ABS Addresses Marine and Offshore Industry Challenges
ABS held its annual Marine and Offshore Technical Committee Meetings in Houston in early May and addressed industry challenges and sharpen focus on future needs. âCollaborating with significant and recognized industry leaders representing ship owners, yards, operators, equipment manufacturers and vendors helps guide our research and development focus,â said ABS Chief Technology Officer Howard Fireman. Offshore Wind Rules Set New Standard
Lloydâs Register releases new Rules, Class Notation and Guidance Notes for âWind Turbine Installation and Maintenance Vessels and Liftboatsâ to reflect industry best practice and new novel designs. The new Rules form part of the wider Mobile Offshore Unit Rule set 2013 launched by Lloydâs Register in June, and is for vessels engaged in installation and/or maintenance activities relating to offshore wind turbines. It covers a number of unit types as well as liftboats, whose primary function is to provide support services to offshore wind turbine installations or other types of offshore installation. Vessels which comply with the requirements of the new Rules will be eligible for a new classification notation (MainWIND).
Lloydâs Releases Guide for FLNG Facilities
Lloydâs Register published a rule set to guide the design, construction and operation of floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facilities â the biggest, most complex floating structures ever seen â meaning natural gas will now be safer, cheaper and have a lower environmental footprint, the company said. Launched today, Lloydâs Registerâs Offshore Rules for FLNG vessels and facilities are based on a real-world projects and extensive work with key industry alliances. The Offshore Rules for FLNG reinforce Lloydâs Registerâs position at the forefront of new maritime and energy technology, building upon the work the company has performed with numerous LNG firsts, such as classing the first LNG fuelled tanker, Argonon.
OTC Approves New Construction Rules
Two new Rule-sets approved at the first Offshore Technical Committee (OTC) held at LR's Global Technology Centre in Singapore. Lloyd's Register say that these two new rule-sets will be made public later this month (May 2013). The Floating Offshore Installations at a Fixed Location 2013 Rules and the Mobile Offshore Unit 2013 Rules, contain several changes from previous versions in order to improve usability, reflect industry best practice, new novel designs and legislative changes. ABS Forms Independent Offshore Technical Committee
ABS continues to cultivate industry expertise for the development and modification of Rules and Guides with the formation of The Offshore Technical Committee of ABS. âABS once again has taken the lead in working with the offshore industry,â said ABS President and CEO Christopher J. The goal of the recent division of The Technical Committee of ABS into separate committees was to refine the focus of each committee to facilitate information exchange for Rule and Guide development and modification.
