Boeing Deepwater Team Delivers Proposal to USCG

Navy Awards $816.6M New York (LPD 21) Contract to Northrop Grumman

U.S. Navy has awarded Northrop Grumman Corporation an $816.6 million contract for construction of New York (LPD 21), the fifth ship in the 12 ship LPD 17 series of San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ships. New York will be built at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems' Avondale Operations in New Orleans, with fabrication support from three other company facilities in Pascagoula and Gulfport, Miss., and Tallulah, La. The ship will be equipped to conduct amphibious warfare missions by embarking, transporting and landing elements of a landing force during an assault by helicopters, landing craft and amphibious vehicles. Navy’s Newest Amphibious Ship Named San Diego

Northrop Grumman Successfully Tests Low Observable Multifunction Stack

Northrop Grumman Corporation's Ship Systems sector has successfully tested the Low Observable Multifunction Stack (LMS) designed to demonstrate two different advanced exhaust suppresser systems for surface combatants. The exhaust systems, enclosed in a low signature composite structure, also integrate embedded multifunction communication arrays. Service Center. antennas that typically cover the topside of surface combatants," said Schenk. The project was sponsored by the Office of Naval Research through its Advanced Technology Demonstration (ATD) program. Northrop Grumman Ship Systems has been an active participant and ship system integrator on every ATD program related to Topside Integration.

Northrop Grumman Delivers Second Double-Hulled Tanker

Northrop Grumman Corporation's Ship Systems sector delivered the tanker Polar Resolution in a brief ceremony at its Avondale Operations in New Orleans, La. Polar Resolution is the second of five 140,000 deadweight (DWT) Endeavour-class double-hulled crude oil carriers Northrop Grumman Ship Systems is building for Polar Tankers, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Phillips Petroleum Company. "The delivery of this second double-hulled tanker underscores our commitment to compete in profitable commercial shipbuilding," said Dr. Philip A. Dur, corporate vice president and president, Northrop Grumman Ship Systems. The Endeavour-class tankers are the first crude oil carriers being built for the Alaskan trade in compliance with the federal Oil Pollution Act of 1990.

Northrop Grumman Delivers Another Sealift Ship

USNS Brittin (T-AKR 305), the sixth of seven Bob Hope-class strategic sealift ships being built by Northrop Grumman Corporation's Ship Systems sector, was delivered to the U.S. Navy at the company's Avondale Operations in New Orleans. Participating in the delivery were representatives of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), the supervisor of shipbuilding, conversion and repair, New Orleans, and Ship Systems officials. Delivery took place following Brittin's integrated sea trials, which combined the formerly separate builder's and Navy Acceptance Trials into one evolution. Brittin, and the 150-member Ship Systems integrated trials team, scored the highest grade ever for a strategic sealift ship, and also recorded a rating of "excellent" by Navy inspectors.

NAVSEA Awards Contract for Fifth San Antonio-Class Ship

Naval Sea Systems Command recently awarded Northrop Grumman Ship Systems, Avondale Operations, New Orleans a $171,050,850 contract modification to a previous contract for long-lead time materials for the fifth San Antonio-class ship, LPD 21. 2003. The Shipbuilding Construction (SCN) contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ships will be used to transport and land Marines, their equipment and supplies by embarked landing craft or amphibious vehicles augmented by helicopters in amphibious assault. Navy to Commission Amphibious Transport Dock Ship New Orleans

The Navy will commission the USS New Orleans, the newest amphibious transport dock ship, at a ceremony in New Orleans on March 10. Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana will deliver the ceremony’s principal address. The ship’s sponsor is Carolyn Shelton, wife of Gen. Henry H. Shelton, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. New Orleans honors the largest city of Louisiana and one of the world’s three largest seaports. In the past century, three naval ships have carried the name New Orleans: a protected cruiser, eventually designated CL-22, which served from 1898-1905 and 1909-1922; a cruiser designated CA-32, which served from 1934-1947; and an amphibious assault ship designated LPH-11, which served from 1968 -1997.

Fourth LPD 17 Class Amphibious Transport Dock Launched

The future USS Green Bay LPD 20 was launched this week from the building ways at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems Avondale Operations. The fourth amphibious transport dock of the San Antonio class entered the Mississippi River on August 11. Green Bay’s launching represents important progress since Hurricane Katrina devastated the New Orleans area less than a year ago. With many of the shipyard’s workers still living in trailers or Camp Katrina," temporary living quarters” the ship was launched with 208 units welded and 166 tanks completed. Work will now continue in more than 900 compartments while progressing toward Electronic System Light Off this fall.

Amphibious Ship San Antonio to be Christened

The lead ship of the Navy’s newest class of amphibious warship, San Antonio (LPD 17), will be christened during ceremonies July 19 at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems Avondale Operations in New Orleans. Gen. Michael W. Hagee, commandant of the Marine Corps, will deliver the ceremony's principal address. U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas will serve as ship's sponsor. In the time-honored Navy tradition, Hutchison will break a bottle of champagne across the bow to formally christen the ship, named for the city of San Antonio, Texas. San Antonio is the first surface ship ever designed in "virtual reality,” using computer modeling to design most of the ship before any steel was cut.
