Meyer Werft Begins LNG Cruise Ship Build for AIDA

German shipbuilder Meyer Werft has laid the keel for AIDAnova, set to become the first cruise ship worldwide that will operate both at sea and in port fueled with liquefied natural gas (LNG). AIDAperla Delivered to AIDA Cruises

AIDA Cruises has taken delivery of the 12th vessel of its fleet, AIDAperla, from Japanese shipbuilder Mitshubishi Heavy Industries (MHI). The vessel was commissioned April 27 at a ceremony in Nagasaki, Japan in the presence of Michael Thamm, CEO Costa Group; Felix Eichhorn, President AIDA Cruises; Shunichi Miyanaga, President and CEO MHI; and Kazuaki Kimura, President and CEO, Industry & Infrastructure MHI. In the coming days AIDAperla will set sail for the Mediterranean where the vessel will be christened by model and presenter Lena Gercke on June 30, 2017, in Palma de Mallorca.

MSC Preziosa: The Ultimate in Cruise Ship Tech

MSC Cruises recently added a new state-of-the-art liner, the MSC Preziosa, helping the Italian company, truly a family business, attain the status of third largest cruise line in the world. MSC Preziosa is a Fantasia class cruise ship owned and operated by MSC Cruises. It entered service in March 2013 as an enhanced version of its sister ships, MSC Splendida and MSC Fantasia, and is identical to MSC Divina, which was launched in 2012. Built at the STX shipyard in St. Nazaire, France, MSC Preziosa is the new flagship of MSC Cruises. The new ship gained immediate recognition famous courtesy of its christening by actress Sophia Loren, and was significant as it signified that MSC Cruises is now the third largest cruise line in the world.

Coast Guard, Navy to Remove Buoys from Chic's Beach

The U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy are scheduled to remove two buoys from the Chic's Beach and Oceanview areas of Virginia Beach and Norfolk, Tuesday. The buoy removal at Chic's Beach is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and the removal at Oceanview is scheduled to follow. The buoys washed ashore during recent storms that passed through Hampton Roads. Navy assets from Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek will tow the buoys off the beach and back into the Chesapeake Bay, where a crew aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Frank Drew will hoist them aboard, assess them for damage and then return the buoys to their assigned navigational positions. The Coast Guard Cutter Frank Drew is a 175-foot Coastal Buoy Tender homeported in Portsmouth. uscg.mil

Singapore & Malacca Straits Tide Models Released

Recently developed commercial tidal models developed by applied oceanography specialist Tidetech for online viewing. The online viewer – OceanView – is an entry-level version of the company’s tidal models, viewable on any internet browser and on internet capable mobile devices. OceanView offers a highly detailed and accurate tidal current atlas featuring tidal current predictions at 1km resolution for every 30 minutes. Other features include latitude and longitude, place names, scale showing speed of current in knots (no interpolation necessary), and shipping lanes for easy reference.

Jeppesen Donates Chart Tools to Makedonia Academy

Jeppesen has donated a classroom supply of its C-MAP OceanView office chart and route planning systems to the Merchant Marine Academy of Makedonia (AEN Makedonias) in Greece.  The academy trains more than 100 officers yearly. With Jeppesen’s C-MAP OceanView product, students at AEN Makedonias will use C-MAP Professional+ electronic charts in their PCs for familiarization and route planning.  Planning routes using C-MAP Professional+ allows the students to determine optimal routings, taking into account depth, speed and navigational aids, and even weather prognoses can be overlaid on the electronic charts.  Such knowledge is an important part of the overall ECDIS training requirements stipulated by the IMO during 2010.

Jeppesen Marine Supports ECDIS Training

Jeppesen Marine is contributing to the training of the next generation of seafarers in electronic navigational charts and ECDIS by supplying systems and data to one of Norway’s maritime training institutions, Bergen Maritime Technical School. In addition to the C-MAP Professional vector database and ENCs that Jeppesen Marine already supplies for the school’s bridge simulators, the company will now supply 50+ C-MAP OceanView systems for route planning in an office environment. “I got the idea from the Norwegian Coastal Administration,” said Kåre A. Johnsen, the school’s navigation and bridge simulation instructor. “They decided to equip all pilots with laptop computers and electronic chart systems after the Rocknes accident.

A Zeus Night-Vision Camera System from the manufacturer OceanView Technologies Inc. is now featured on Christensen Shipyards' newest launch, set to debut at the 2009 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, October 29 – November 2. The 160-ft Odessa is the first Christensen yacht to feature a black hull and silver painted superstructure. The Zeus Thermal Camera System is painted metallic silver to match the superstructure. The OceanView Apollo II incorporates a thermal imager with its new 2x digital zoom and an ultra-low-light camera in the same 360° pan and tilt housing. The camera also has an on screen camera position locater and a home button. The Apollo II enables the user to see clearly not only in total darkness but also in a wide variety of poor lighting conditions including heavy rain, bright sun and some fog. New Marine Technology: The Hallmark of SMM 2000

The SMM exhibition in Hamburg has once again proven that it is the cradle of marine technology and the grand-daddy of all marine exhibitions. On display in 12 separate halls were more than 1,300 exhibitors from more than 50 countries, launching new products and discussing business with an estimated 37,000 visitors. Italy: Grimaldi Continues Fast Track Expansion

Manuel Grimaldi confided to some close friends last December that not only had he decided to set up a new line from Italy to Spain but also to purchase Superfast 1 now called Eurostar Roma for about $49.3 million. The specification of the vessel will mean a greater presence in Mediterranean RoRo and in fact there are now three of this type of vessel under the name of Grimaldi Ferry Prestige. The new purchase Eurostar Roma (pictured opposite page) was presented by the Naples shipping group in Rome on January 23, 2004. The vessel is 24,000 tons, 570.8 ft. (174 m) long, with a beam of 78.7 ft. (24 m) and a cruising speed of 27 knots. Eurostar Rome can carry 1,400 passengers with 100 cars as well as 110 trailers.

Costa Victoria in for a Facelift at Lloyd Werft

Radical changes are imminent for Costa Victoria, one of the nine members currently comprising the Costa Crociere fleet. On January 6, next year, at the end of her New Year's Eve cruise, the ship will leave the port of Savona bound for Bremerhaven in Germany, where it will arrive after 5 days at sea and undergo work at the Lloyd Werft shipyard. During Costa Victoria's stay in the yard, which will last approximately 30 days, it will be dry-docked for routine maintenance work, which is performed regularly every two years on all the company's vessels. Costa Fortuna Leaves For Sea Trials

Costa Costa Fortuna has taken to the open sea for the first time. Costa Crociere’s new flagship which, with her 105,000 gross tonnage, is the largest cruise ship in the history of Italian seafaring, today left Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente shipyards, where her fitting out is nearing completion, bound for the builder’s Palermo yard. This crossing will be used to carry out sea trials. On the way from Genoa to Palermo Costa Fortuna will be subjected to various preliminary operational tests on her systems, equipment and engines.
