Palumbo Buys Mondomarine

Italian yard Palumbo Group has acquired the former Mondomarine facility in Savona on an initial six-month lease, reports local media. "By leasing the business unit of the Savona shipyard, Palumbo Group will grant the restart of the shipyard's activities, along with the immediate reinstatement of nine employees." Palumbo Group explained in a statement. The deal saves 9 jobs from the Italian shipyard that went into liquidation towards the end of 2017, which put a total of 57 jobs at risk. Before its liquidation, Mondomarine was a key player in the Italian yacht market and built more than 30 yachts over a 25-year period. Its biggest asset is the ability to construct yachts up to 70 metres.

ISS Acquisition of Merkez Strengthens Turkey Cruise Capability

Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS), a maritime services provider, has acquired the Turkish cruise agency specialist Merkez Deniz Acenteligi ve Ticaret A.S (Merkez). Merkez is one of the most established agency houses in the Turkish shipping community and it is today a market-leading cruise sector specialist with offices in the major cruise ports of Istanbul and Kusadasi. ISS already has a strong existing presence in Turkey and this acquisition will assist the further development and growth of its business at an exciting period of development in this country. Turkey continues to attract more passengers year on year as the government actively promotes the country as a cruise destination. With new cruise terminals and airport expansion planned, these numbers are expected to continue to grow.

Global Entities Convene for Maritime Career Day

The Malta Maritime Careers Day will see the participation of three eminent international entities in its first year of staging. These will be ICOMIA - the International Council of Marine Industry Associations, SNAME - The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers - based in Virginia, U.S. and the IMO International Maritime Law Institute. The objective of the Malta Maritime Careers Day is to bring together professionals, educators and leading industry players to discuss and encourage the improvement in academic and practical training for the common benefit of interested students, the industry in general and Malta’s economic sustainability. Another primary aim of the event is to increase visibility among students and parents of the career opportunities in this industry.
