The National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) Executive Control Board (ECB) recently selected 19 new R&D projects to be executed, totalling approximately $2.5-million, as part of their core project mission to reduce the costs associated with Navy shipbuilding and repair. NSRP is a collaboration of U.S. shipyards working together to reduce the cost of building, operating and repairing Navy ships by improving productivity and quality through advanced technology and processes. NSRP leverages public/private cooperation to manage cost-shared R&D based on a consensus Strategic Investment Plan.

NSRP Approves $1.4m in Shipbuilding Program Funds

As part of the National Shipbuilding Research Program’s (NSRP) core mission to reduce the costs associated with Navy shipbuilding and repair, the NSRP Executive Control Board has selected 15 new research and development projects for award, totaling approximately $1.4M. The NSRP Executive Control Board allocates funds on an approximately annual basis to fund a portfolio of relatively small, short timeframe projects - one year or less, $100K or less. The Project Portfolio contains summary information on all current and completed NSRP projects. Objective: This focus of this project is to: reduce costs associated with local cable hangers installed during late construction (when hot work is expensive)…

NSRP Approves $1.3M for Cost Reducing Project

As part of the National Shipbuilding Research Program’s (NSRP) core mission to reduce the costs associated with Navy shipbuilding and repair, the NSRP Executive Control Board has selected 13 new research and development projects for award, totaling approximately $1.3m. These projects will be executed under the purview of the 10 NSRP communities of practice known as the Ship Production Panels. Focus and interest among panel members regularly reveal relevant project opportunities which may not be well suited for larger-scale funding via the primary NSRP solicitation process. The Board therefore typically sets aside an amount of money each year to fund relatively small (less than $100K), short-term (12 months or less) projects recommended by the Panel Chairs.

NSRP White Paper Solicitation

The NSRP Executive Control Board (ECB) invites the 10 NSRP Ship Production Panels to submit whitepapers to be considered for funding as NSRP Panel Projects. Submissions must be in accordance with the latest NSRP Panel Project Guide (Rev. G dated 7/15/2010). The ECB continues to strongly support the Panels by providing funding for projects that are not well suited for funding via the major project solicitation process, yet address the program’s objectives for improving technology, networking, knowledge-sharing and innovation within the industry and the Navy, as well as working with regulatory agencies to the betterment of industry, employees and the environment.

Naval Shipbuilders Try to Get More for Less

As it becomes abundantly clear that a major injection of dollars is not imminent for the U.S. Naval shipbuilding sector, industry leaders met recently to mull ideas on getting more for less. Several hundred people gathered at a recent Plenary Session of the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) to hear shipbuilding industry executives and Navy brass discuss how to produce more ships for the same dollar. Both agreed they must work together to achieve this goal. "We are not making it in terms of a 300-ship Navy," said Vice Admiral Pete Nanos, Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command. He explained that without an infusion of cash or the dramatic implementation of new technology and business processes, the U.S.
