MPE Interiors Complete OSV Outfitting

Liverpool (Birkenhead) UK-based maritime sector contractor MPE Interiors says it has completed an outfitting contract for North East shipyard operator UK Docks, aboard the offshore support vessel 'Ocean Tay'. MPE carried out the refurbishment works at  Wear Dock & Engineering in Sunderland as part of a conversion to the Ocean Tay, a 63-m (207-ft) Class A Emergency Response and Rescue Vessel (ERRV), operated by Atlantic Offshore Rescue Ltd. Panel Systems Sees Rise in Thermhex Demand

Panel Systems, a U.K. supplier of bespoke sandwich panels has seen a huge surge in demand for Thermhex, an innovative polypropylene honeycomb material which was launched into the U.K. market at the beginning of 2013. The company, which is the U.K. distributor for the product, has secured a series of major contract wins for Thermhex for applications in the commercial vehicle and caravan industry where the material offers substantial weight savings over traditional materials such as plywood. The low density of Thermhex results in a weight saving of over 85% on a like for like thickness of plywood. The new material has recently received official approval from Germanischer Lloyd, the independent advisory body for the maritime industry, for use in shipbuilding.

Hutchison Set to Retire After 42 Years

John C. G. Hutchison closes a 42 year career at this year’s Workboat Show in New Orleans. Born in Philly on April Fool’s Day 1941, John Hutchison played collegiate golf at Duke University and Moravian College, and coached the golf team at Lehigh University before being drafted in 1966. A Viet Nam vet, 2nd LT, Infantry Branch, John returned home in 1970 and worked at the Bethlehem Steel Corporate Office in Bethlehem, PA, and other Bethlehem offices in Burns Harbor IN, Johnstown PA, and Sparrows Pt., MD.

NSRP and SNAME Will Co-Sponsor Workshop

NSRP/SNAME Ship Production Panels are co-sponsoring the free workshop Lean Above the Shop Floor on April 18-19 in Williamsburg, Va. Speakers from Caterpillar and the shipbuilding industry will discuss the immediate and long-term impact of Lean principles Six Sigma and Five S on the business enterprise and data systems that drive production operations.
