RINA Opens Greek Fleet Operation Center
Classification society RINA said it has opened its Fleet Operating Center (FOC) in newly expanded offices in Piraeus. RINA to Start Classifying Iranian Ships in Weeks
Italy's RINA expects to start verifying safety and environmental standards for Iranian ships including oil tankers in a matter of weeks, the classification society said, stealing a lead on rivals as business interest in Iran heats up. Without verification from such bodies, ships are unable to call at international ports or secure insurance. RINA said it had signed an agreement this week with Iran's Asia Classification Society, enabling the Genoa-headquartered group to provide services to Iranian shipping firms. Under Iranian regulations, international players have to team up with local counterparts when providing cover for Iranian flagged vessels.
RINA Launches Competence Management System Certification
International classification society RINA Services has launched a new Competence Management System certification which it says helps ship owners and managers to raise the skill levels of their crews and shore staff above the basic statutory requirements. Italy-based PB Tankers is the first company to benefit from the new voluntary certification. RINAâs Competence Management System guides shipowners and managers to develop and maintain high level targeted skills in their shipsâ crews and operational shore staff. Its certification benefits them by proving to charterers, authorities, financiers and insurers that the company has a system for ensuring that its crews have the skills and competence required to operate safely and efficiently in todayâs complex marine environment.
From Fire to Emissions, Ferry Debates Heat Up
Firefighting led a stream of topical debate at trade association Interferryâs 40th annual conference in Copenhagen last week â but not before a record 342 delegates came under fire from a leading Green politician claiming that âshipping is currently one of the unaddressed areas of air pollutionâ. Michael Cramer, German chair of the European Parliamentâs transport and tourism committee, delivered a stinging opening address demanding that the ferry and shipping sectors become more environmentally sustainable. He said âmost vessels are like hazardous waste incinerators because they burn heavy fuel oil which should be processed as highly toxic waste but is usually exhaled without sufficient filteringâ.
New Ferry Safety Initiative from RINA
Italy-based classification society RINA informs it has launched a ferry safety initiative. The Asset Integrity Management scheme for ro-pax ferries covers fire risk mitigation, single-failure risk assessment, enhanced planned maintenance and condition-based monitoring and also food and bacteriological risk management. Paolo Moretti, General Manager Marine, RINA Services, said, âWith over 300 ferries in our class we are the world leaders in ro-pax ferry safety. That gives us two things. One is a lot of experience and feedback from vessels in service, the other is a sense of responsibility.
RINA Tackles Ocean Noise Pollution
International classification society RINA has acted to tackle noise pollution of the seas by developing a voluntary notation which will apply to vessels for which efforts have been made to mitigate underwater noise. Paolo Moretti, Head of the Marine Business Line, RINA Services, said, âNoise is the new pollution. The international community has raised concern that the underwater noise generated by commercial shipping may have negative consequences on marine life, especially marine mammals. IMO has recently published MEPC Circ. 833 âGuidelines For The Reduction Of Underwater Noise From Commercial Shipping To Address Adverse Impacts On Marine Lifeâ which sets out advice on design and operational solutions that may be adopted to reduce underwater radiated noise.
Cruise Ship Center of Excellence Launched
Classification society RINA Group has grouped all its experts on cruise vessels under a new Cruise Ships Center of Excellence. The aim is to deliver improved service to operators, designers and builders of cruise vessels, and to foster innovation in new services internally. âWe have a lot of expertise around the group which can benefit cruise ship owners. Our recent internal reorganization has given us the chance to harness that expertise more effectively," said Paolo Moretti, General Manager, Business Line Marine, RINA Group.
RINA and IB Partner for Ship Management Software Suite
