The U.S. maritime industry publicly recognized the merchant mariners responsible for safe ship operations at the Annual Safety Awards Luncheon held on June 7, 2017. In all, 211 people, representing 53 companies and their subsidiaries attended the annual industry-sponsored event where 1,582 vessels with 10,604 cumulative years of accident free operation were recognized. Since 1958, the Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) has also sponsored the Safety Achievement Award program which recognizes outstanding feats of safety that contribute to saving a life, a ship or other property.

PC Maritime has secured a contract to supply, install and commission dual Navmaster ECDIS on 39 tankers owned by Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG) and managed by V.Ships UK. The contract is to be completed and all crew trained and certified by the end of 2016. To have this number of vessels fully equipped by the end of 2016 requires installation not only during dry docking periods but also within OSG’s trading schedules. Acting Maritime Administrator, Paul “Chip” Jaenichen will close the “Safety at Sea” Seminar being hosted by North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) at the National Press Club from 2:30-6:00pm. NAMEPA’s seminar will join industry and governmental leaders as they discuss issues of the day surrounding Safety at Sea. The seminar is designed to highlight both best practices and opportunities for improvement. Immediately following the “Safety at Sea” seminar is the AMVER Awards Dinner where over 150 companies will be recognized for their participation in the United States Coast Guard’s (USCG) Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue (AMVER) system.

ExxonMobil Corp has agreed to renew its charter agreement for the 337,000-barrel 'Overseas Cascade' at an unprecedented $110,000 a day, nearly a 50 percent increase from its previous rate for the same ship this summer, reports Reuters, citing shipping sources. The century-old Jones Act, explains Reuters, requires all vessels operating between U.S. ports to be U.S.-built, U.S.-owned and U.S.-crewed in order to protect the U.S. commercial maritime industry. VT Halter Marine, a company of VT Systems, announced that it has been awarded a second contract from OSG Ship Management, Inc. (OSG) to undertake the outfitting and commissioning of a 350,000 barrel articulated tug barge unit (ATB). Work for this ATB will commence in November 2009 and is expected to complete by mid 2010. VT Halter Marine was contracted in April this year by OSG to undertake similar work on another 350,000 barrel ATB, expected to be delivered by the end of this year. Measuring 655 ft by 104.9 ft, these ATBs will be the largest ever built by VT Halter Marine. These state-of-the-art ATBs will be used to perform lightering services and will be equipped with specialized equipment to meet stringent vapor balancing regulations in the Delaware Bay, where the vessels will trade.

Amsterdam-based Seaarland Shipping Management and New York-based Overseas Shipholding Group have set up Suezmax International, a commercial pool which will initially operate eight tankers. The Suezmax International Pool is co-managed by in and OSG Ship Management Inc. in . OSG and Seaarland have committed eight ships to the pool so far: the Overseas London, Overseas Newcastle, Genmar Hope, Elisewin, and four newbuildings due for delivery from Nantong Rongsheng Shipbuilding, during  2009. Seaarland has also ordered three 165,000 dwt suezmax tankers on May 30, 2008 to be built at Hyundai Heavy Industries, for delivery in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarter 2011. The intention is to commit these ships to the new pool. The Suezmax International pool will have two chartering offices.

Overseas Shipholding Group, Inc. announced that Henry Flinter was appointed Vice President, Corporate Finance of OSG Ship Management, Inc., a newly created position reporting to Myles Itkin, Chief Financial Officer. Flinter will have oversight of treasury, corporate finance and capital market transactions and has nearly 20 years' experience in senior finance and accounting positions. He joined OSG in 2002 as Assistant Vice President, Accounting and in January 2005 was promoted to Vice President, Accounting.

The Alumni Association, SUNY Maritime College, will host its annual Awards Night on Thursday, March 27 at the New York Athletic Club in New York City. Captain Robert E. Johnston, Class of 1969, has been selected as the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year. As you know, the Association presents this award to an alumnus who has achieved outstanding success in his/her career as well as service to their industry, country and alma mater. Capt. Johnston is the executive vice President of OSG Ship Management, Inc. He joined OSG in June of 1969 as a Third Mate. In 1974, he assumed command of a 38,000-ton tanker. His seagoing experience was gained on crude oil and product tankers in all capacities from Third Mate to Master.
