Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Japanese telecom giant MTI have reached an agreement to participate in a long-term demonstration of tidal energy being sponsored by MAKO Energy and Sentosa Development Corporation, which will provide the demonstration site.The demonstration will start next spring in a first-time attempt to commercialize tidal energy in Singapore.MAKO Energy is the Singapore-based subsidiary of Elemental Energy Technologies, a tidal turbine developer that has interest and expertise in the area of renewable energy solutions, particularly tidal power and its applications. I woke up the first night out of Anacortes, Washington, when the ship dropped out from under me and I levitated off my bunk. Then came the sound of shuffleboard in the conference room one deck above. The only trouble was, there's no shuffleboard on the research vessel Neil Armstrong. It was Halloween 2015 in the Northeast Pacific. We were in the first hours of the first voyage of the newest ship in the U.S. academic research fleet, and we were already plowing through 15-foot waves. But the ship’s motion made it feel more like we were facing much heavier seas.

Heeding the call to join “An Ocean in Common,” authors flooded the Oceans ‘13 MTS/IEEE San Diego technical program committee with a record number of abstracts in a single day. Special topics include an Ultra-deep track discussing current and prospective robotic technologies, plus a panel of scientists to consider research questions. Oceans2013 Chair Bob Wernli, and Co-Chair Kevin Hardy, developer of the unmanned landers for James Cameron’s DeepSea Challenge Expedition, will be the session conveners. “James’ intention is to be certain the door remains open to other explorers,” Hardy said.

OceanWorks International announce the successful re-deployment of the VENUS coastal network in the Strait of Georgia after repairs. Placed in Canadian waters in the Strait of Georgia, VENUS is part of the Ocean Networks Canada Observatory, is a cabled undersea laboratory with nodes that provide live video, acoustic images and real-time data for ocean researchers and explorers. VENUS delivers real time information from seafloor instruments via fiber optic cables to the University of Victoria, BC.

OceanWorks International has again been authorized by the U.S. Navy’s Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Note 5000 to perform Deep Submergence Systems Scope of Certification (DSS SOC) work in support of designated submarine rescue and intervention systems. OceanWorks International contracted to deliver additional seafloor nodes for CSnet International’s Offshore Communications Backbone (OCB). The OCB (Offshore Communications Backbone) subsea infrastructure, including five seafloor nodes which form the existing seafloor observatory portion of the system, was originally designed by OceanWorks International and delivered to Harris Caprock Communications (HCC) . OceanWorks International has been awarded a contract by the Fundy Ocean Research Center for Energy (FORCE) to instrument a cable termination for a ground breaking tidal energy project in the Bay of Fundy. The project includes the design, manufacture and integration of the subsea instrumentation, shore station, and commissioning. FORCE is deploying four power cables to connect prototype instream tidal turbines to a dedicated electrical sub-station. By providing this infrastructure, FORCE is lowering the ‘barrier to entry’ for turbine manufactures to test their equipment in one of the most demanding tidal environments. The planned deployment will take place in Atlantic Canada’s Bay of Fundy, which is renowned for having the highest tidal range in the world.

US-based subsea technology company OceanWorks International names Billy McKeown as General Manager in Istanbul, Turkey. Billy Mckeown becomes General Manager for Aykor Teknolojik Ürünler Sanayi ve Ticaret Anonim Şirketi (OceanWorks Aykor) in Istanbul Turkey. As General Manager, his function will be to manage the organisation’s operations from the Istanbul location ensuring OceanWorks International and its new affiliate OceanWorks Aykor continue to deliver industry leading, high quality products and services to our customer base.

Sub-sea technology company, OceanWorks International, establishes OceanWorks Aykor as Its Turkey subsidiary. OceanWorks International has been awarded phases 1 and 2 of a 3 phase contract by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) to assist with the re-certification of life support systems on the Deep Submergence Vehicle Alvin (DSV Alvin). Certification for manned diving operations will be provided under the authority of the U.S. Navy’s Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). OceanWorks International has been awarded a design, manufacturing and test contract to provide Marine Well Containment Company (MWCC) with a Subsea Dispersant Fluid System (SDFS). The system will further enhance MWCC’s existing dispersant injection system, also developed and manufactured by OceanWorks International. The SDFS is designed to sit on the seabed in the proximity of a subsea well at depths of up to up to 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) and provides the capability to deliver dispersant fluid to a deepwater well control incident in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. The system is designed to allow the dispersant flow to be provided by either a surface vessel or autonomously based on ROV provided flow input.

OceanWorks International To Deliver A-Frame Template for Submarine Rescue to Royal Canadian Navy. OceanWorks International has been awarded a contract by the Canadian Department of National Defense for another key piece of equipment which will enable submarine rescue cooperation and interoperability with the U.S. Navy. The A-Frame Template Kit is designed to work along with the Ship Interface Template Set (SITS) previously delivered to the Department of National Defence by OceanWorks International in March of 2010.

OceanWorks Contracted by Harris CapRock Communications for the Delivery of Two High Power Nodes as an Expansion to the Successful OCB Project.
