CMM Orders Five OSRVs for Petrobras Work
Compagnie Maritime Monégasque SAM (CMM) has secured contracts with Petrobras Brazil to charter five newbuild fast oil spill response vessels (OSRVs) with a new fuel-efficient Damen axe-bow design. CMM has secured contracts with Petrobras to charter five newbuild fast oil spill response vessels using a new fuel-efficient Sea Axe design by Damen Shipyards Group, allowing the vessel to reach offshore oil platforms in half the time it takes traditional oil spill response vessels. Three vessels will start operating by end of December 2015 and two by end of June 2016.
Relocation of Oil Spill Response Vessel
The Marine Spill Response Corp. (MSRC), the country's largest oil spill response organization, will relocate one of its 210 ft. oil spill response vessels (OSRV) to Pascagoula, Miss. MSRC has 16 OSRVs positioned along the coastline of the continental U.S., Hawaii and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The relocated vessel will be strategically placed in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, and wil provide enhanced coverage in an area where increasing industry activity is occuring, particularly with respect to deepwater oil exploration and production. Rapid Oil Spill Response Vessel Launched
Western Canada Marine Response Corporation (WCMRC) launched their newest oil spill response vessel in Burrard Inlet. The boat, named after former employee George Penman, was christened at a private ceremony in Coal Harbour. The $4.5 million G.M. Penman is a 65-foot Ocean Class Oil Spill Response Vessel (OSRV) built by Rozema Boat Works in Washington State. It is only the fifth vessel of its kind in the world with sister vessels operating in Santa Barbara servicing the offshore production platforms off the California coast.
Marine Spill Response Corporation Extends Services
The Marine Spill Response Corporation (MSRC) is now providing upgraded oil spill response services in the mid-continent region of the U.S., including the Mississippi, Ohio, Arkansas and Missouri Rivers. Captain Ian Walker will represent the National Response Organization, which owns and operates a fleet of USCG certified Oil Spill Response Vessels, in this new endeavor.
Government and industry agree chemical dispersants can be combined with mechanical recovery to shorten clean up time and reduce the cost of cleaning up spills. Recent spills in the Gulf of Mexico have demonstrated the use of dispersants - when used early in the response of a spill - can help minimize the size of the spill. This enables oil spill response vessels to position mechanical recovery systems, to complete the removal process, while shortening the average cleanup time of a spill.
Sunken Vessel Discharging Oil in West Virginia
Towboat Gate City has sunk and is reportedly discharging oil near mile marker 8 on the Big Sandy River near Butler, W.Va. The vessel is discharging oil into the river “with a maximum potential of 5,000 gallons,” according to the U.S. Coast Guard, who said it received a report that the vessel had sunk at its mooring Wednesday morning. A Coast Guard pollution response team arrived on scene and is working with the oil spill response organization Weavertown to deploy boom and contain the oil and begin cleanup operations.

Wayward Rig 'Kulluk' Safely Arrives Kiliuda Bay
The 'Kulluk', towed by the 'AHTS Aiviq' has arrived in the safe harbor for assessment of any damage caused by its recent grounding. The Kulluk was refloated from its Ocean Bay position, off Sitkalidak Island, late Jan. 6, and will remain connected to its support vessels while it undergoes assessment in Kiliuda Bay, located about 30 miles north of Ocean Bay. Multi-purpose Deck Cargo Ship Launched
STX Turku Shipyard launches multipurpose deck cargo vessel STX Finland Oy Turku shipyard has launched a multipurpose deck cargo vessel built for Gaiamare Ltd. due delivery later in the year. With a LOA of 105.4 m and a breadth of 18.8 m the yet un-named vessel is described as being designed for multi-purpose uses, including wind-farm structures, as well as having the capability to act as an oil-spill response vessel. Strengthened to Ice Class 1A for Baltic Sea operation, the vessel will be capable of running on bio-fuels.
Oil Spill Reported in Mississippi River
Eight vessels with a combination of skimming packages, boom and absorbents have been deployed in response to an oil spill on the Mississippi River near Gramercy, La. The U.S. Coast Guard said it received a report Thursday morning from the National Response Center of stating oil was discharged from Petroleum Fuel and Terminal Mt. Airy during a transfer from the facility to a barge at mile marker 144.6 on the Mississippi River. Officials estimate that 2,500 gallons has been spilled. The Coast Guard conducted two overflights and deployed multiple teams to assess impacts. Oil spill response organizations OMI Environmental Solutions and Environmental Safety and Health are also responding, while the Center for Toxicology & Environmental Health LLC is conducting air monitoring.
Sigma S6 Oil Spill Response Radar Certified Compliant
Rutter Inc. (TSX: RUT) announced that Canadian based Rutter Technologies, a division of Rutter Inc. (TSX:RUT), has now received official notification from the Norwegian Clean Seas Association (NOFO) confirming that its Sigma S6 Oil Spill Response Radar is compliant with the NOFO standard. The NOFO Standard applies to the design of and the equipment carriage requirements for oil spill response vessels operating on the Norwegian Continental shelf. Carriage of oil spill detection radar having particular performance characteristics is one of these requirements. Representing the culmination of a two year development program, the successful implementation and testing of the automatic detection, outlining, and tracking algorithm was the final step in achieving NOFO compliance.
South China Shipyard Delivers Three Vessels
CIC Boluomiao Shipyard, Zhuhai, delivers 3 oil-spill response vessels to regional safety agency. Deputy general manager of Guangzhou Maritime Administration Bureau Lin zungui, deputy director of China Maritime Safety Administration Shen jixun, director Xiao weizhe and other managers of Boluomiao shipyard (CIC) attended the ceremony, which was hosted by secretary of the Party committee Zhang Kaiyi. The CIC Boluomiao Shipyard manager said that this delivery ceremony marked a new starting point for the shipyard.
EMSA Adds to Oil Recovery Network
The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) has strengthened its network of stand-by oil spill response vessels by finalising tenders for the Black Sea and North Sea. In the Black Sea, Romanian shipowner Grup Servicii Petroliere (GSP) will provide a pollution response capability using an offshore supply vessel which services the oilfields off the coast of Romania. In the North Sea, Belgian shipowner DC Industrial will provide a service based on two hopper dredgers which operate in this sea area.
20th Anniversary of Oil Spill Drill Program
Minerals Management Service (MMS) Director Liz Birnbaum today highlighted the 20th anniversary of the MMS Gulf of Mexico Region’s Unannounced Oil Spill Drill Program. The first unannounced drill with an offshore oil and gas operator in the Gulf was held on July 25, 1989. Since the first unannounced drill, an additional 273 drills have been held in the Gulf. The MMS designs the drill to exercise an oil and gas and pipeline operator’s Oil Spill Response Plan and evaluates its spill management team’s effectiveness in responding to a simulated spill event. “While preventing oil spills is our top priority throughout the offshore energy exploration and extraction process, operators must be ready to respond to a spill event,” Birnbaum said.

NRC, Resolve Expand Firefighting and Oil Spill Response
National Response Corporation (NRC) and Resolve Marine Group announce the expansion of their 1Call response coverage for all vessels trading in U.S. waters. The service offers tanker and nontank vessel owners and operators full, single-source coverage in compliance with latest U.S. Coast Guard regulations for Salvage and Marine Firefighting (SMFF), and Oil Spill Removal Organization (OSRO). This announcement reflects the U.S. Coast Guard’s final rule in the Nontank Vessel Response Plans and Other Response Plan Requirements published in the Federal Register. The rule requires owners or operators of vessels trading in U.S. waters to submit response plans naming OSRO and SMFF providers by January 30, 2014.
Guam Bolsters Oil Spill Recovery Capacity
Lamor recently commissioned itsLSC 4C Side Collecting Oil Skimming System for Guam’s Oil Spill Response Operations Company (OSROCO) and T&T Marine Salvage (T&T) making it the largest skimming system in the region. OSROCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cabras Marine, and T&T operate the skimming system as well as an array of small crafts, and other specialized response equipment. OSROCO, Cabras and T&T employees are trained and certified in accordance with the U.S. Federal Government’s oil spill response and safety standards.

Turku Shipyard Begins Production on Cargo Vessel
This morning, STX Finland’s Turku Shipyard began production of the multipurpose deck cargo vessel ordered by Oy Gaiamare Ab. NB 1379 is an environmentally-friendly specialized ship that will be delivered during spring 2012. The vessel has a length of approximately 105 meters and a width of approximately 19 meters, and it will provide work for about 300 persons during different stages of production. The production start-up at STX Turku Shipyard took place in a traditional manner. The event was attended by representatives of Oy Gaiamare Ab, STX Finland Oy and classification society Bureau Veritas, as well as by members of the press. The vessel is designed for transportation of demanding and heavy project cargo, such as offshore wind farm structures.
Japan: Little Chance Sanchi Oil Slick Reaches Its Coast
Japan sees little chance of the oil spill from a stricken Iranian tanker that sank on Sunday in the East China Sea reaching its shores, an official at the nation’s environment ministry said on Tuesday. The large tanker Sanchi (IMO:9356608) sank in the worst oil ship disaster in decades and produced a large oil slick, Chinese media and Japanese authorities said on Monday, as worries grew over damage to the marine ecosystem. The vessel’s crew of 30 Iranians and two Bangladeshis are all believed to have perished in the incident.
