Maritime Charity Launches New Ship to Promote Literacy and Education

An international maritime charity based in Germany has unveiled a new ship to promote literacy, education and cross-cultural cooperation across Southeast Asia.The vessel, Doulos Hope, is the fifth in GBA Ships’ fleet, recently launched following a technical refit and outfitting. VesselsValue's head cargo analyst, Olivia Watkins, has compiled a list of the world's top ship owning nations ranked by total fleet value.ChinaChina has moved up from second in January to firs place this time, owning a total of $191 billion in assets.China owns the largest number of containerships and, consequently, the recent surge in rates and values has moved them up the ranks to top spot in terms of fleet value. The increase in rates has also prompted an ordering spree across the container sector, as owners’ confidence in the market exploded.

ASCO Vessel Om Back in Operation

Azerbaijani shipping company ASCO said that overhaul of the towing and supplying vessel Om, owned by its offshore fleet, has been completed.Repair work was carried out at the Bibi-Heybat Shipyard, said Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company.During the repair, the main and auxiliary engines of the vessel, pumps, pipelines, living quarters, sanitary facilities and a dining room were overhauled.In addition, two out-of-date 1LA4 280-4SA90-Z type air compressors have been replaced with modern MAS GA 75 type air compressors.During the dock repair, the underwater and above water parts of the vessel were cleaned and painted, bottom-outboard fittings…

Signs of Recovery Seen in Asian MR Market

A new lease of life has been breathed into the ailing Medium Range (MR) tanker market in Asia. The MR market has been mired in a slump in recent months, with TC11 rates sinking to a multi-year low of $240,000 in April on the back of lower product exports from China and South Korea. The lumpsum rate for TC11 has since rebounded by $50,000 to $290,000 due an influx of activity in North Asia. Overall Chinese product exports touched a three-month low at 3.5 mmt in April, down by 22.6 percent m-o-m and 4.9 percent y-o-y which contributed significantly to the previous decline in MR rates.

DP World to Develop SEZ om Aktau, Kazakhstan

Global trade enabler DP World has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Kazakhstan for the development of a special economic zone in Aktau further boosting trade and logistics in the country. The MoU was signed by DP World Group Chairman and CEO, Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem and Governor of Mangistau, Akim Alik Aidarbayev in the presence of First Deputy Prime Minister, Askar Mamin. It builds on DP World’s present management advisory services contract with the Port of Aktau, Kazakhstan’s main cargo and bulk terminal on the Caspian Sea. DP World also provides similar services under a separate contract with Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), Kazakhstan’s national railway company for the development of the Khorgos Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and Inland Container Depot (ICD).

Oman Navy Receives Al Shamikh Vessel

The Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) organized a reception ceremony for Al Shamikh vessel, first of three vessels in the Khareef project for RNO. Sayyid Badr bin Saud bin Harib al-Busaidi, Minister Responsible for Defence Affairs sponsored the ceremony which was held at the Said bin Sultan Naval Base, where he, along with commanders, greeted the vessel upon its arrival at the Naval base to join other vessels of the RNO fleet. Sayyid al-Busaidi and Senior invitees toured the vessel facilities and had an idea about its different sections and equipment.

Omega Morgan, a 22-year-old specialized moving company, has its eyes on the aging bridges in the Pacific Northwest. Ocean Offshore's 'Island Pioneer' Chartered

Island Offshore has agreed a new 2-year contract for the SCV Island Pioneer with Ocean Mexicana SA de CV. The sub-sea construction vessel (SCV) has been working for OM since delivery in April 2006 and the new contract will run in direct continuation with the current contract. Island Pioneer is of P101 Ulstein Design and is equipped with DP II, a 140 ton offshore crane and accommodation for 87 persons. The vessel will perform a variety of subsea and light construction work during this charter.

Maersk Line Tops the Idlers League Table

Among container Carriers, Maersk Line currently has the largest number of vessels idle. A report by shipping analyst Alphaliner (Vol. 2012, Issue 46) reveals Maersk Line as the carrier with most vessels idled, currently 14 units with an aggregate capacity of 94,000 TEU. This development spearheads a recent surge in idling across the industry. “The idle containership fleet of above 500 TEU have swelled by 96,000 TEU in the last fortnight to reach 762,000 TEU or 4.7% of the current cellular fleet as at 5 November,” states the newsletter.

Charitable Aid Ship 'Logos Hope' Floats Out

OM Ships' 'Logos Hope' leaves the floating dry dock in Subic Bay, Philippines, after 90 days technical maintenance. Further works remain to be completed before the vessel can resume sailing, but Logos Hope’s refloating is a major step towards launching into the schedule of planned port visits for the remainder of 2012. The ship was in dock for annual maintenance, including servicing of lifeboats and cleaning and repainting the ship’s hull. Yet surveys done in the dock revealed urgent steel work needing attention, which caused significant delays.

Daewoo, Galfar Win $442m Oman Port Deal

has awarded Daewoo Shipbuilding and local firm Galfar GECS.OM a construction contract worth $442.2m at Duqm port, a Galfar official said. Marine Engineers Needed for Logos Hope

We need marine engineering officers and other maintenance engineers to continue operating and maintaining the vessel says OM Ships. The vessel is currently in dry dock in Subic Bay until early August and will be unable to sail after September without a longer-term chief engineer. Short-term chief engineers have filled the role on a temporary basis over recent months, but more consistent leadership is needed to oversee the operation of vessel systems and maintenance work on machinery.
