Missing Engine Parts Lead to Ohio River Towboat Fire -NTSB

A missing retaining ring and mounting bracket on the port main diesel engine led to an engine-room fire on a towing vessel near Belleview, Ky., the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said.Florida Marine Transporters' (FMT) towing vessel Capt. Kirby Dupuis was pushing loaded dry cargo barges on the Ohio River when a fire broke out on its portside engine on November 9, 2021. The crewmembers fought the fire using portable extinguishers and attempted to activate the vessel’s fixed fire-extinguishing system. The fire was eventually extinguished by local firefighters.

John Deere Rolls Out Trio of Marine Engines

John Deere Power Systems has expanded its lineup with three new marine engines available for order from early 2018. The new 4.5L PowerTech 4045SFM85 offers high power to weight ratio for repowering and new vessel construction, and is ideal for planing and semi-displacement hulls, the manufacturer said. It has two ratings for light-duty commercial vessels, high-speed governmental applications and high-speed pleasure craft, which includes an M4 rating with 205 kW (275 hp) at 2,600 rpm and M5 rating with 235 kW (315 hp) at 2,800 rpm. The 4045SFM85 propulsion engine ratings will meet U.S.

MacGregor Launches Steering Alert System

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has launched Soteria, a new alert system designed to complement its Hatlapa and Porsgrunn range of steering gear. Named after the Greek goddess of safety, the system has been designed to offer a series of benefits for both ship owners and shipyards. “The system’s alert display can be fully integrated on the vessel’s bridge, ensuring clear and easy access to a comprehensive range of alerts,” explained Henrik Schädel, Hatlapa Drives & Controls expert at MacGregor. “The system has been designed for simple, economical installation and requires only one programmable logic controller (PLC), a feature which benefits shipyards," Schädel notes.

Capstone Turbine Expands Marine Product Line

Capstone Turbine Corporation, a clean technology manufacturer of microturbine energy systems, is expanding its product offering in the marine market and has appointed six Capstone marine distributors. In addition, the company has launched a contest that will give away up to 130 kilowatts of marine power to three existing or new ship owners. Yanmar Repower Spells Fuel Savings

The rising cost of diesel fuel can significantly cut into commercial fishing profits, especially with an inefficient engine. But Mazatlan businessman Jesus Loya realized a nearly $60,000 annual fuel savings after repowering one of his fishing vessels with a new Yanmar diesel. Prelube Pumps Extend Engine Life

It is no revelation that maximizing equipment life directly impacts the bottom line. When it comes to profitability, every dollar saved on equipment maintenance is a dollar earned. Prelube pumps move oil from the oil sump to the moving parts of an engine before engine start-up. Pre-lubing before every start is an inexpensive way to extend the life of engine-driven equipment. When an engine is running, the engine's oil pump supplies pressurized oil into the center of the bearings to create a cushion that separates the bearing surface from the crankshaft. Once the engine is running, the surfaces never touch because they ride on this film of oil. As soon as the engine shuts down, however, the oil that comprises the cushion begins to drain away and the film thins.

New Two-Stroke Engine Variants for China

MAN Diesel has developed two new engine variants targeted at the Chinese coast and river segment that represents some of the world’s busiest shipping lanes. The new S35MC-C9 and S40MC-C9 variants are based on the experience gathered from MAN Diesel’s existing range of well-proven, mechanically operated, two-stroke, low-speed engines. The optimal ship size for this Chinese segment ranges from 10-20,000 dwt with a propulsion plant that generates between 5-8,000 kW at an approximate engine speed of 140 rpm.

USCG Reports: Small Fire, Important Lessons

The U.S. Recently in the North East an 83-ft long passenger ferry which has the capacity to carry 306 persons experienced a small engine room fire. The vessel was just off its dock at the time the fire started and onboard were 110 persons. Because of the nearness to the dock, the vessel’s Captain chose to disembark the passengers prior to manually activating the engine room CO2 system and closing the main fuel stop valve. The CO2 system extinguished the fire and when the local fire department arrived later they found the port main engine’s exhaust insulation smoldering.

Self-Cleaning Filter System Cuts Maintenance Costs

A routine oil and filter change in the tight quarters of the engine room onboard a boat is normally a messy and awkward job. Buckets of used lube oil and filter cartridges must be lugged up the narrow galley stairs for disposal and new oil and filters must be carried down the stairs, all in the short time while the boat is in dock for maintenance. Boston Harbor Cruises found that Alfa Laval's Eliminator, an automatic self-cleaning filter system installed in combination with Cummins' Centinel system in its high-speed catamarans, saved $2,100 per engine per year in oil, filter and labor costs. With a total of three boats, each with four engines, equipped with the Eliminator, Boston Harbor Cruises save a total of $25,200 per year.

San Francisco Bay: The Next Generation

On his day off Red and White Port Engineer Mike Epstein likes to take his nearly three-year-old son Mark down to the Bay and onboard the tour boats that he maintains. On a recent May morning he took a little extra time with his boy to show me around the refurbished and repowered 90x34-foot Royal Prince moored to the company dock at Pier 43 1/2 on the Embarcadero. The deep personal commitment to a greener environment is common in amidst the beauty of the San Francisco Bay Area, but Mike expresses it in a particularly intense fashion when he speaks about the Cummins QSK19 Tier 2 engines that they have recently installed in this practical craft. Asked what thinking went in to the engine selection, he replied, ?Not much thought was needed.

NY Water Taxis Out of Service

The U.S. Coast Guard put six of New York Water Taxi's nine ferries out of service last week after they failed spot safety inspections following an engine fire on one of the boats, says a Star-Ledger report. No one was hurt in the November 7 fire that was caused by a leak in the boat's oil filter. The reason for the failed inspections is not clear, but flaws in the engines’ cooling systems are suspected. The problem has forced the temporary shutdown of the taxi routes on the East River in New York and curtailed its service between Jersey City and Manhattan. Over the next several days, the company will make short-term repairs so the boats that failed the inspections can return to service, and during the winter, the company will install new engines in boats, according to the report.

Wärtsilä: Smokeless by Common Rail

There are two main ingredients to common rail fuel injection, one being the freedom to choose injection pressure and timing totally independently of the engine load. The other is computerized control, which makes it possible to consider several engine parameters and optimize the injection and combustion in each load situation.
