SCHOTTEL Supplies Propulsion for New Expedition Cruise Ship

Following the delivery of the expedition cruise vessel Hondius in 2019, Oceanwide Expeditions ordered a second vessel from Croatian shipyard Brodosplit, due for delivery by the end of 2021.Hondius and the new sister vessel Janssonius are said to be the first vessels in the world to be built according to the LR PC6 class, which meets the latest Lloyd’s Register requirements for Polar Class 6 vessels.SCHOTTEL, which offers a series of ice-strengthened propulsion systems, said it has been selected again to supply highly reliable main and auxiliary propulsion units.

Brodosplit Cuts Steel for Expedition Ship

Oceanwide Expeditions, the Dutch company specializing in expedition-style voyages to Antarctica and the Arctic, has cut steel on its newbuild, Polar Class 6 expedition ship, the Janssonius at Croatia’s Brodosplit shipyard.The design, size and 174-passenger capacity is the same as its sibling vessel, the Hondius (174 passengers) delivered in 2019, and a nearly identical size and design, the new ship will be equivalent to a 1A super ice-class ship, the line said.Completely on schedule, the Steel Cutting Ceremony took place in Split's Brodosplit shipyard, which marks the beginning of the construction of the vessel., it said.Janssonius´ completion is scheduled for 2021 and as of November 2021…

Cruise Ships: Oceanwide Orders Polar Class Ship

The expedition cruise ship market maintains its torrid pace with news that Oceanwide Expeditions has orders another Polar Class 6 ship, following the success of its ship Hondius.Croatian shipyard Brodosplit, the builder of Hondius, won the follow on order for M/V Janssonius, which is scheduled to be completed in October, 2021. The 174-passenger ship will be nearly identical in size and design, complete with a Polar Class 6 ice-strengthened vessel equivalent to a 1A super ice-class ship.

IAATO Votes for Whale Protection Measures

The International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) voted measures into effect that will reduce the incidence of tourist ships striking whales around the Antarctic Peninsula. The vote occurred at its annual meeting, held in Cape Town this year, and offers Antarctic tour operators two possible options: They must either commit to a 10-knot speed restriction within a specific time zone and area, or (if they already have a program to reduce whale strike) they must recruit an extra crewmate to monitor and record whale sightings within the said area and time zone.These measures go into effect July 1, before the start of the 2019 – 20 Antarctic travel season…

Trouble started 12 days into a 31-day journey from Ushuaia, Argentina, one of the southernmost cities in the world, to Ascension Island, an isolated volcanic island near the Equator. After returning from a small island, the ship suffered a complete power failure. Ship's engineers were able to fix the problem and course was set for Tristan de Cunha heading north in order to avoid a fierce storm system. En route, the ship suffered another engine failure. It was thought the ship could complete the cruise around the islands…

Stratos Acquires Blue Ocean Wireless Assets

Stratos BV, a remote communications provider, has purchased most of the operational assets of Blue Ocean Wireless Ltd. (BOW). BOW was a provider of shipboard GSM services that enabled crewmembers to use their personal GSM phones to communicate with family and friends by voice and SMS. As part of the acquisition, Stratos assumes responsibility for providing services to most of BOW’s customers, including many large commercial shipping companies worldwide. Since July 1, BOW customers have been receiving invoices directly from Stratos. Stratos will continue to market and sell BOW’s services to existing and new customers, under the new brand GSM Oceanwide.

Oceanwide Appoints New Management

Oceanwide announced a new management structure for Oceanwide Netherlands, Oceanwide Baltics and Oceanwide Offshore Services. The new structure is effective immediately. Oceanwide Netherlands has appointed Jan Hessel Dijkstra as its new Managing Director. Jan Hessel has been with Oceanwide for five years in the position of branch manager and sales manager and has solid experience within the employment sector. Oceanwide Acquires Subsidiary of Barber International

Oceanwide, the leading international employment agency in the maritime field, announced today the acquisition of Norsk Bemanning AS from Barber Ship Management, a company within the Barber Group. Oceanwide Expands Into Denmark

Oceanwide, an international employment agency in the maritime field, signed an agreement to acquire Haraship Manning Aps of Denmark. The new subsidiary will start operating under the name Oceanwide Haraship Denmark Aps. Haraship Manning Aps is a crewing company based in Frederikshavn, Denmark; focusing on fishing and short sea shipping within Denmark as well as having a business interest and network in Faroe Islands, Greenland and Iceland. The existing office staff of 2 people - managing director Gilli Haraldsen (former owner) and operations manager Niels Maindal - will remain responsible for the daily operation of the new subsidiary.
