VT Halter Marine To Construct Carrier For Pasha Hawaii

VT Halter Marine Inc., has signed a contract with Pasha Hawaii Transport Lines, valued at approximately $47 million, to complete the construction of their car carrier, Jean Anne. VT Halter Marine expects to complete and deliver the vessel in the fourth quarter of 2004. The vessel is the first Pure Car Truck Carrier (PCTC) to be built in the United States. Constructed for the Jones Act trade, it will operate between U.S. Hawaii. Measuring 579 ft. overall, with a beam of 102 ft. FGH Finalizes $82 Million in New Contracts

Friede Goldman Halter, Inc. (FGH) finalized contracts totaling $82 million. The contracts call for the construction of a $70 million cargo vessel and the design and construction of 22 shipboard cargo cranes. Halter Marine, Inc., the vessel construction division of FGH, will build a $70 million car carrier for Pasha Hawaii Transport Lines. The 579-ft. Pure Truck Car Carrier will transport more than 4,000 automobiles between destinations on the Pacific coast. Pasha Hawaii Transport Lines is a joint venture between The Pasha Group and Van Ommeren Shipping USA, which will operate the vessel. The ship's Jones Act compliance will enable it to operate between U.S. West Coast ports and Hawaii as well as serve foreign ports.

Hearing on Vessel Rebuilding

The Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure conducted a hearing on Rebuilding Vessels under the Jones Act. The law requires, for vessels eligible to engage in the coastwise trade, that any rebuilding, including the construction of any major component of the hull or superstructure, be done in the . Committee Chair James Oberstar (D-MN) noted the need for consistency in application of the rebuild regulations. Subcommittee Chair Elijah Cummings (D-MD) expressed concern about the lack of transparency in the rebuild determination process. Halter Lays Keel For PCTC

Pasha Hawaii Transport Lines (PHTL), which is building a Jones Act Pure Car and Truck Carrier, at Halter Marine, reported that an important step in the creation of the ship - the keel laying - had taken place at Halter Marine. Crowley to Manage 4 Jones Act Ships for Pasha

Crowley Maritime Corp.’s ship management group has been awarded a new contract with Sunrise Operations LLC, a subsidiary of The Pasha Group, of San Rafael, Calif., for the operation, crewing and maintenance of four Jones Act ships operating between the U.S. West Coast and Hawaii. The news follows the recent announcement that Pasha Hawaii, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Pasha Group, a family-owned global logistics company, will assume operations for all of Horizon Lines’ Hawaii business, including these four U.S.-flagged containerships.

Hawaii Opposes California Container Tax

The California state legislature is considering a new tax on shipping containers that would cost an estimated $34m a year to Hawaii shippers, The Pacific Business Journal reported. More than 80 percent of goods consumed in Hawaii are produced elsewhere and shipped to the islands, and 90 percent of those are shipped through the California ports of Oakland and Long Beach on the ships of Matson Navigation Co., Horizon Lines and Pasha Hawaii Transport. California State Senate Bill 974 would impose a $30 fee per TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit, the standard measure of maritime shipping capacity) on every cargo container traveling between California and Hawaii. Most cargo containers are at two TEUs so it amounts to a $60 container fee in most cases.

Hawaii Stevedores Commits Kapalama Container Terminal

Honolulu-based Hawaii Stevedores, Inc. has received confirmation from Hawaii State Department of Transportation (HDOT) that, together with the state, Hawaii Stevedores will continue the joint development of the Kapalama Container Terminal (KCT). The state has confirmed its commitment for Hawaii Stevedores to lease the new 84-acre, state-of-the-art KCT, which will be constructed at the former Kapalama Military Reserve Terminal at Sand Island in Honolulu, as part of the state’s $448 million harbors modernization plan.

Pasha Hawaii to Build Second Vessel

Honolulu-based Pasha Hawaii announced the signing of a contract with VT Halter Marine, Pascagoula, MS, for the construction of a ship to enter the Hawaii/Mainland trade lane. The ship’s base price is $144m and is estimated to deliver in the fall of 2013. Pasha Hawaii is currently negotiating with several sources for financing. The new ship represents the second vessel to join Pasha Hawaii’s fleet, and will allow the company to provide weekly service between the West Coast and Hawaii. The company also signed an option agreement for the construction of a third vessel with a base price of $137m. This will be the second Roll-On/Roll-Off Car Truck Carrier built by VT Halter for Pasha Hawaii based on a proven design by the Uljanik Shipyard, Croatia.

Judicial Decision on M/V Mokihana Rebuild

On December 4, 2009, a federal district court in Va. entered judgment in favor of the U.S. Coast Guard and Matson Navigation Company, Inc. in a long-running vessel foreign rebuild case. Winston & Strawn LLP represented Matson. The Shipbuilders Council of America, Inc. and Pasha Hawaii Transport Lines LLC sued the Coast Guard initially in November 2006 seeking to disqualify the M/V Mokihana from the U.S. coastwise trade because of work to be done to the vessel in China. That initial suit was dismissed in 2007, but then re-initiated on December 10, 2007 after the work on the M/V Mokihana was complete. The M/V Mokihana, a container ship, had work done in China to prepare the vessel for the addition of a roll-on/roll-off garage added to the stern of the vessel in Alabama.

Pasha Hawaii Set to Order Containerships

Honolulu-based Pasha Hawaii said the company narrowed its selection to two U.S. shipyards for the construction of two new Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) fueled containerships, with the option to order two additional vessels. Contract specifications are expected to be finalized by the end of the month, with the final selection decision anticipated in January 2017. Details for the vessel order outline a shipping capacity of 3,400 TEUs, including 500 45-foot containers and 400 refrigerated containers, and a sailing speed of 23 knots. Delivery of the first vessel is expected mid-2019, with delivery of the second vessel to come in early 2020.

VT Halter Launches Second ConRo for Pasha

VT Halter Marine, Inc., a subsidiary of Vision Technologies Systems, Inc. MV Marjorie C is the second vessel built for Honolulu-based Pasha Hawaii. MV Marjorie C has the ability to carry 1,500 TEUs, above and under deck, as well as vehicles and over-high and over-wide cargoes on 10 workable decks. The 692-foot long vessel, with a vehicle shipping capacity of 2,750 units, is the largest vessel ever built by VT Halter Marine.

Keppel AmFELS to Build Two LNG Fueled Containerships

Keppel AmFELS, a wholly owned subsidiary of Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd (Keppel O&M) in the United States (US), has secured a contract worth more than US$400m from Honolulu-based Pasha Hawaii for the construction of two Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) fueled containerships. The dual fuel LNG vessels will be built to Keppel's proprietary design with delivery of the first vessel expected in 1Q 2020, and the second vessel in 3Q 2020. SFL Sells its Holding in Horizon Lines
