Amsterdam. The vessels will operate 100 percent on electricity, thus providing an emission-free urban transport solution. The fully electric ferries are designed to recharge their batteries during the unloading and loading of passengers and vehicles. In order to maintain efficiency of service and a quick turnaround, this charging process will take place during a timeframe of a maximum of four minutes.

North Sea Canal Ports Transhipment Hits Record 100 MT

The positive economy led to a 2.5 percent increase in the transhipment of goods at the Port of Amsterdam to 81.3 million tonnes in 2017. Together with the other seaports in the North Sea Canal Area, transhipment rose to a record level of 100.8 million tonnes. In IJmuiden, transhipment was up 7 percent to 18.5 million tonnes. Beverwijk saw transhipment increase to 800,000 tonnes (up 6 percent). Zaanstad booked an increase of 35 percent to 300,000 tonnes. The increase at the Port of Amsterdam was mainly due to higher transhipment of oil products and agribulk. Oil products were up 4 percent to 44.4 million tonnes and agribulk rose 5 percent to 8.3 million tonnes.

Hutchison Ports Acquires 50% Stake in TMA

Hong Kong's Hutchison Ports has acquired a 50% shareholding in Amsterdam-headquartered terminal and logistics operator TMA Logistics. TMA has a variety of general cargo terminal operations together with warehousing, shipping, logistics and project cargo activities at three sites in Amsterdam and one in Antwerp as well as at Hutchison Ports Amsterdam (former known as Amsterdam Container Terminal). Commenting on the acquisition, Clemence Cheng, Executive Director, Hutchison Ports, said: “The acquisition of a 50% stake in TMA Logistics complements both our existing operations in Amsterdam and the activities of Hutchison Logistics. We have developed a good working relationship with TMA over the last three years which has brought a range of operations to ACT.

Amsterdam Port Committed to Reducing Shipping Emissions

Port of Amsterdam aims to reduce shipping emissions and minimise the environmental impact of these emissions by working with the shipping sector. In its Clean Shipping Vision for 2030, the Port describes how it intends to achieve its sustainability objectives through concrete actions, such as reducing emissions of docked sea cruise ships by 50 percent. The Clean Shipping Vision has a wide scope that encompasses emissions from ships themselves and those associated with port activities such as loading and unloading. As the implementation of the vision requires an international approach and long-term commitment, the target year for Port of Amsterdam’s ambitions has been set at 2030.

Transhipment NSC Ports Down 1%

The seaports in the North Sea Canal Area, which includes the ports of Amsterdam, IJmuiden, Beverwijk and Zaanstad, saw transhipment decrease in 2015 for the first time in years. The decrease amounted to 1%, with a total of 97 million tonnes in 2015 compared to 97.8 million tonnes in 2014. Port of Amsterdam is the largest port in the region and saw its transhipment edged down by 1.8% to 78.4 million tonnes (2014: 79.8 million tonnes). The above transhipment figures are tentative. The definitive figures will be published within a few weeks. Transhipment in IJmuiden rose to 17.9 million tonnes (+2%). Zaanstad and Beverwijk saw transhipment increase to 340,000 tonnes (+47%) and 343,000 tonnes (+44%) respectively.

EIB Antes €165 Mln for Amsterdam Sea Lock

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has agreed to provide EUR 165 million (187.5m) to support the construction of a new sea lock at IJmuiden, the principal access to the Dutch Port of Amsterdam. The current Noordersluis lock was built in 1929 and the new larger lock will ensure that the next generation of bulk carriers, container ships and cruise ships can continue to access the Port of Amsterdam and the North Sea Canal, and is expected to reduce waiting time for ships. The new sea lock will be 500 meters long, 70 meters wide and 18 meters deep, and able to operate in all tides. The IJmuiden sea lock is expected to support economic activity both along the North Sea canal and for companies using the Port of Amsterdam, Europe’s fourth busiest port.
