Lessons Learned from Maritime Accidents: NTSB’s Safer Seas Digest 2017 Released

Maritime accident investigation reports for collisions, explosions, capsizings and allisions and the lessons learned within those reports are detailed in the National Transportation Safety Board’s Safer Seas Digest 2017, released online Thursday.The publication is a compendium of 41 marine accident reports for accidents involving fishing, offshore supply, cargo, passenger, tanker, towing and government vessels. Lloyd's Register Aid for Seafarers

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has committed to make a donation to Sailors’ Society for every new registration to use their digital table that they receive at their stand during this year’s Posidonia. New registrants will not only benefit from the opportunity to explore content that will help them in meeting the sulphur 2020 challenge, but from the knowledge that their action will help fund the global maritime charity’s work supporting the world’s 1.6 million seafarers and their families. Digitisation Helps APM Terminals Pipavav

With more than 500 trucks per day passing through the gates at APM Terminals Pipavav, even the smallest efficiency improvement quickly adds up to 100s of hours saved per day. The terminal’s latest digital solution also offers significant environmental benefits, cost savings and improved safety. APM Terminals Pipavav have developed an online version of Form 13 (gate-in permits issued by terminals) required for each import/export container. Known as e-form 13, it will save close to 3 million kilometres of road trips and their associated carbon emissions each year. For customer this translates into time savings and fuel cost savings. With many of these kilometres often covered by couriers on motorbikes this also means significantly less risk of fatal road traffic accidents.

Maersk, Hamburg Sud Lead Reliability Rankings

Maersk Line and Hamburg Sud are ranked as the two most reliable container shipping carriers, according to performance rankings published in the new online version of the Carrier Performance Insight (http://cpi.drewry.co.uk) published by shipping consultancy Drewry. Maersk Line and Hamburg Süd were by far the most reliable carriers in the three months to October 2014 with overall on-time performances of 80.4% and 78.5% respectively. The next best performing carrier was Cosco at 69.9%…

Transas Releases New Version of FleetView Online

Transas Marine has released a new version of its FleetView Online web-based SSAS-tracking service. New FleetView Online version boasts improved user interface, object overlay and chart navigation controls. Object overlay on the charts have been updated to enhance visual appearance and improve user experience at lower scales. Previous toolbars have been removed and navigation controls added to the chart display to improve viewing ability. A 'Google' style map slider bar has been added allowing scaling through the charts in three ways: zoom slider, mouse wheel scroll or manual selection from lower task bar. Vessel information panel on the left of the display can be hidden, providing a full screen chart display for presentation views.

2013 Seaway Handbook Available

The Seaway Handbook is distributed via DVD and the Seaway website. Printed copies of the Seaway Handbook are no longer offered. A printed copy of the Seaway Handbook can be produced by printing the individual PDF files found on the web site (or found on the DVD). A special version of the Seaway General Plans in PDF format is provided to permit printing on letter sized (8.5 by 11 inch) paper.

North American ECA Distance Calculator Introduced by AtoBviaC

The imminent tightening of fuel control areas around the US is providing ship operators with a new set of challenges to face in the drive for cost effective operations. AtoBviaC has provided the answer to cost control during affected voyages with its new Port to Port – Online version of the BP Shipping Marine Distance Tables. “Our research has shown that it is rarely cost effective or practical to avoid these routes entirely,” said Captain Trevor Hall, Director of AtoBviaC. “It is, however, essential to accurately calculate in advance the impact on vessel operating costs and to identify where a slight adjustment of route will avoid unnecessary incursion into an ECA.

USCG – eNOAD Update

The USCG National Vessel Movement Center (NVMC) released the Electronic Notice of Arrival/Departure (eNOAD) User Guide . The guide is also available in an Online Version that includes interactive features and a searchable help system. The agency is using carrots to encourage ship owners and operators to convert to the electronic filing system. Masters, operators, and agents are also reminded that previously assigned Notice IDs or Globally Unique Identifiers (GUIDs) may only be used when submitting updated information regarding the particular arrival or departure for which the ID number was assigned. Use of such Notice ID or GUID for a different arrival/departure or for a different vessel will invalidate the NOAD and may result in delays and/or penalties. Source: HK Law
