Skipsteknisk Design for Volstad

According to a report from Offshore Shipping Online, naval architect company, Skipteksnisk, has confirmed that Volstad Maritime in Aalesund, Norway ordered another seismic research vessel based on a Skipsteknisk design. New Program Makes it Easier to Ship Cars at Port Everglades

Crowley Maritime has helped launch a pilot Vehicle Validation Export Process Program that now allows shippers to submit original vehicle export documentation electronically instead of delivering physical copies to a local customs trade office. The automated program, which is the first of its kind anywhere in the country, is currently being offered in Port Everglades to exporters shipping used vehicles from South Florida to destinations throughout the Caribbean, Central America and beyond. Crowley was a critical player in developing the test program, which kicked off earlier this month.

DMA to Digitalise Port State Control

The Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) and European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) are examining how online control of certificates could make Port State Control (PSC) inspections more efficient. This happens in the wake of the DMA’s implementation of digital certificates on Danish ships. Time is money, and PSC inspections are time-consuming since they include scrutiny of the ship’s certificates as well as inspection of its compliance with operational and safety regulations. But how to make PSC inspections more efficient without compromising safety? By enabling online control of certificates.

Offshore wind power continues to gain momentum in the United States. How will the Jones Act affect the development, operation and maintenance of offshore wind farms? After years of planning and some unsuccessful attempts, offshore wind power developers finally have their first success in the United States. The Block Island Wind Farm, a 30-megawatt wind farm located just off the coast of Rhode Island, began operations in December 2016, fulfilling the goal of the project’s developer, Deepwater Wind LLC, to build America’s first offshore wind farm.

EPL Announces First Production from Well

New Orleans-based Energy Partners Ltd., reported its South Timbalier 41 Cap Rock discovery well is now online and is producing about 1,900 barrels of oil and 18 million cubic feet of natural gas per day. EPL is the well’s operator with 60 percent working interest and W&T Offshore Inc. holds the remaining 40 percent. EPL is an independent oil and natural gas exploration and production company with operations focused along the U.S. Gulf Coast, both onshore and offshore.

Bourbon, Tanjung Discussing OSV Part Ownership Deal

Malaysian Group Tanjung Offshore Berhard and Bourbon Far East Pte. Ltd. have entered exclusive discussions for the sale of 51% ownership of nine Bourbon Offshore Supply Vessels (OSVs) operating in Malaysia. In parallel, Tanjung has invited Bourbon to become a shareholder in their company. Veripos Extends Network with Falklands

Veripos, a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning solutions to the offshore oil and gas industries, has extended its multi-source Differential GPS service for South Atlantic and Southern Ocean regions with the establishment of new reference station facilities in the Falkland Islands. The new station will help facilitate further positioning support for a range of offshore positioning and survey tasks by delivering augmentation on the 98W and AORW Inmarsat communications beams. Borr Drilling Buys Paragon Offshore

Offshore rig firm Borr Drilling, controlled by Norwegian investor Tor Olav Troeim, is proposing to buy its rival Paragon Offshore for $232.5 million in a push to consolidate the fragmented rig market, it said on Thursday. A plunge in oil prices in 2014 forced oil firms to cut back on offshore exploration, reducing demand for drilling rigs at a time when new rigs ordered during the boom years were entering the market, pushing rates down to, or below, operating costs. Stratos Introduces ChatCard Online 5.0

Dresser-Rand to Supply For Statoil Platform

Dresser-Rand will supply gas export compression equipment for Statoil's Troll A platform in the North Sea. The equipment, approaching $8 million, is being purchased by ABB AS Offshore Systems and will be supplied under the terms of D-R's frame contract with Statoil. D-R will provide two DATUM centrifugal compressors driven by 40 MW electric motors to the main contractor ABB AS Offshore Systems. The motors, purchased by Statoil directly from ABB Industries will be shipped to the module manufacturing yard in Norway and connected to the compressor packages under supervision of D-R and ABB. D-R's LeHavre, France, facility will provide the DATUM compressors. Delivery is scheduled for September 2003, with the equipment expected to go online in May 2005.

835 Ships Sold to Scrap Yards in 2017

More than 800 large oceangoing commercial vessels were sold to the scrap yards in 2017, according to the latest data from the NGO Shipbreaking Platform. Of the 835 ships sold to scrap yards, 543 vessels – or 80.3 percent of total tonnage dismantled globally – were broken down on the beaches of Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. However, the number of vessels and total GT scrapped in the tree nations decreased compared to 2016. Still, of the 20.7 million GT dismantled worldwide in 2017, 16.6 million GT was on the beaches.

Safebridge Adds Kelvin Hughes ECDIS Training

Online simulation training specialist Safebridge will launch a new training course for Kelvin Hughes MantaDigital Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS). Kelvin Hughes Marine Systems, a supplier of ships’ bridge systems, has appointed Safebridge and its sister company MSG MarineServe GmbH as authorized training providers for Kelvin Hughes ECDIS products. The new course is available online through the Safebridge cloud-based Internet infrastructure, on-board or as classroom-based training through the ECDIS Training Consortium (ETC) Network. The Safebridge online ECDIS training course includes guided lessons, open freeplay and a competency test.

China Sells Ships Online

Chinese Maritime Court has sold five vessels of bankrupt Wenzhou Shipping, subsidiary of Zhejiang Shipping Group,  through online auctions on Taobao.com  for a  a total price of $22.81m. The auctioned ships include 2011-built 57,000-dwt supramax bulker Zhe Hai 167, 2009-built 33,400-dwt handysize bulker Zhe Hai 162, 2009-built 23,500-dwt handysize bulker Zhe Hai 156 , a tugboat  and an oil barge. Singapore-based company Varada One's vessel was auctioned off on online shopping platform Taobao  for $11.7,  Xinhua news agency reported. The VLCC Varada Blessing is 1993-built, 300,000 dwt tanker.

Northern Offshore Sells Semi-Sub

Northern Offshore announces it has sold its semisubmersible Energy Driller to an unnamed party for conversion to alternative use. The unit had previously been cold stacked at a shipyard in Bahrain following completion of a term drilling contract in India. Northern Offshore previously sold the drillship Energy Searcher in late 2016. Chairman and (Interim) CEO Dr. Northern Offshore is a global offshore drilling company historically operating in the North Sea, West Africa, South Asia, Near East and Southeast Asia.

Production Cost of North Sea Oil and Gas Doubles

A chronic shortage of rigs and workers has doubled the cost of producing oil and gas in the North Sea, threatening to make the UK’s domestic oil industry uncompetitive, warned UKOOA, the association of North Sea offshore operators, according to Times Online. Signs that costs are crimping investment emerge in the association’s survey of North Sea activity. Further evidence of the dramatic worldwide oil industry cost escalation emerged in a new index showing a 53 per cent increase in project costs over just two years. The Upstream Capital Costs Index, launched by IHC and Cambridge Energy Research Associates (Cera), climbed 13 per cent in the six months to the end of October because of soaring inflation in hiring rigs, shipyard fabrication and labour.

Shell Increases Interest in Offshore Brazil BC-10

Shell today has announced that it has completed the acquisition of an additional 23% interest in the Parque das Conchas (BC-10) project offshore Brazil for US $1 billion. Regulatory approvals have been obtained and Shell will now hold a 73% operating interest. The purchase is effective January 1, 2013. Partner ONGC, previously holding a 15% working interest, will now hold a 27% working interest. This purchase is the result of pre-empting a third party’s bid for Petrobras’ 35% interest in BC-10. Currently, BC-10 is producing approximately 50,000 boe/d. Since coming on-stream in 2009, BC-10 has produced more than 80 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe).

Online Design, Drafting Offered

Shipyards and marine and offshore fabrication facilities across North America are being offered a new way to fill their design and drafting requirements. Genoa Design International Ltd. has launched a unique web-based system that facilitates the delivery of detail design and drafting services through the Internet. From its base in Newfoundland, Canada, Genoa Design manages projects through a combination of traditional and on-line technologies. Detail design, drafting and 3-D modeling work is done by in-house designers and engineering technologists using industry-standard computer applications. Project management is handled through the Design Information Control System, Genoa's copyrighted Internet software.
