Edoc'sHELM Selected by Penn Maritime

Connecticut-based Penn Maritime Inc. (Penn) has selected Edoc’s HELM Marine Operations Software to replace their existing scheduling and invoicing system. Penn’s current fleet of 19 barges and 13 tugs that operate along the east coast, gulf coast and west coast of the United States will have their voyages scheduled, tracked, and invoiced through HELM. Since Penn’s business is focused on bulk tanker barging it presented a unique situation for which HELM was adapted. HELM will solve many problems users face in Penn’s current system. HELM’s flexibility makes it perfect for Penn’s high volume of business and constantly changing business requirements. By providing a graphical user interface to plot the vessel’s voyages, the system provides another tool for users to efficiently plan schedules.

Kirby to Acquire Barge & Tankship Operator Penn Maritime

Kirby Corporation (Kirby) has signed an agreement to acquire Penn Maritime Inc. (Penn) and Maritime Investments LLC. Penn Maritime is an operator of tank barges and tugboats participating in the coastal transportation of primarily black oil products in the United States. The total value of the transaction is approximately $295 million (before post-closing adjustments and transaction fees) and will consist of cash, Kirby common stock and the retirement of Penn's debt. Penn operates a fleet of 18 heated, double-hulled tank barges, with a capacity of 1.9 million barrels, and 16 tugboats along the East Coast and Gulf Coast of the United States.

Penn Yan Boats Wins Contract

Penn Yan Boats has received its first municipal contract: Providing a new Pelican Bay brand patrol boat for New York's Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department. The boat contract is for a Pelican Bay model V-160 with a 70 hp Johnson outboard. Penn Yan acquired the Pelican Bay Boat company in early January 2000.

Baltic Exchange CEO Stepping Down

Jeremy Penn, chief executive of London's centuries old Baltic Exchange will step down next year, the exchange said on Friday. Penn, who took the helm as CEO in 2003 after previous top positions with international news agency Reuters, will leave next summer. "It has been a privilege to work for the interest of the Baltic, its members and shareholders for the last 12 years and in many ways I shall be sorry to go," Penn said in a statement. During his tenure, Penn rebuffed overtures in 2010 and 2013 from the London Metal Exchange (LME) over a potential tie-up and also faced heat from brokers over the launch in 2011 by the Baltic of the first central freight derivatives platform Baltex, fearing they would lose business. Kirby Complete Penn Maritime Takeover

Kirby Corporation completes the acquisition of Penn Maritime Inc. & Maritime Investments LLC, US operators of tank barges and tugboats. Penn's fleet, comprised of 18 double-hulled tank barges with a capacity of 1.9 million barrels and 16 tugboats, operates along the East Coast and Gulf Coast of the United States. Penn's tank barge fleet has an average age of approximately 13 years with a product mix that consists primarily of refinery feedstocks, asphalt and crude oil. Conrad Adds to Backlog

Conrad Industries, Inc. won contracts totaling $13.5 million to build two 300 x 60 x 24-ft. 35,000 Barrel Double Hulled Oil Tank Barges for Penn Maritime, Inc., and to repair, renovate and perform hull modifications to a riverboat casino to be operated in Mississippi. excess capacity at our Deepwater facility which helps us capitalize on our investment there. currently owns and operates 20 barges and 14 tugboats making Penn one of the largest U.S. transporters of residual oil and heated asphalt products. New York Thruway Contract Awarded

The New York State Thruway Authority has awarded a contract to Penn Yan Marine Manufacturing Corporation for construction of a custom work boat for inspection and maintenance in the Tappan Zee Bridge area of New York. The model selected is Penn Yan's 2001 Spector, which is 20.5 ft. long, with an eight ft. beam. The model features Penn Yan's new Center Console with a unique forward deck, making it especially suited to the requirements of the job, by providing a large lockable equipment locker, as well as a large work platform at the bow, leaving considerable uncluttered cockpit area available. Powered by a Johnson 115 hp OceanPro outboard motor, the vessel will attain speeds of 36-38 mph.

USNS Washington Chambers, the Navy's newest ship in the Lewis and Clark-class of dry cargo/ammunition ships, was christened and launched Sept. 11, during a morning ceremony at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego. The 689-ft Chambers, designated T-AKE 11, slid into the water for the first time as the ship's sponsor broke the traditional bottle of champagne against the bow. Chambers' sponsor is Loretta Penn, wife of former Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Installations and Environment and former Acting Secretary of the Navy, B.J. Penn.  

Skipjack En Route to West Coast

Penn Maritime's newest vessel, Skipjack, is currently en-route from the builder, Thoma-Sea Boatbuilder, on the Gulf coast to the west coast. It is pushing a new 90,000 barrel tank-barge. A sister ship is expected to deliver from the same yard in October this year. These are a part of Penn's five boat order from the yard.

LR, Penn Oak Energy Partner for LNG Retrofit Service

Lloyd’s Register North America, Inc. (LR) has teamed with Penn Oak Energy Corp to help companies raise capital and mitigate the technical risks associated with retrofitting ships fuelled by liquid natural gas (LNG), by providing a one-stop-shop solution to the industry. Ships that are fuelled by LNG can reduce operating costs while meeting stricter environmental regulations. LNG-fuelled ships have reduced emissions (nitrogen oxide, sulphur oxide and particulate matter) as compared with heavy bunker oil and even low-sulphur marine diesel. Historically, the leading expense for ship operators is fuel and personnel. The challenge to building these new ships has been that shipowners are unwilling to invest in LNG-fuelled ships if supplies of LNG bunker are difficult to obtain…

Changes to Kirby Corp. Board

C. Berdon Lawrence retires from Board after 13 years of service, William M. Waterman, former President of Penn Maritime, elected to Board. Kirby Corporation, based in Houston, Texas, is the nation's largest domestic tank barge operator, transporting bulk liquid products throughout the Mississippi River System, the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, coastwise along all three United States coasts and in Alaska and Hawaii. Mr. Lawrence is retiring to devote more time to family and other business interests, having served as Chairman of the Board of Kirby from October 1999 to April 2010 and has served as Chairman Emeritus of the Kirby Board since April 2010. Mr. Lawrence was the founder and former President of Hollywood Marine, Inc. an inland tank barge company acquired by Kirby in October 1999.

Series to Feature Ships Lost at Sea

"Andrea Doria: Dive to Adventure and Danger" is the first in a three-part lecture series, "Lost at Sea," that highlights Penn State research on shipwrecks. The "Andrea Doria" presentation will take place at April 13 in 26 Hosler Building on the Penn State University Park campus. David Bright, Penn State alumnus and president of Nautical Research Group Inc. of New Jersey, will present a multifaceted view of the Andrea Doria from her initial planning and construction to salvage dives in the 260 feet of cold North Atlantic waters. The Andrea Doria was an Italian steamship with 1,705 passengers and crew on board that was struck in fog off the coast of Rhode Island by the Swedish-American liner Stockholm. The ship was traveling from Genoa, Italy, to New York City in 1956.

Bollinger Converts Barge to ATB

Bollinger Gulf Repair L.L.C., (BGR), a Bollinger Shipyards, Inc., facility, has completed the retrofit and modifications of a Penn Maritime Inc. oceans tank barge to an OPA ‘90 compliant articulated unit. The 360-foot, 66,500 barrel black oil Barge POTOMAC arrived at Bollinger's New Orleans east facility and began the transformation from a single sided hull to double hull vessel with a new outer skin to meet the requirements of OPA '90. Her stern was modified and outfitted with the Beacon JAK connection system. The barges heating system received additional heating coils and a new 12 million BTU Vapower unit. A ballast system and a twelve-foot bow plug, along with an updated electrical system, were part of the conversions.

JLG and Penn State Form JLG University

JLG Industries, Inc. has formed a corporate university called JLG University. Additionally, an alliance with Penn State University has been created to help accomplish the University's goals. The new University represents the company's proactive approach to providing the skills needed to maintain leadership in world markets. While many aerial work platform companies provide short-term proprietary courses, JLG University is the industry's first training alliance between a major university and a corporation. The curriculum at the new JLG University will include workshops, seminars, credit and non-credit courses, certificate programs and both undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

First of Five ATBs Nearing Completion at Penn Maritime

With delays in getting parts for the assembly there was a hold up in the delivery of the first of Penn Maritime’s new tugs from Thoma-Sea Boatbuilders. Now the first of five, M/V Skipjack, is nearing completion and will deliver in May. In a near assembly-line production process the second vessel, M/V Coho, will launch sometime in May and deliver in August. The other tugs are already taking shape and will follow on a regular schedule. Following its delivery the Skipjack will travel to New Orleans to meet up with a 90,000-barrel barge that will come down from its builders at Corn Island Shipyard on the Ohio River in Indiana. Cummins QSK60 engines turning 104 by 112-inch skewed props in Nautican Nozzles with shutter rudders power the 4000 hp Penn tugs. The coupling system is a JAK-400.

Manitowoc Gets Hot Oil Tug Barge Contract

The Manitwoc Company, Inc. and its subsidiary, Bay Shipbuilding Co., part of Manitowoc’s Marine Group, has been granted a contract from Penn Maritime, Inc. to build an ocean-class tug and a 140,000-barrel, double-hull hot oil barge. The contract also permits Penn to purchase a second tug/barge combination within 120 days. With the barge to measure 480 x 78 x 36.5 ft. (146.3 x 23.7 x 11.1 m) and equipped with a system of heating coils to maintain cargo temperatures at or above 135 degrees F, the 6,000-hp tug will boast measurements of 123 x 38 ft. An Intercon coupler will link both vessels into a 564-ft. overall length unit that will be ABS, U.S. Coast Guard and OPA-90 compliant. The unit is scheduled for delivery by December 2004.

Retlif Promotes Reitz to Director of Engineering

Independent EMC and environmental testing organization Retlif Testing Laboratories has promoted Richard Reitz to the position of Director of Engineering. Reitz has been with Retlif since 1985, serving in several capacities. As Director of Engineering, he will now oversee testing and staff engineers at all the Retlif testing facilities including Ronkonkoma, N.Y. headquarters and Plainview, N.Y. composite laboratory, as well as the Harleysville, Penn., Charlotte, N.C. and Goffstown, N.H. laboratories. Reitz will be based in Harleysville, Penn.

Baltic Exchange Names Jackson as CEO

Baltic Exchange on Monday named Mark Jackson, a former Chairman and Director, to replace Chief Executive Officer Jeremy Penn. Baltic Exchange shareholders earlier approved an 87 million pound ($112 million) takeover by Singapore Exchange for one of London's oldest institutions, in a deal that will give SGX access to the multi-billion-dollar freight derivatives market. Jackson, Chief Commercial Officer of AM Nomikos Group, is expected to take up his appointment early in 2017. Penn announced his intention to stand down last year, the Exchange said in a statement.

Baltic Exchange Eyes Move into Commodities

Baltex reaches breakeven level since start of 2015; Baltic previously faced broker opposition over platform. London's Baltic Exchange is studying a potential foray into commodities and is open to proposals on tie-ups as other exchanges attempt to boost volumes, its chief executive said. Baltex, the Baltic's digital shipping platform, was launched in 2011 as the first central electronic marketplace for freight forward agreements (FFAs), which allow investors to take positions on freight rates at a point in the future. Since the beginning of this year, the previously loss making platform, has reached break even levels after Baltex became a venue for presenting block futures at the start of December.

Unified Command Responds to NY Oil Spill

A Unified Command comprised of the U.S. Coast Guard, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), and Penn Maritime Inc. continue to respond to a #6 fuel oil spill that occurred Oct. 14, 2006. The amount of oil spilled is unknown but is estimated to be as much as 800 gallons. The spill occurred on the deck of the barge P-120 owned by Penn Maritime Inc. berthed on the south side of the ConocoPhillips offshore platform located approximately one mile from the north shore of Long Island. The spill was stopped and containment boom was immediately deployed around the barge upon discovery. Adverse weather conditions are believed to have contributed to the impact of the oil spill. Penn Maritime Inc. and ConocoPhillips are fully cooperating with the U.S.

Boomtown Barge Headed for Repairs

According to reports, Tugboats began towing Boomtown Casino's gambling barge to a dry dock in Pascagoula. The repairs at Signal International should take about three weeks, company officials said. Penn National Gaming, which owns Boomtown and Casino Magic Bay St. Louis, has committed to rebuild its Coast properties. Company executives are expected to release more information this week when they issue a quarterly earnings report and host a conference call. Source: SunHerald
