Belle Chasse, La. shipyard C&C Marine and Repair said it has delivered the second vessel in a series of 15 towboats it is building for Metairie, La. based Maritime Partners, LLC.The 2,600-horsepower, 84’ x 34’ towboat Brooks M. Hamilton was designed by Entech Design, LLC, based in Kenner, La., with the 3D modeling and production drawings done by C&C Marine and Repair’s in-house engineering department. The design includes two Cummins QSK38-M1 main engines, provided by Cummins Mid-South, that are paired to two Reintjes WAF 665 reduction gears, provided by Karl Senner, LLC.

SAAM Towage Canada transported BC Ferries’ first two electric hybrid ferries from Ogden Point to Point Hope Maritime, where inspection and final testing will be conducted.Scheduled to begin operating mid-year, the ferries have 300-person, 47-vehicle capacity and feature low CO2 and noise emissions.The crews of the tugs Salish and Hyack were in charge of the operation, which spanned 80 nautical miles and lasted close to 26 hours from port to port.(Photo: SAAM Towage Canada)

The future Capt. Jacques Cartier, the second of three Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels (OFSV) to be designed and built by Seaspan at its Vancouver Shipyards (VSY), began sea trials on October 10, 2019 from Seaspan’s Vancouver Drydock where final outfitting, set to work and commissioning has taken place since its launch in June.“With the future Capt. Jacques Cartier headed out to sea today, excitement in our NSS program is growing,” said Mark Lamarre, CEO, Seaspan Shipyards.

The brand new Canadian Coast Guard vessel Sir John Franklin crashed into Victoria’s breakwater on March 22, crumpling a side of its back-end.The Seaspan-Shipyards-built Sir John Franklin was in sea trials when it crashed into Ogden Point breakwater.The 64-meter vessel, was heading into port when it banged into the wall, damaging it as well as the breakwater."The Canadian Coast Guard’s first of three new fisheries science vessels crashed on its first test run last week, raising concerns that the summer delivery date may not be met," said a press note from the Chamber of Shipping.No injuries were reported, but the propeller and rudder were damaged.

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) and U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) are investigating the fatality of a worker on board the Petrobras 10,000 drillship in the Gulf of Mexico. Petrobras America Inc. reported the fatality on board the Transocean Ltd. owned drillship at about 4:45 a.m., December 2, 2017. The rig was in an area of the Gulf known as Walker Ridge 469, about 172 miles south of Port Fourchon, La. The deceased worked for Spencer Ogden Ltd. and was participating in pipe handling operations at the time of his injury.

Two tourists  -Victoria and Joseph Winthal - disembarking the Golden Princess Cruise Ship in Ogden Point have got an unexpected surprise. They were selected by Greater Victoria Harbour Authority as the six millionth cruise ship passenger to Ogden Point. To celebrate, the couple were given a variety of prizes donated by local businesses, and free admission to several tourist attractions. Victoria AM volunteers in traditional old-fashioned costumes were on hand as always to greet ship passengers. “Victoria is Canada’s busiest cruise ship port of call, and we wouldn’t have been able to welcome more than six million without the help of many in our community,” said Ian Robertson, CEO of the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority.

Cost-cutting in Britain's North Sea oil and gas sector could lead to more acute skills shortages in future, industry experts have warned, with some expressing concerns that safety could be compromised. A plunge in crude prices over the last 12 months has prompted oil majors such as Royal Dutch Shell, BP , Chevron and ConocoPhillips to lay off hundreds of workers. Oil field services groups such as Amec Foster Wheeler , Wood Group and Petrofac are also in consultation with employees over job cuts.

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) formally recognized the crew of an education vessel at a ceremony Wednesday at Coast Guard Air Station Detroit, located at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Mich., for saving two people when they responded to a mayday call in the Detroit River on Aug. 11, 2013. During the ceremony, Capt. Jeff Ogden, commander of Coast Guard Sector Detroit, presented Norman Raymond, Stephen Stewart and Elizabeth Nebei with the Captain David P. Dobbins Award for excellence in search and rescue.

I propose that the Legislative, Executive, Judicial Branches of the federal government should cooperatively work toward the rebuilding of the presumption in favor of federal preemption with respect to all matters related to maritime commerce. I also propose that maritime stakeholders undertake measures to make this a reality. The Constitution already allows for such preemption – and it has been implemented with regard to various issues over time, particularly in the early days of the Republic.

Ince & Co advised long standing client Golar LNG Energy (Golar LNG) on the successful completion of an 11-year time charter party (TCP) for the provision of a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) and associated mooring to PT Nusantara Regas (PTNR), a joint venture between Indonesian energy companies Pertamina and PGN, for Indonesia's first FSRU terminal in West Java. The regasified LNG will be supplied by PTNR to Indonesia’s state owned electricity company PLN as a replacement for high speed diesel.

MAR Inc., Rockville, Md., is being awarded a maximum amount $30,000,000 cost-plus-fixed-fee, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract in support of the Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center, Port Hueneme, for the operation, maintenance, and repair of the M/V Independence, including providing research, development, testing, and evaluation of undersea surveillance systems, load handling systems, acoustic array systems, cable system components, cable and system survivability studies, installation methods, test vessel support, and training range establishment and maintenance. Work will be performed in Port Hueneme, Calif. The term of the contract is not to exceed 60 months, with an expected completion date of April 2015.

The Department of Transportation has announced 70 grants totaling $98m in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds that will be used to improve small shipyards throughout the United States. The funds, awarded through the Maritime Administration’s Assistance to Small Shipyards program, will help create and preserve jobs, provide valuable employment training and make much needed improvements to shipyards across the country. The Small Shipyards Grant program provides up to 75 percent in ARRA funds for a project and requires the remainder be matched by the shipyard. One year following the fall of the Iron Curtain, U.S. President George Bush and Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev signed the START treaty, which stated that both nations would agree to dismantle all nuclear weapons. How do these events half way around the world effect U.S. builders of boats and barges? Significantly, as it turns out. It appears that the fall in nuclear submarine production has given rise to one of the country’s fast growing barge building companies. The middle to late 1980s was a watershed of sorts for the U.S. shipbuilding industry.

The Secretary of the Navy has presented the Energy Conservation (ENCON) Awards for FY2003 in ceremonies conducted at the Navy Memorial in Washington, DC. These award winners represent Navy ships that have been singled out for outstanding execution of innovative energy conservation measures, and consistent reduction in energy consumption. Energy conservation awards were also presented to Navy shore activities and Marine Corps bases. Using Incentivized ENCON Energy Awareness, the fleet was able to reallocate over 1,160,000 barrels of fuel, to high OPTEMPO ships. In ship operating terms, this is equivalent to 22 “ship years” of underway steaming using energy conservation initiatives provided by NAVSEA’s ENCON Team.

USS Ogden (LPD 5), the Navy’s oldest active amphibious ship, is currently serving as the Afloat Forward Staging Base (AFSB) for the multinational maritime coalition operating in the North Persian Gulf. As the AFSB for Commander, Task Group (CTG) 158.1, the 41-year-old amphibious transport dock is providing logistical support for the various forces that are protecting Iraq’s territorial waters and oil platforms, as well as serving as a training platform for Iraqi sailors and marines. “The crew is having a wonderful time,” said Cmdr. James Hruska, Ogden’s commanding officer. On the bridge, Ogden Sailors work and stand watches alongside Iraqi naval officers.

The U.S. Coast Guard’s Pacific Tactical Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) 102 is teaching Iraqi marines valuable skills that will help them protect Iraqi infrastructure and territorial waters in the future. Embarked aboard USS Ogden (LPD 5) in the North Persian Gulf as part of Combined Task Force (CTF) 158, the eight-man Coast Guard team routinely trains the Iraqi marine platoons in Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) operations through a series of almost daily staged events. “We are basically teaching them use of force, tactical procedures in terms of boarding ships and how to handle a large crew,” said Lt. j.g. Seafair is Seattle's monthlong traditional summer festival of parades, air shows, boat racing and ship visits. Visiting Sailors and Coast Guardsmen will participate in various recreational, community and special events throughout their weeklong port visit here. “The Parade of Ships is important because people of Seattle get to see the cloth of the nation, the great young men and women who keep freedom possible,” said Rear Adm.
