Launch Partners Ready for Iridium's GMDSS

Iridium Communications announced the first seven companies it has authorized to provide its Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) services, planned for commercial introduction in the first half of 2020. The seven companies, Arion Communications, AST, Marlink, Marsat, NSSLGlobal, Satcom Global and Speedcast will be the first in the industry to provide truly global satellite GMDSS service to mariners, and the first to offer a new choice in satellite network and equipment.

Iridium Unveils First GMDSS Terminal

Iridium Communications and partner Lars Thrane, has unveiled the Lars Thrane (LT) 3100S terminal designed to operate on the Iridium network for Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) vessel carriage requirements, with service targeted to launch in January 2020. This is the first terminal designed to provide truly global GMDSS services and is the first to be offered after the International Maritime Organization’s decision to recognize Iridium as just the second-ever satellite provider for this critical service.

NSSLGlobal, Teekay Sign Four-Year Satcom Contract

NSSLGlobal Brings Iridium CertusSM to Maritime Customers

NSSLGlobal has signed a Service Provider agreement with Iridium Communications Inc. that will see NSSLGlobal offer the new Iridium Certus L-Band service as part of its portfolio of maritime satcom offerings to its extensive customer base. Iridium Certus will be offered both as a standalone L-Band service and in conjunction with NSSLGlobal’s premier VSAT IP@SEA service as its preferred service assurance offering. The Iridium Certus service is suitable for vessels across the maritime spectrum, from recreational yachts and workboats to commercial fishing trawlers and merchant vessels.Iridium Certus will initially offer speeds of up to 352kbits but by early 2019 this will double to 704kbits ensuring that the service will be the most global and fastest L-Band satellite solution available.

Vertom-Bojen Chooses IP@SEA VSAT

Independent satellite communications provider NSSLGlobal has signed a deal to roll out its VSAT IP@SEA service to the worldwide trading part of Vertom-Bojen’s fleet.Based in Nermoor, Germany, Vertom-Bojen has a fleet consisting of mini bulkers, general cargo vessels and multi-purpose vessels. Vertom, located in Rhoon near Rotterdam, provides in-house chartering for Vertom-Bojen with more than 40 years’ experience and 80 vessels in chartering.In 2016, Vertom-Bojen rolled-out NSSLGlobal’s FleetBroadband Airtime plans across its fleet. Totem Plus to Offer Naval Dome's Cyber Solutions

Totem Plus is to offer its customers Naval Dome’s cyber defence solution as a supplement to its PC-based navigation and automation systems, following the September signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the cyber security specialist. The two Israel-based companies began cooperating last year when the Naval Dome solution was used to protect the Totem Plus ECDIS, IMAC (Integrated Monitoring, Alarm & Control), VDR and BAM (Bridge Alert Management) installations aboard a 5000TEU containership.

UK Electronic Solutions Inks Deal with Dalby Offshore

UK Electronic Solutions, (part of the NSSLGlobal group), said it has signed a contract with Dalby Offshore to install its motion and impact monitoring system, Oceanic Dynamics, on an additional three crew transfer vessels (CTVs). This follows a successful trial of the system on board Dalby Offshore’s largest CTV, the Dalby Ouse. Dalby Offshore’s 10-strong fleet primarily supports offshore wind farms, working with companies such as VBMS, SSE Dong Energy, Siemens and RWE Statoil, to move equipment and engineering crews as required. At 26 meters long, the Dalby Ouse catamaran is not only the largest CTV in Dalby’s fleet, it also has the largest engines and waterjets of any CTV in the U.K.

NSSLGlobal Launches Cellular/VSAT Hybrid System

VSAT provider NSSLGlobal has launched its first-ever hybrid cellular/VSAT solution for maritime vessels, the Cellular Marine System. This service will complement NSSLGlobal’s airtime VSAT offering, or other services such as FleetBroadband and Iridium Open Port, allowing seafarers accustomed to land services to transfer from satellite to mobile connectivity, while operating up to 25km offshore. VSAT Upgrade for MOL LNG Fleet

NSSLGlobal announced it has secured a deal with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) subsidiary MOL LNG Transport (Europe) Ltd. to replace the VSAT systems on board MOL LNG’s fleet of 15 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers. According to NSSLGlobal, its new  system meets MOL LNG’s performance and support requirements to deliver faster, more robust operational connectivity and ship-to-shore remote access, alongside improved crew welfare and MLC-2006 compliance. New Roles for Satcoms in Autonomous Shipping

Examining some questions regarding commercial autonomous and drone ships, as well as why VSAT currently presents the best solution for the communications and control of such vessels. The topic of autonomous shipping has been much in the news recently. We have seen, for example, the announcement in September 2015 that Inmarsat has begun participating in the Advanced Autonomous Waterborne Applications Initiative (AAWA) recently launched by Rolls Royce. This initiative is designed to move autonomous shipping from the drawing board to a commercial reality.

NSSLGlobal Trials Wi-Fi with British Royal Navy

Satellite communications provider NSSLGlobal announced the trial of its Wi-Fi service across selected British Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary ships. The service, based on NSSLGlobal’s proven technology for the commercial shipping sector, but modified for the Royal Navy will, for the first time allow crew to use their personal devices to connect with friends and family through internet services and applications. The Wi-Fi service is an all-in-one access control facility deployed as a gateway for managing Wi-Fi hotspots to enable BYOD (Bring your own Device) to be rolled out to Naval vessels. It will provide the user with a secure, available, supported and legally and morally compliant internet service providing access over existing ship bearers (whether satellite, ADSL or 3G/4G).

Inmarsat signed an agreement with NSSLGlobal Ltd, appointing the independent service provider for satellite communications solutions as a Value Added Reseller (VAR) of Global Xpress(GX) for the maritime market. GX will provide the shipping industry with global, superfast broadband service with speeds up to 50Mbps. Based on Ka-band technology, GX will consistently deliver higher performance through more compact terminals at a lower cost than existing VSAT services, making it accessible to many more vessels. NSSLGlobal Expands

Global satellite communications provider NSSLGlobal has announced the latest step in the continued development of their DVB2-RCS Network; with new coverage areas increasing the footprint of the network in East Africa and South America. The new coverage areas are provided by the SES-4 satellite. Two new beams will be operated out of NSSLGlobal’s Jacksonville Hub; the first providing comprehensive coverage around South America, the second covering the territories of North Africa, including The Gulf of Aden, Somalia, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya and the south of Sudan.
