Caribbean Builds Oil Spill Response Capability

Developing and maintaining sound capability to respond effectively to marine pollution incidents involving oil, hazardous and noxious substances is a priority in the Caribbean, which is home to many vulnerable ecosystems.In response, the Curacao-based Regional Marine Pollution Emergency, Information and Training Center for the Caribbean (REMPEITC-Caribe) organized a trans-boundary oil spill response exercise in Suriname (27-28 August).The event brought together response managers from Suriname and their western neighbor Guyana to test their response plans and discuss international coordination in case of an oil spill.

BSEE Evaluates Oil Spill Response Exercise

Engineers and analysts from the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement's (BSEE) Gulf of Mexico and Alaska Regions recently evaluated Spill Response Operations Training and Equipment Verification exercises conducted by the Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company and its oil spill removal contractor at the Port of Morgan City, La. These exercises are required periodically to test spill response team training and resource availability, as part of each operator’s Oil Spill Response Plan.

USCG, Enbridge to Conduct Oil Spill Response Exercise

The Coast Guard 9th District, partner agencies, and Enbridge Energy Limited Partnership will conduct a full-scale oil spill response exercise in Indian River, Michigan, Wednesday. More than 200 participants from the Coast Guard; Enbridge; the Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet County Office of Emergency Management; Michigan Department of Environmental Quality; and the Environmental Protection Agency, will participate in the exercise, which simulates a breach in Enbridge’s Line 5 and a worst-case discharge of light crude oil.

US Coast Guard Outlines Arctic Priorities

U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Vice Adm. Peter Neffenger, the USCG’s Vice Commandant, presented the service’s 2014 Arctic priorities in support of the Coast Guard’s Arctic Strategy at an Arctic-shipping event sponsored by the Norwegian Embassy. The USCG’s Arctic Strategy is built around three strategic objectives: improve awareness, modernize governance and broaden partnerships in the Arctic region. “Where there are humans on the water, there is a demand for us to keep them safe and secure and ensure environmental responsibility,” said Neffenger.

Great Lakes Joint Security/Oil Spill Response Exercises

The Coast Guard, along with other federal, tribal, state and local agencies, is conducting a full-scale, anti-terrorism and oil spill response exercise in the Port of Duluth-Superior Aug. 28-29, 2013. In addition to Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Duluth, participants in Operation Peeking Duck will include maritime industry representatives from the states of Minnesota and Wisconsin, oil spill response agencies, as well as representatives from fire, emergency management and local law enforcement agencies.

Transas Presents its Crisis Management System in Malaysia

Transas Marine Pacific was invited to present its state-of-the-art Crisis Management System – PISCES - at one of Malaysia’s most important professional forums. A Marine Environmental Conservation Course under the auspices of the Malaysian Technical Co-operation Program was convened at country's premier maritime education and training institution - Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM) - from June 17 to 30, 2007. Twenty delegates from the Yemen, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Tonga, Timor & the Philippines represented a wide cross-section of government bodies. Coastguard personnel, biologists, researchers and ecological managers attended the event. Capt. Sundeep R Sequeira from Transas Marine Pacific led the presentation devoted to training in emergency situations using the example of Transas CMS.

Terrorism and Oil Response Drill Set for Port of Duluth

A multi-agency anti-terrorism and oil spill response drill will took place Wednesday and Thursday at the Naval Reserve Center. The United States Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Duluth, in coordination with the transportation industry, the States of Minnesota and Wisconsin, and local area police, fire and emergency management agencies will conduct a full scale anti-terrorism and oil spill response exercise at various pre-designated sites within the Duluth-Superior area. Another player in the exercise will be the Minnesota National Guard, they will mobilize vehicles and uniformed personnel. The exercise scenario is not based on any credible threat.

Houston Conducts Oil Spill Response Drill

Local, state and federal agencies are holding an oil spill response exercise at the Port of Houston, April 25-26. The exercise scenario simulates an explosion, fire onboard the ship Cape Trinity, and a 252,000 gallon oil spill in the turning basin of the Houston Ship Channel. The Cape Trinity is a Maritime Administration (MARAD) ship used for transporting military equipment and supplies overseas. The exercise, called Trinity 2006, will be used to train and test local responders and response plans. Agencies participating in the exercise include: U.S. Coast Guard, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Texas General Land Office, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration…
