Neste Launches IMO 2020 Compliant Fuel

Finland-based refiner Neste Corporation will begin to sell a low-sulfur marine fuel in northwest Europe in the fourth quarter of 2019.From January 1, 2020, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will enforce a 0.5% global sulfur cap on fuel content for areas currently with 3.5% limit.In these areas, all vessels will be required to use fuel with a maximum sulfur content of 0.5%, unless they use exhaust gas cleaning systems.Neste helps shipping companies to respond to the…

Death Toll Mounts as Lekima Roils Eastern China

BEIJING, Aug 12 (Reuters) - The death toll from typhoon Lekima in eastern China rose to 44 people on Monday morning, according to official data, as the storm continued up the coast, racking up billions of dollars in economic losses and widely disrupting travel.An additional 12 people were recorded dead from the storm, including seven from Zhejiang province and five from Shandong, with 16 people missing, according to data from provincial emergency bureaus and state media.State broadcaster CCTV had put the death toll at 32 on Sunday.Typhoon Lekima made landfall early on Saturday in China's Zhejiang province, with winds gusting up to 187 kmh (116 mph).

Cruise Ship Crewmember Goes Missing off Cuba

The search for a crewmember who reportedly went overboard from the Carnival Victory cruise ship about 30 miles northwest of Cuba was called off on Sunday, the U.S. Coast Guard said.Officials were unable to locate the missing crewmember after scouring approximately 2,600 square nautical miles over the course of over 45 hours.Involved with the search were the Coast Guard Cutters Charles Sexton (WPC-1108) and William Trump (WPC-1111) with Coast Guard Air Station Miami HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane aircrews.

Shipowners See Increase in IMO-Compliant Fuels, But Doubts Persist

Shipowners, who are facing one of the biggest changes in the oil industry in decades, are seeing more fuels that will be compliant with new rules on sulphur emissions from ships, but some say the way forward is far from clear.The United Nations shipping agency the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will from January 2020 limit the sulphur content in fuel ships use to 0.5%.With the exception of some zones around northwest Europe and North America known as Emission Control Areas where maximum sulphur content is restricted to 0.1% sulphur, the current global cap is 3.5%.The sulphur switch will be a mammoth task as it requires adapting the 300 million tonne a year bunker fuel market…

ZIM Cuts Q1 Net Loss

Washington Maritime Industry Worth $6.12bln

Survey Vessel Joins Hunt for Lost F-35

Japan expanded its search for a missing F-35 stealth fighter on  with a maritime survey vessel joining a navy ship and a U.S. Navy salvage team is expected in the area in coming days, a Japanese air force spokesman said.Only small pieces of the Japanese Air Self Defense Force aircraft's tail have been found since the advanced jet disappeared from radar screens during an exercise with three other F-35s over the Pacific, near northwest Japan, on April 9."The plane and the pilot are still missing," the air force spokesman said.
