P&O Maritime to Convert Multi-carrying Vessel to Cable Layer

Dubai-based P&O Maritime Logistics announced plans to convert one of its multi-carrying vessels (MCV) into a cable laying vessel (CLV).Set to start operations in the third quarter of 2024, the newly converted vessel will be equipped with a battery system, as well as a low fuel consumption propulsion layout for green methanol fuel.P&O Maritime Logistics, a DP World company, anticipates that one of the main use of the vessel will be to connect offshore wind farms with the mainland.The…

Llebroc Honored with Award

Llebroc Industries was recognized with the 2019 Fabrication Excellence Awards for design excellence in marine fabric applications, that took place in January at the 2019 Marine Fabricators Conference, at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA.Llebroc Industries received an Award of Excellence and an Award of Distinction Interior for it’s project titled Llebroc Industries – SX Helm Chair with Tidal Wave Technology. The project was recognized in the competition’s Marine Exterior Upholstery category.MFA received a total of 90 entries submitted in 9 categories in this year’s competition. Winners were selected based on complexity, design, workmanship, uniqueness and function.

YANMAR Cruises Into Alaska with Power to Spare

YANMAR only recently arrived in the Pacific Northwest with its mechanical 6AYAM-ET diesel engine. It looks like they are here to stay. In November of last year, YANMAR America and its guests officially opened the YANMAR EVO//CENTER in Acworth, Ga. Situated on 50-plus acres of land in Cherokee County, the new 50,000 square foot facility features six state-of-the-art product training labs with classroom and hands-on space, three classrooms, multiple meeting rooms, office space, a 250-seat auditorium, and myriad other amenities and features. The event was probably the most recent, visible manifestation of YANMAR’s steady march into the North American markets.

Criminal Gangs Active in Gulf of Guinea

There is very little piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, but criminal gangs are operating widely. Most attacks in West African waters are part of a long running criminal program of cargo theft or kidnapping and ransom inside territorial waters, and not piracy said maritime security company GoAGT. Nick Davis, CEO of GoAGT said, “The growing problem in West Africa is criminality and it is very well organized. Criminal gangs board ships, take them over, and then move them to a safe area where the cargo can be stolen. Recently the MT Kerala disappeared, its cargo was stolen and then it reappeared.

International design, engineering and risk management consultancy BMT Surveys, have launched a new app which will provide mobile access to its CargoHandbook database. The app is now available as a free download for both Android and iOS users in the App Store (iOS) and Play Store (Android). CargoHandbook is the world’s largest online database for cargo transportation in the marine industry. As a rich source of knowledge, BMT Surveys aims to provide and share information on cargo transportation with the market and help to reduce the number of cargo incidents and claims that occur.

Rapp Hydema Hauls in the Research Vessel Market

Rapp Hydema has been supplying deck machinery to research vessels since 1977, but this global market recently became especially significant for the group. In 2002, in what would be a watershed project, Rapp Hydema was chosen to outfit the NOAA Fishery Survey Vessel (FSV) Oscar Dyson class of vessels. The first four ships in the class were being constructed at VT Halter Marine Shipyard. “That NOAA research vessel contract provided us with excellent exposure,” said Johann Sigurjonsson, President of Rapp Hydema U.S.

Oil Markets Adjust to Japan’s Disaster

Singapore, 16 March  — The 11 March earthquake and tsunami in Japan, and the continuing nuclear crisis that they triggered, will have significant repercussions in global energy markets, according to international energy price reporting agency Argus. Japan will rely more on oil for power generation at least until the end of this year, altering regional balances for some grades of crude and providing a large boost in demand for low-sulphur fuel oil (LSFO). And it will seek additional LNG supplies. The quake and tsunami knocked nuclear plants with 11GW of generating capacity off line, and another 1.1GW nuclear plant was shut for maintenance at the time, leaving 25pc of Japan's nuclear capacity shut after the disaster.

NACE Corrosion 2010 Workshop, Selling to DOD

NACE International, the corrosion society, will offer a special workshop free to all attendees at Corrosion 2010 that is specifically designed to help private industry sell to the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). Tribon Offers Upgraded V8.0

From Thursday March 4, the Internet-based service Tribon.com is upgraded with release 8.0. Tribon.com incorporates a Global Database of shipbuilding components and equipment. Shipbuilders can access, download and integrate accurate product information directly into their design. The possibilities for communicating between shipyards and suppliers have been further enhanced by the addition of a new set of functions. Shipyard users can now easily contact the supplier regarding a particular product, requesting a confirmation of the validity of the data at the time when a download takes place.

PyroGenisis' Compact Plasma Waste Elimination System is positioned as the most space-conscious solution for onboard ships, and in Miami at Cruise Shipping the company was touting its installation onboard Carnival Cruise Lines M/S Fantasy since October 2003. The system occupies a surface of only 700 sq. ft. and is located on a single deck of the ship, and is capable of treating a variety of waste generated onboard, including cardboard, food, food contaminated waste (USDA), plastics and cabin waste. Sludge oil can also be treated by the system. PyroGenesis is in negotiation with Carnival for additional installations. The technology was developed the technology under contract to the US Navy, and is just now making its commercial maritime debut.
