Maritime Technology Firms NAVTOR and Voyager Worldwide Set to Merge

First YM Efficiency Containers Retrieved

Work is underway to retrieve dozens of containers lost from a containership off the coast of Australia, with the first boxes raised to the surface this week. The first container was recovered from the seafloor on Monday using a hydraulic crane and rigging, remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROV) and a specially manufactured steel basket, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said. Epic Gas Switches to GNS and Voyager

GNS, the maritime technology company, has been awarded the contract to supply the fleet of Singapore-based Epic Gas Ship Management and its shore-based marine team with a complete navigation solution.GNS won the contract following a competitive tender during which Epic Gas ran extensive sea and shore-based trials over a six-month period evaluating solutions from three vendors. Key evaluation criteria were intuitiveness of the software and simplicity of the end-to-end service, which includes everything from route planning and monitoring through to the efficient transfer of ENCs to ECDIS for voyage execution.Capt. SOL Adds Finnish Port of Pietarsaari

Swedish shipping company Swedish Orient Lines (SOL) announced  that it will add the port of Pietarsaari/Jakobstad (Finland) to its liner network with one weekly call using its vessels Thuleland and Tundraland.The service will offer direct port calls to Lübeck (Germany), Zeebrugge (Belgium) and Tilbury (UK). Barge-Rail Service on Upper Columbia, Snake Rivers

Container barge service is back on the upper Columbia and Snake rivers.The Up river Container Barge-Rail Shuttle will help importers and exporters in eastern Washington, Oregon and Idaho move containerized agricultural products to markets in Asia. An informal partnership including Northwest Container Service, Tidewater Barge and the ports of Morrow, Lewiston and Portland helped facilitate the return of this service. The first barge is currently loading at the Port of Lewiston this week and expected to get underway Thursday. The new service would address key issues driving up the cost of transportation in the wake of losing direct carrier service at Terminal 6 in Portland earlier this year— loss of barge service, container availability and cost of trucking to Puget Sound ports.

Wärtsilä's' Scrubber Systems for Dutch RoRo Vessels

Royal Wagenborg, the Dutch ship owner and operator, has ordered Wärtsilä scrubber systems to clean the exhaust emissions from two of its RoRo carriers, the 'Balticborg' and 'Bothniaborg'. These will be Wärtsilä's first deliveries of its scrubber systems to Royal Wagenborg. The contract was signed in March. "We have enjoyed a successful business relationship with Wärtsilä for many years and have selected Wärtsilä solutions for many vessels in our fleet. This relationship was one of the reasons that we decided that Wärtsilä would be the supplier for these scrubber systems," according to Egbert Vuursteen, CEO of Royal Wagenborg. Grounded Cargo Ship Leaks Oil

A major recovery operation has been launched to recover a leaking cargo ship which ran aground on Scotland's west coast. Salvage vessels were called to Kilchoan near Ardnamurchan Point after the Lysblink Seaways became stranded at around 2am on Wednesday. No one was injured in the stranding, but oil had begun to leak from the Seaways. The DFDS general cargo ship that ran aground off Scotland has self-refloated, the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said. “Shortly before 9pm on Thursday the grounded vessel Lysblink Seaways self-floated from the foreshore at Kilchoan,” it confirmed. A team from Svitzer Salvage is currently on board the vessel conducting a detailed damage assessment and two tugs are at the scene to support the salvage operation, MCA said.

Finnlines Buys 16.6% Of Transfennica

Finnlines said it had bought forest industry group Stora Enso's 16.6 percent stake in shipping company Transfennica for an undisclosed sum. Finnlines said it and its subsidiaries at the same time had made a long-term cooperation agreement with Stora Enso on the transportation of its paper products from Finland to the rest of Europe. Transfennica is a shipping company owned by the Finnish paper industry and operates some 20 RoRo vessels, it said.
