DNV GL Invests in Public Blockchain Service Provider VeChain

DNV GL, the risk management and quality assurance company, has bought a stake in leading public blockchain service provider VeChain as it looks to use the technology to develop new digital assurance solutions. The acquisition builds on the strong relationship between the two firms and follows the recent launch of My Story, a blockchain enabled digital assurance product which gives a new level of insight into supplier and product information. DNV GL took the step to buy the minority stake as it recognises the growth potential in both the VeChain and the technology it is advancing.

ABB Closes Acquisition of APS Technology Group

Adds Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Gate Automation to its Crane and Harbor systems portfolio. ABB completed its acquisition of San Diego-based APS Technology Group (APS).  The acquisition adds optical character recognition (OCR) and gate automation capabilities to further improve safety, productivity and efficiency of port operations as containerized shipping grows worldwide. APS, an 11-year-old, 50-person company with offices in San Diego and Long Beach, Calif., will join ABB’s Crane and Harbor automation business. No major changes to staffing and product offerings are planned. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Seeing Forever: Lockhead Martin's Gyrocam

Lockheed Martin recently completed successful demonstrations of its Gyrocam 15-inch Dual Sensor & 15-inch Triple Sensor to the Navy. The demonstration was conducted as part of a cooperative research and development effort with the Stiletto Maritime Demonstration Program. That program was established to help accelerate the delivery of innovative maritime technologies across all armed services. During the demonstration in Virginia Beach, Va., U.S. Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) sailors used the 15-inch gyro-stabilized optical sensors in both day and night exercises. After successfully tracking items of interest and acquiring on-the-move, high-resolution electro-optical and thermal video, end-users provided immediate feedback on the technology.

Prysmian Opens Plant in Romania

Prysmian announced the opening of a new plant for the production of optical fiber cable in Slatina, Romania. The Slatina factory celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, having started its manufacturing activity in 1973 with production of energy cables, while in 2009 it introduced the first module for the production of optical fiber cables. The factory boasts a number of quality certifications such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and IMQ, and the new plant will triple its production, from 500,000 kilometers up to 1.5 million kilometres of cables per year, with the potential of reaching 3 million. The Slatina plant stretches across almost 100.000 square meters, with a covered area of around 42,000 square meters.

Peel Ports Invests in AutoGate System at Liverpool

Peel Ports have awarded a ÂŁ5.5 million contract to Kalmar Global and APS Technology to install smart AutoGates technology at its ÂŁ300m deep-water expansion project at the Port of Liverpool (example Baltimore)

Peel Ports Group has committed £5.5 million to introducing advanced infrastructure and AutoGates technology as part of its ongoing investment at the Port of Liverpool. With the £300 million deepwater Liverpool2 expansion due to be open next year, this latest development is set to strengthen the port-side logistics required to support increased cargo volume. At present, a manual system is currently in place, requiring drivers to register at a site office, where they complete a form and wait for clearance before entering.

Navy Space-Based Orbital Debris Sensor Gets Patent

Small orbital debris objects can threaten vital space-based assets. The Navy's patented compact debris detection device can detect debris in near real-time and provide essential trajectory data for future use. The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Geospace Science and Technology Branch, received U.S. patent (#8976245), March 10, for the Optical Orbital Debris Spotter - a compact, low power, low cost, local space debris detection concept that can be integrated into larger satellite designs, or flown independently on-board nano-satellite platforms. Man-made debris orbiting the Earth continues to increase at an alarming rate - with objects smaller than one centimeter (cm) exceeding 100 million.

Using Tech to Fight Piracy on the Open Sea

With maritime piracy seen on the rise once again, the shipping industry now looks to redouble its efforts to prevent these dangerous and costly attacks. Though piracy had been on a steep decline since 2010 due to increased security efforts and precautions taken aboard ships, The State of Maritime Policy Report 2016 released last month by Oceans Beyond Piracy (OBP) finds that there has been decreased vigilance by the shipping community during the past few years, including hiring smaller private security teams and taking less security measures aboard ships. Now halfway through 2017 there have already been two hijackings including a tanker and a commercial ship, as Somali pirates resumed attacks on ships and resorted to old tactics of ransoming crew for money.

Unmanned Aircraft Makes USCG Icebreaker Landing

Coast Guard and National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration researchers report the successful landing of an unmanned aircraft system on the flight deck of Coast Guard Cutter 'Healy', marking the first time a UAS has completed a take-off and landing aboard a Coast Guard icebreaker. UAS operators from AeroVironment, designers of the Puma All Environment UAS, working alongside researchers from the Coast Guard Research and Development Center and NOAA made necessary adjustments following several unsuccessful attempts to land the Puma AE on the icebreaker’s flight deck.

Kelvin Hughes is displaying its new combined camera and radar Single Mast Solution (SMS) at SMM 2014 in Hamburg from September 9-12. The company is also demonstrating the associated CxEye display software which provides intuitive command and control for the system. Responding to the market need for a rapidly deployable, all-weather, port and harbor security radar and multi-optioned electro-optical system, Kelvin Hughes has utilized its SharpEye X-band solid state surveillance radar technology to develop the Single Mast Solution.

Container ID Software for Brazil Terminal Ordered from APS Technology

APS Technology Group, Inc., a leading provider of optical character recognition (OCR) and automation technology solutions for marine and intermodal container terminals, announced Terminal de Conteineres de Paranagua  (TCP), the third largest container terminal in Brazil, has chosen APS Technology for gate OCR and rail OCR solutions at its terminal. This is the first on-dock rail OCR solution to be installed in South America. TCP is implementing the APS Automated Gate System OCR solution and rail OCR solution to boost efficiency and eliminate congestion. The solution will automate the container identification process at the gate and rail entry and exit points with the collection of high-resolution images.

Revival of Training Capability

A 20-foot shipping container on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, helps the Australian Navy run one of the world’s few remaining shore-to-sea live firing training sites. Since 1959, West Head Gunnery Range which occupies an area of 16 hectares has provided the Royal Australian Navy with live gunnery training for close range and medium calibre shipborne weapon systems, navigation radar and miscellaneous communications and support equipment. One of the many systems used for safety during live firings and also training is the Electro-Optical Tracking System.

A new U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) report describes how advanced optical sensor technology is being used in the Mississippi River basin to accurately track the nitrate pulse to the Gulf of Mexico. Excessive springtime nitrate runoff from agricultural land and other sources in the Mississippi drainage flows into the Mississippi River and downstream to the Gulf of Mexico. This excess nitrate contributes to the Gulf of Mexico hypoxic zone, an area with low oxygen known commonly as the "dead zone." Infrared Systems Protect UK Navy Ships at Sea

General Dynamics Upgrades RVSS for CPB

General Dynamics successfully completed the initial field deployment and test of the Remote Video Surveillance System (RVSS) upgrade for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Customs and Border Protection (CBP). This test demonstrated many technical capabilities of the RVSS system and is a key program milestone in its deployment schedule. U.S. Border Patrol agents are currently operating the RVSS in Nogales, Ariz., and CBP has also initiated deployments in both Naco and Douglas, Ariz.

SEA Wins $5.4m Contract

Systems Engineering Associates Corp. (SEA CORP) has won a $5.4m contract to help replace traditional periscopes on Navy submarines with electro-optical technology. The contract calls for SEA CORP to provide support for Photonics Imaging Systems programs at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport. The work will include program management, administrative support, engineering analysis, problem reporting and correction and integrated logistics support for systems using electro-optic technology that will replace the traditional optical periscopes.
