Milestone Renewable Contract for Expro

Expro Connectors & Measurements’ new renewable division has been awarded an important order by Alstom. Expro Connectors & Measurements (C&M) partners with Alstom to develop a cable connection and management system to be deployed on one of Alstom’s ocean energy projects, thus contributing to Alstom’s development of clean technology solutions to harness the energy potential of the world’s oceans. Expro will be supplying its SpecTRON, DigiTRON and FoeTRON wet mateable products alongside a cable connection system and termination head as well as cable protection and aftermarket services for site cable termination. This system will provide the subsea connection between the power export cable and the energy converter device.

Marine engineering services firm SMS is midway through a contract for Woods’ Silver Fleet to build three huge pontoons for the Thames. Irish Wave Buoy to Be Deployed at US Navy Test Site

Despite some 7,000 miles separating Ireland and Hawaii, the two islands have a lot in common. The islands’ peoples have always looked to their respective oceans for resources, inspiration and opportunity. Today, Irish company Ocean Energy announced its wave energy convertor OE Buoy will be built by Oregon-based Vigor and deployed at the U.S. Navy’s Wave Energy Test Site on the windward coast of the Hawaiian Island of O’ahu in the fall of 2018. The contract value is $6.5 million out of a total project value of $12 million for this first of a kind grid scale project at the U.S.

Lockheed Martin in Australian Wave Energy Project

Lockheed Martin says it has signed a contract with Victorian Wave Partners Ltd. to begin developing the world’s largest wave energy project yet. The 62.5-megawatt peak power wave energy generation project will be built off the coast of Victoria, Australia, using Ocean Power Technologies' (OPT) PowerBuoy® wave energy converter technology. The company’s PowerBuoy wave generation technology uses a "smart," ocean-going buoy to convert wave energy into low-cost, clean electricity. The buoy moves up and down with the rising and falling of waves.

Ocean Yield Takes Delivery of Two Vessels

Norwegian shipowner Ocean Yield ASA took delivery of newly-built handysize dry bulk vessel "La Fresnais" and "Interlink Amenity". In press release, Ocean Yield said that it took the delivery of the 2018 built handysize dry bulk vessel "La Fresnais" on April 10. Upon delivery the vessel commenced a 12 years' bareboat charter to a company owned and guaranteed by Louis Dreyfus Armateurs Group (LDA). LDA is a French family group engaged in maritime transportation and services and founded more than 160 years ago.

Fieldwood Hungry for US Offshore Output

The Chief Executive of offshore oil and gas driller Fieldwood Energy LLC, Matt McCarroll, says he is not scared of the hurricanes, geological risks and costs that keep some oil companies out of the Gulf of Mexico. Instead, he is doubling down. The private equity-backed company - already the largest operator on the U.S. outer continental shelf - announced on Thursday it is closing a $480 million acquisition of Noble Energy’s assets in the Gulf of Mexico that will add 25,000 barrels per day (bpd) to its current net production of 72,000 bpd of oil equivalent.

Oregon Wave Energy Calls for US$ 10,000 Prize Entrants

Oregon Wave Energy Trust seeks submissions for Its 2012 Ocean Energy Fast Pitch competition. In conjunction with the seventh annual Ocean Renewable Energy Conference in Portland, Oregon, Oregon Wave Energy Trust (OWET), a non-profit organization working to promote the responsible development of ocean energy in Oregon, today announced it has begun seeking submissions for the 2012 Ocean Energy Fast Pitch Competition. For the first time, early stage technology developers will have the ability to “pitch” their technologies to a panel of judges in hopes of winning up to $10,000 worth of cash and in-kind support and services from OWET and ocean energy industry partners. One of the largest barriers to innovation in this field is financing.

FERC OKs License for Hydrokinetic Energy Project

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) issued the first license for a hydrokinetic energy project. The license was issued to Finavera Renewables Ocean Energy, Ltd. for construction and operation of a wave energy conversion system in the Pacific Ocean at Makah Bay in Washington State. The license is conditioned on the company obtaining all other necessary permits and authorizations prior to commencing construction. When and if constructed, the project would consist of four 250-watt steel wave energy conversion buoys and an associated mooring/anchoring and electrical connection system. (HK Law)

Energy from the Ocean: The Ocean Thermal Energy Converter

A 1MW plant developed by the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO) which will be built for installation off the coast of South Tarawa, Republic of Kiribati, in the South Pacific Ocean.

Despite historic lows in traditional oil and gas energy markets, research and develoment continues in earnest on a number of projects designed to produce green energy. The latest, an Ocean Thermal Energy Converter (OTEC) from KRISO, received Approval in Principle from classification society Bureau Veritas. KRISO (Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean engineering), established in 1973, is a government-funded research institute in the Republic of Korea and the leader in technology development in ships and ocean engineering.

European Commission Finances Renewable Energy Projects

The Commission has awarded over €1.2 billion to 23 innovative renewable energy technology (RES) projects. The projects cover a wide range of renewable energy technologies from bioenergy (including advanced biofuels), concentrated solar power and geothermal power to wind power, ocean energy and distributed renewable management (smart grids). The projects will be hosted in 16 EU Member States: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The project comprises a floating offshore 26 MW wind farm located 50 km from Marseille. Thirteen wind turbines will be installed on 13 moored floating structures which will transfer power to an onshore substation connected to the grid.

U.S. Offshore Wind Energy Project – BOEM Seeks Commercial Interests

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has issued a request to determine whether there is competitive interest in the construction of a transmission system between the Rhode Island coastline and Block Island, an important step in evaluating a transmission project proposed by Deepwater Wind that would deliver electrical power from its proposed 30 megawatt Block Island Wind Farm in state waters. BOEM received an application from Deepwater Wind requesting a right-of-way grant for an eight nautical mile-long, 200-foot wide corridor in federal waters on the Outer Continental Shelf to connect their proposed offshore wind farm, located in Rhode Island state waters approximately 2.5 nautical miles southeast of Block Island, to the Rhode Island mainland.

Navy Seeks Renewable Ocean Energy Technology

Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii – The Navy’s energy future was the focus of a two-day NAVFAC Conference and Industry Day, held March 26-28 at the Koa Malina Officers Club, Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH), Kaneohe Bay. The Navy, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy, will select three ocean energy power developers to occupy Wave Energy Test Site (WETS) moorings at Kaneohe Bay. "The Navy is committed to reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and is leading the way on the development of viable, renewable energy sources,” said NAVFAC Pacific Vice Commander Capt. Pete Lynch. “NAVFAC Pacific is working on ways to make the Navy’s shore infrastructure more energy independent and strengthen our energy security position. The ocean is an untapped resource and possible source of renewable energy.

Sener's FORAN Scores in Boxship Design

SENER said that two container ships designed by the Chinese company CIMC ORIC – that are part of a series designed with SENER’s FORAN System â€“ are in operation. BG Diamond and BG Jade that have been launched and are operating in the Pacific Ocean. The vessels were built in Chinese Changhong International Shipyard. The floating ceremony of the first one, BG Diamond, took place in July 2017. The series include 4+4 vessels in total, so there are still six vessels under construction. FORAN system was implemented in this design company in December 2015.

When one thinks of offshore renewable energy, one usually thinks of offshore wind. For the first time progress is being made in the U.S. to develop offshore wind resources. The first steel foundation jacket has been placed in the ocean floor to support the Deepwater Wind project off the coast of Block Island, Rhode Island. (See www.dwwind.com/press/#/1). But recently, progress is also being made in the development of tidal and wave energy resources closer to shore, which are known as marine hydrokinetic or MHK resources.

U.S. Coast Guard Sector Northern New England (SNNE) crews partner with Ocean Renewable Power Company (ORPC) members to demonstrate the nation's most robust tidal energy program on, Aug. 24, 2010. Gov. John Baldacci, Congressman Mike Michaud and Capt. James McPherson, SNNE’s commander, will unite at Coast Guard Station Eastport to celebrate the first-ever successful implementation of tidal energy at a federal facility. Massive tidal ranges in the ocean waters surrounding Eastport represent some of the largest in the country, rising and falling over 20 feet.

Crowley Christen First Two Ocean-class Tugboats

Crowley Maritime Corporation christen 'Ocean Wave' & 'Ocean Wind' built at Bollinger Shipyards, based in Amelia, La. USA. The new tugboats were designed by Crowley subsidiary Jensen Maritime located in New Orleans. At 146 and 156 feet in length, and with a minimum bollard pull of 150 metric tons, Crowley’s new ocean class tugs will be outfitted for long-range, high-capacity ocean towing, rig moves, platform and floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit tows, emergency response and firefighting.

Power Dynamics Innovations LLC, Stennis Space Center, Mississippi has been awarded by Gulf Island Shipyards LLC, the subcontract for the design, engineering, construction, installation, and testing of the Centerboard System for Oregon State University (OSU)'s Regional Class Research Vessel (RCRV). Gulf Island Shipyards LLC received a contract from Oregon State University for the construction of a Regional Class Research Vessel (RCRV) with an option for two additional vessels.

NOIA Applauds New Offshore Wind Consortium & Office

The National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA) strongly supports the responsible development of all offshore energy sources and applauds the announcement by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar of the establishment of both the Atlantic Offshore Wind Energy Consortium and the new Atlantic Offshore Renewable Energy Office in Virginia. “All forms of energy are important to our economic and energy security,” said NOIA President Randall Luthi. The NOIA membership includes Cape Wind, which on April 28, 2010 received the first ever DOI approval for an offshore wind farm. Other NOIA member companies include those who are positioned to provide essential services to future offshore energy projects.
