Dutch maritime equipment manufacturer Huisman said it has been awarded a contract by China Merchants Heavy Industry (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd for the delivery of a 250mt knuckle boom crane and a 500mt towing winch, to be installed on the upgraded 14,000kW large cruise rescue vessel for Nanhai Rescue Bureau, part of the Ministry of Transport of the People’s Republic of China.The 250mt knuckle boom crane will be outfitted with an active heave compensation system, allowing the crane to operate at water depths of up to 3,000 meters.

Offshore ship manager PROMAR recently marked a milestone with the sideways launch into the Danube of the first of its two Damen PSV 3300s on order. On delivery in February 2015, the Swiss company believes the 80-metre Mamola Reliance will give them a valuable competitive edge in the West African oil and gas market. On September 4, Damen Shipyards Galati launched the PSV 3300 Mamola Reliance at an official ceremony at the yard in Romania. Damen platform supply vessels have become a familiar sight on the Danube since Damen introduced its range of high specification designs up to 6,300 dwt.

Raytheon Anschütz announced the recent contract award for its SMARTBLUE maritime situational awareness system on board two vessels being built in South Korea for a major oil and gas company. The two vessels will operate on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. For each vessel, Raytheon Anschütz will provide two 12ft X-band radars integrated with AIS to a SMARTBLUE sensor management pack. The pack will correlate the incoming data from the sensors and provide information locally through an operator workstation located in the vessel’s central control room.

The European Union Council adopted a regulation yesterday to finance the actions of the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) in the field of response to marine pollution caused by ships and oil and gas installations in the years 2014-2020. Yesterday’s final adoption of the legislative act by the Council follows an agreement reached at first reading with the European Parliament earlier this year. The regulation will enter into force on the day after its publication in the EU Official Journal, which is expected to take place within the next few days. It will apply retroactively, from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2020. The financial envelope for EMSA's tasks for the period from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2020 will be EUR 160.5 million expressed in current prices.

Swiss company PROMAR has ordered two Platform Supply Vessels from Damen Shipyards Group as it looks to further expand the offshore fleet under its management in the next five years. The first Damen PSV 3300 will be delivered in February 2015, and the second in August of the same year. Commenting on why the company chose a Damen vessel, Olivier Meynis de Paulin, Chartering Supervisor said, “The PSV 3300is at the forefront of technology in terms of equipment, being modern and reliable. The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) announced that it is soliciting proposals for oil spill response research projects and will be investing up to $7 million to support these projects in 2014. In a Broad Agency Announcement released on the federal governments business opportunities website, FedBizOpps.gov, the bureau called for white papers focusing specifically on one of 10 topic areas for proposed research covering oil spill response operations on the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf.
