UK's Cameron to Discuss Houthi Attacks on Shipping on Oman Visit

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron will travel to Oman on Tuesday where he is expected to call for stability over ongoing Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and de-escalating of tensions in the Middle East, the foreign office said on Tuesday.Cameron, on his fourth visit to the Middle East, will travel to Oman to meet his counterpart Badr Albusaidi to discuss how to diminish tensions across the region.The Houthi attacks on international shipping lines in the Red Sea will be a major focus of his discussions…

SafeMed ll BWT Training Course Held in Malta

Methods of reducing environmental risks of invasive alien species transferred through ships’ ballast water in the Mediterranean Sea were discussed during a SafeMed II Project training course held in Malta. Training and instruction emphasised the effective implementation of the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM Convention). Although ballast water enhances the safety and efficiency of shipping operations, when not properly managed, this widespread maritime practice leads to risks of displacing marine species all over the world.

Dutch Company To Build Harbor

Dutch construction group Ballast Nedam won a $63.83 million contract to build a harbor in the Gaza area. The construction will be financed by the Dutch and the French government, the Palestinian Authority and the European Investmentbank. The construction activities, in cooperation with French construction firm Spie Batignolles, are expected to take about 25 months.

IMO Launches SAFEMED Project

The IMO issued a News Release stating that it and other stakeholders have launched the SAFEMED project for Euro-Mediterranean Cooperation on Maritime Safety and Prevention of Pollution from Ships. The project, funded by the EU, will focus on flag state implementation and monitoring of classification societies; safety of navigation and traffic monitoring; protection of the marine environment; human element issues; and security of ships and port facilities. The project will be implemented in ten Mediterranean Partner countries: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, the Palestinian Authority, Syria, Tunisia, and Turkey. Source: HK Law
